Error Code 59 after rebuilding PC

pepperedwithgunfire wrote on 4/22/2025, 9:27 AM

Howdy. I have a copy of Vegas Pro 18 I got off humble bundle thats worked just fine. I recently upgraded and rebuilt my PC, part of which involved swapping to a new boot drive with a fresh install of windows 11. This left my untouched installation of vegas on what is now just a storage drive. When trying to boot it I'm hit with error code 59 and told that it does not have a license, I presume because of this install. I have access to my product key and everything, I just don't know if there's a way to get the license for that copy of Vegas back without a full reinstall, and I'm hoping someone here might know the fix. Thanks.

Just reinstall VEGAS and everything should work as it did before.

@pepperedwithgunfire Another user recently here in the forum was having a similar Error code issue. The solution as RogerS pointed out was to do a reinstall.... But to play it safe, completely uninstall Vegas from the system first.

The reason why Vegas will not start on what is now a storage drive (assuming you initially installed it on your previous C: drive) is that all the necessary files and registry entries are not located where they were on your initial installation.

@pepperedwithgunfire  ... I agree with @Reyfox - Vegas Pro on your new storage drive (the former C drive) no longer has any links to Vegas Pro registry entries on your new C drive (because there are none) so no registration/activation registry information can be found via the C drive registry when trying to open Vegas Pro.

In the past, when I've replaced an old C drive HDD or SSD and replaced it with a new HDD/SSD, I've reformatted the old C drive before installing it as a storage drive.

What you could do now is to reboot your computer and, in BIOS, change the boot drive back to your old C drive (i.e. the storage drive - assuming that Windows is still available on that drive). Then uninstall Vegas Pro. Then reboot the computer again and change the BIOS back to your new C drive. Back in Windows, re-install Vegas Pro ideally with the program being installed on your new C drive rather than another (e.g. a storage) drive. While installing Vegas Pro on a drive other than the C drive is possible, some have occasionally reported on the forum over the years that problems have been encountered with such an install.

Another option is to save important documents/media files and the like on to another drive such as an external drive, reformat the storage drive, and then transfer the docs/media files/etc back on to the storage drive. Of course, any programs including Vegas Pro need to be installed on the C drive.

@pepperedwithgunfire Uninstalling Vegas before a motherboard or OS upgrade is necessary before reinstalling Vegas. Otherwise, Magix sees a 2nd unique machine and consumes 2 licenses. Since you already did it, suggest you log into your Magix account and kill off the license for the oldest install.
