Click and drag to timeline change in V20 403?

3d87c4 wrote on 5/7/2023, 1:17 AM

Ooops, I mean V20 403.

I've been making gopro timelapse videos from images captured twice per minute for 3 to 7 days (depending on the SD card size).

The gopro images are in multiple folders containing a maximum of 999 images.

To keep things simple I generate a separate video from the contents of each gopro folder, then create the final video from those 33 second videos.

To create each folder's video I open the folder in the Vegas explorer, select the first image (any would work, really) then move the cursor and hit control-A to select all the images. I would then hit the left mouse button and drag them all to the timeline, with preferences set to 1 image per frame. After I render that folder's video I delete all the images from the timeline, delete them from the project media, save the file and continue on to the next folder.

Today, using V20 403 for the first time, I would select all the images as described above but when I move the cursor and attempt to drag all the selected images to the timeline they are all deselected and only the random mage the cursor is over is moved.

I stumbled on the add folder to timeline option, so was able to use that to get the images to the timeline, but when it came time to move all the folder videos to the timeline I had a similar problem. I could select them, but it was difficult (but not impossible) to drag them all to the timeline at once.

I'm using an HP Omen laptop
Windows 10.
32GB ram,
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz   2.21 GHz,
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB memory.

FWIW: I fired up vegas to check a few things while I was composing this post and it crashed...

I have just found that I cannot left click and drag clips to the timeline in V 20-403, but can with right click which brings up sub menu.

Yes, same here. But I found that if highlighting the selection but keep the Shift button pressed, the selection is able to be dragged onto the timeline - but only if the drag is enacted from the last selected event. If the drag is from an earlier event using this method then only that earlier event and those before will drag to the timeline. I suspect that dragging via right clicking is easier.

I get the same, with the left button only one pic gets dragged on despite all being selected, but I can right click & drag all selected pics onto the timeline from the Vegas Explorer. To be honest tho I normally drag from a folder on my other monitor so I don't know if this has changed in Vegas.

PS, if you right click on the selected in Explorer - Add to Project Media list, then all can be dragged in from Project Media with the left button. I know that's a faff but just thought I'd mention it n why not left click in Explorer, it's not as if left click does something else in Explorer.. or does it?

Thank you...I think I used shift left button drag to assemble the folder videos into the final version yesterday.

I guess my question is: has something changed with the new version?

I'm as prone to dumb errors as the next guy, eh?

I am curious why you don't use the Still Image Sequence option? all your stills are imported as if they are a video file.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 5/7/2023, 12:33 PM

Just compared with vp19 b648 and it's definitely changed. With vp19 I can select the clips by ctrl-clicking on them (or choosing a range with shift-click) and dragging them while holding down the left-button on the mouse. Which drops them onto the timeline end-to-end without a dialog. Looks like vp20 b403 now requires holding down both Shift and Ctrl to do the same thing. Also, selecting everything in a folder with ctrl-A works if focus is there and you hold down ctrl-A during the left-button drag.

I can also confirm the same problem (new bug) using Windows 11 and Vegas Pro 20 (#403) - it's impossible to multi-select files from the Explorer tab and drag to the timeline using the Left Mouse button - Right button options still working OK.
No problem multi-selecting files using Windows 11 and Vegas Pro 19 (#651), with the new emergency build that was just released.

Yep same here with V19, select all or as many as you want & drag drop with the eft button,

@DMT3: Not familiar with this...will look for it in the documentation, thanks.

Looked it up & will have to see how best to use that in my workflow.

@3d87c4 Hi, this is what I'd use, I'm presuming that's what @DMT3 mentioned & what you've found in the documentation 👍

3d87c4 wrote on 5/7/2023, 5:21 PM

Yes...I found it in the V17 manual.

This would allow me to load each GoPro folder to the timeline and render the whole video in one fell swoop but would require keeping the source images if I want to change things. (In my current workflow I delete the source images but keep the individual folder videos as a fall back.) I suspect this is a meaningless quibble, though...it saves a lot of time and I could create the individual folder videos if I really want them anyway with script.

Shows the value of a printed manual over a pdf. If I had a hard copy I would likely have stumbled on this myself. (I wonder if it's mentioned in the old V11 book?).

@3d87c4, you don't need to change your workflow. Import the image sequence and then render that to a video file as you always have. Then continue working with the videos as you always have. The only change in your workflow is how you get the original images onto the timeline.

@jetdv Yes, thank you, I realize that, but the temptation to do it all at once and be done is strong.

I have a nice script for rendering regions I may use to create the folder videos just so's I have them. I'll have the next batch of files later this week & will ponder on this 'til then.

I've tagged @DMT3's post as the solution, though the apparent change in click and drag functionality remains a curiosity.

It's definitely been reported. It really bothers me too!

I could select them, but it was difficult (but not impossible) to drag them all to the timeline at once.

The (temporary) solution for this new issue/bug to drag multiple events to the timeline is to drag not directly from within the thumbnails of the events but to drag from the border of the thumbnails.

Is there a way of switching off the box request 'Add to timeline' or Add to Track' when you do eventually drag and drop? It's a tad annoying to say the least.

As they say'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'!
