Drag 'n Drop From Windows Explorer Not Working in 14

Robert Johnston wrote on 10/24/2016, 7:35 PM

I can drag 'n drop video files from Windows 10 Explorer to the Vegas Pro 12 timeline, but I can't do the same with Vegas 14. Is it broken, or is it redesigned that way on purpose?

Okay. I found the problem. If I use "run as administrator," then drag 'n drop is disabled.

Help! I can't open a .veg project from V12 into V14.  Stalls when I try to drag and drop from a folder, same if trying to open a project from Vegas Explorer.  I had so many freezes trying to load my multi cam shoot clips that I had to go back to V12 just to get the editing done.
So far I just can't use V14 if I can't get files on the timeline...
I have a robust CPU and Windows 7-64...everything went fine with V12 to finish my project.
Did I waste $250 on my upgrade?
Thanks....

What video format do you use for this project?

If it is long-recording HDV, this is a known issue of trouble.

YES !
I'm mixing 2 Sony V1 (HDV) cams with a Canon XA20 (media stick).  I think you answered my question...it is constantly freezing up any time I try to load an HDV file...and mine are almost an hour long (live show) although experimenting with short files I still have the same problem.  The Canon files load real quick.
I'm struggling to get any of the HDV footage on to the timeline via Windows Explorer or Vegas Explorer.  Trying to load a V12 .veg file is impossible...
Extremely slow response if any to 'drag and drop'  - I mean minutes to load if I'm lucky at all, while V12 loads instantly.
Any RAM or other settings I could adjust to change the behavior ?
I plan to continue using my perfectly capable cams for as long as I can - so hope this particular issue can get resolved.  I just installed v178 and still have the same problems....

Try ReRender your HDV source, from M2T to M2T again, and now the file can be loaded to VP14:

(Sounds weird - but it worked)

Arrrr....just tried to open V14 and it wants to load my last project automatically (I forgot to check that off...) and it looks like it will take at least 10 min to load if at all.  This is absurd...
How would I rerender my original HDV clips?  Haven't done that before.... this should not be necessary and depends on having an earlier version of Vegas to get anything done.  I pity the person buying V14 for the first time using Vegas if this basic function isn't working....
Make that 15 min at this rate...still trying to open a project that was already on the timeline with a mix of HDV and AVCHD clips.

I tried setting my properties to match the HDV clips in the hope that might speed things up but I'm not so sure. Guess I'm not alone on this....
Thanks for you help!

After loading VP14, can you cancel the opening project (Click cancel on the left bottom).

I know it is unnecessary..., it is just pointing out the issue - but the developers have know this issue and we hope to be fixed on the next update...

Yes, you are not alone..., so many felt similar.

Ok, good to know I'm not mentally deficient in this one !

Actually, I looked for the 'cancel' button and it was not there...I could find no way to stop the agonizingly slow process except to kill it with 'task manager'.  Also, I never saw the audio being rendered either.... if I wait long enough it might just load is what I'm learning.  But I do mean 10+ minutes for a clip to load while V12 is almost instant.

Thanks so much for your help!

teaktart wrote on 10/30/2016, 3:26 PM

I'm trying to load a project and after 5 min. of trying to load I'm stuck at 20% and "Not Responding" so I can't cancel or do anything else.  Completely locked up....frozen.
Pretty useless if its impossible to even open a previous project, let alone load new clips.... dang~

NickHope wrote on 10/31/2016, 1:28 AM

When I try to drag and drop my "problem" HDV files, the "Cancel" button does not appear. When I try to open a VP12/13 project that includes them, the button does appear but it doesn't work, or it works with a long delay. Look for the button here:

I think there's a good chance this bug will be fixed in the forthcoming VP14 update.

If you still have the HDV tapes, you could recapture your footage using HDVSplit instead of VidCap, which should resolve the problem with your V1 footage. I would be interested to know if the Canon XA20 files cause trouble on their own, without the V1 clips.

teaktart wrote on 10/31/2016, 11:48 AM

I first tried using HDVSplit to capture and ran into some kind of error problem...it saw my camera - would activate the tape moving, but no data was captured.  The message said something to the effect of...I'm missing an mp3 audio codec or something.  It used to work just fine.  I un and re-installed HDVSplit, did the same with my V12 and the V12 was able to capture my footage while the Split still gave me the vague error I couldn't seem to fix.

I have tried dragging my XA20 footage and its fast and quick to the timeline on V14 - just like it should be.  Its those HDV clips that create the havoc and freeze up my CPU.  Yesterday, the 'cancel' button was not appearing on the bottom left side where it should be....and the % line next to it is missing as well when I try to add an HDV clip and it stalls/freezes up completely.  Monitoring my CPU its not very demanding on resources...so I doubt my computer is the problem.

I did uninstall the first version of V14 and the other day installed build 178....zero improvement with my problems....just can't use V14 at all if I can't load any clips or projects...

It was MPEG1 audio decoder.

If it's important, maybe you could try with ffdshow until Magix get this bug fixed. I don't have it installed now so I can't be specific, but it was always pretty simple for me to set up when I did use it. You can just uncheck everything except the one decoder you need. I have vague recollections of having to do that myself some 10 years ago to get HDVSplit working.

teaktart wrote on 10/31/2016, 9:42 PM

Yes, that is what HDVSplit said to do...download ffdshow but there were zillions of codecs and I had no idea what to chose..the messege just said mp3 audio ....so I think I allowed all and still no resolution next time I tried to capture - couldn't do it.  Weird thing is it used to work just fine....

I had hoped that reinstalling the HDVSplit would include whatever mp3 audio codec was missing- but apparently not.  I'll try to set up the situation again and see if I can get the exact error mssg again.

I had a devil of a time trying to capture my tape footage going back and forth between VidCap and HDV Split as neither wanted to work for a while...so it was back to V12

Thanks!

Thank you so much for the link to the newest build....I had high hopes....
Here is what happened:
I just did a clean install of build 189 and zero improvement.
Tried to open a V12 .veg project and computer totally froze up...along with no 'cancel' button or 'opening project' % along the bottom left corner.   Only way to kill it is via Task Mgr.
Next, I tried to open a previous project via "File" menu....totally froze up and could not 'cancel' .
Tried dragging HDV files and it got to 13% and froze up hard once again.
I'm so disappointed I can not use this V14 at all ......

Wolfgang S. wrote on 11/1/2016, 12:53 PM

I tried to answer that in the thread of the new build. I have also done some tests with huge HDV files and it takes a very long time (30-40 minutes) to open my old HDV project.

Even if the fix for that is not included in the newest build, the good news are that the development team is aware of this issue. Gary confirmed that in the thread of the new build https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-14-update-2-build-189--104313/#ca644639

and I can tell you that I have sent my huge HDV project (90GB) on an SSD yesterday to the relevant team member to allow them to test that by themselfes.

So I assume there will be a solution. But it will need some more time.

That sounds like an excellent way to go... lets hope the crashing can be replicated by them and fixed....
I plan to keep my tape cams as they work real well and I have a stash of tapes!

PeterWright wrote on 11/1/2016, 10:49 PM

I do hope you have some success with this soon.   I'm reading this thread from China, but soon after I return I have a multi-cam shoot including my Z1 HDR camera.   If nothing changes I shall edit it in Vegas13.
