Disappearing audio?

I've had this issue for while, but it seems to be getting worse. Occasionally, I'll drop a clip on the timeline, and it will play fine. Later, when I play back the project I'm working on, the clip won't play. All other clips on that track and on the timeline play just fine.

Even stranger, if I zoom the timeline out, I can see the clip's waveform. If I zoom in closer, the waveform disappears, making it look as though it's a totally silent clip.

Dragging the same clip from the explorer by onto the timeline produces another silent clip. If I create a copy of the file and drag that onto the timeline, it will work fine, though it may eventually fail.

This seems to happen most often with short clips with a solid peak--like doors opening or phones being picked up. Thus far, I've never had the issue with a longer clip or with audio attached to video.

Does anyone know why this might be happening, or something I might be able to do to fix it? I'm using Vegas Pro 12 on Windows 10. Any insight would be amazing.

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the issue. The files I'm having issues with are MP3s. They're mostly from existing sound effect collections. I've also noticed that saving, closing the program, and reopening it can fix the issue, but it's normally only temporary.

Sorry, that wasn't very good advice. I should have read more carefully.

I see lots of reports of people having similar issues with MP3s but I've never had an MP3 cause a problem in any version of Vegas ever. Seems like it may be related to sound cards/drivers.

You could render them to WAV while they are behaving themselves in Vegas, or in an external app. Some methods here and you can also do it with VLC.

This thread would be worth a read, although it applies to VP14: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-14-mp3-audio-issues--103789/
