Canon C70 MXF File Crashing Vegas Pro 18

jeremyscottproductions wrote on 3/3/2021, 2:55 PM

Hi All:
Fairly powerful machine that rarely crashes running Vegas 18, newest build. Have done all the normal uninstall/reinstall, updates, drivers, restarting, troubleshooting - however whenever I put MXF files from the Canon C70 on the timeline (4k 400mbps), the program immediately crashes. I've downloaded multiple MXF files from different sources as well in case these files are corrupt or something similar. I've bolded & italicized what I think is the problem in the error report - I just have no idea what do actually do. hahahah :) Thank you in advance if you have any answers! I've also submitted a support ticked but that takes 2-4 days.

i9-9900KF @ 3.6Ghz 8 Core
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti

(Note: I get the same results in Vegas 17 Pro)

Below is the error report:

@jeremyscottproductions No expert on this Jeremy. Can you supply a short duration test sample for download? That way at least if it also fails on other users machines we know its not your PC.

If not can you supply mediainfo... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

@jeremyscottproductions I have a C70 and am currently editing a piece with those footage specs. I'm not having an issue, though I've encountered issues in the past.

I'm not sure what changed tbh, after updating (to build 373) everything seems to be rolling smoothly right now.

It crashes my VP 18, too... legacy HEVC decoding is unchecked.

Checked legacy and it loads into the media window but then crashes when placed on timeline. I sent a crash report with a link to this thread.

In general it's better to stick with defaults in VP 18. Legacy AVC means no decoding with your GPU, for example and no 10-bit formats. Not sure it will help in this case, however.

@jeremyscottproductions Are these files all the same? If there are format differences can you describe them? I only downloaded one (A014C264_20101637_CANON.MXF) assuming it was a representative of all.

Update: tried A018C276 and it works. It doesn't use hardware decoding.

@jeremyscottproductions Back, time zones, where would we be without them!

I tested on my laptop, see my signature.

Three of the files caused crashes, three played fine. I took one of the problem files "A014C264_20101637_CANON.MXF" and re-wrapped to .mxf, it still crashed VP18.

I took the three Failed files and converted, using ffmpeg, to .avi lossless 422 10 bit, VP loaded and played aok. Levels then look better, but probably not what you want, also very large files.

Failed, crashed VP.
A014C264_20101637_CANON.MXF
A019C375_201017EA_CANON.MXF
A020C430_201017O7_CANON.MXF

A018C279_201017SR_CANON.MXF
A019C347_20101791_CANON.MXF

I then converted (Converted video, copied audio) the "Failed" clips to Prores 422 HQ, they loaded and played fine in VP. Again, given the source are log, this would only be of use if you have no other options, i.e. some other NLE to load the problem clips.

Hey All - This is exactly where I got the source files:

It seems everyone's error message contains this error message:

Fault Module:        C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 17.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mxfxavc\mc_bc_dec_avc.dll

I wanted to update as well - late last night I downloaded some other C70 files from difference sites/sources that I could find via google search, and some crashed it and some did not. (As evidenced above.) My guess is that some codecs play nice with Vegas and some do not - however the posters weren't extremely detailed when posting the exact specs of their uploaded files.

I have a similar issues on my current camera EOSR - when I use "ALL-I" codecs they don't display well at all (mostly black and just random frames flash up during playback), rather than the IPB codecs which work beautifully.

I also want to say THANK YOU to everyone in this community! I'm blown away by how helpful everyone is being - much appreciated!! :)

It was also asked that I post the properties of the video file within Vegas - this shows most of the file data but not all:

Having the same issue with with my C70 files in either V18 or V16. For me it seems to be only the clips recorded in Long GOP. The Intra Frame clips are ok. I found a comment from a user on another site suggesting that Canon and Sony may have different interpretation of LGOP.

Just heard from Magix support who said to make sure frame rate of clip matches project frame rate. I tested with a clip that previously crashed and it added to timeline without crashing. So on projects with clips that have more than one frame rate I would have to make sure that any LGOP clips dictate the frame rate. Seems confining to me.
