DEFAULT AUDIO FX

In numerous articles, I have read to change the default audio fx in vegas is to simply right click the audio and change the default settings. However, I have tried many times to change it, and every time I insert audio, Vegas automatically applies a gate, compression, and EQ. Could you please explain why Vegas does not permit me to change this? Am I missing something? Thank you.

Right-click the audio track header and choose More - Edit Visible Button Set and make sure Track FX is turned on.

On the track header, click on the FX button and delete those three effects

Right-click the audio track header and choose "Set Default Track Properties". Make sure the "Track Effects" box is checked and click on OK.

Then any new audio tracks added will not have those effects. However, you really don't need to remove them as, by default, they are set to "do nothing."

Would be nice if the default "nothing" setting was the same as removing them. But I've found that not to be the case at times when I check levels of rendered mixes with Soundforge stats. Btw, I also have trouble getting rid of the default audio fx every time I install a new Vegas version. Takes numerous tries before I get it. I should probably keep a hot-link to @jetdv's post.

Vegas automatically applies a gate, compression, and EQ

Those have been the default audio Fx going back as far as I can recall and I have been a Vegas user since the 1999 audio only version. That said, the default audio Fx can be also be removed or changed in (hidden) 'Internal' menu.
The first thing I do after installing is remove the default audio plug-ins so there are none in a new Fx chain (aka, rack for SloTools users).
