EXTREMELY SLOW RENDERS

Nathan-Ward wrote on 4/20/2023, 12:30 PM

Yesterday I was editing a video for YouTube as I normally do, but all of the sudden, my pre-render and render times are ABNORMALLY SLOW. Then sometimes it will act like it wants to work normal for a split second, then just tanks again. I have never had a problem up until this point, and I'm getting very frustrated as no one seems to have an answer. (I use Vegas Pro 20 btw)

Maybe because you do not give more information except that you work with Vegas Pro 20?

Here's what the render speeds look like. I'm not totally sure what other info you want me to provide, but just let me know and I got you. All I know is that anytime I go to render a video, no matter if it's the project I was working on, or a new clip, it renders insanely slow. This has never happened before. I have 16gb of RAM, 1660 ti, intel i5 processor. Rendering it at 1080p60 as I usually have it. It also seems that under the 'memory-usage' part, it's a new amount every time I try to render. This is currently affecting my job, so it has me in panic mode.

Try your OBS recordings at constant, not variable frame rate, and see if that helps.

Tried it, and took a 2 minute clip in Vegas to render and it's still going abnormally slow. The current speed also makes no sense compared to the average, it's like it's spiking up and down insanely fast.

@Nathan-Ward
Thanks for all the info
Indeed is it better to capture with OBS with constante framerate'.
It looks that you don't have an Intell GPU at your I5, which I5 precisely ?
Also I missed your setting forOptions/Preferences/Video
But first start to reset the program to its default settings by using this tutorial exactly: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Can you also give a screenshot of your used (customized?) rendertemplate

Project is set to 60 fps

Render is set to 59.94 fps

They should match and the output from OBS should also match.

@Nathan-Ward
Mainconcept is an old codec, better should be the same template with NVENC ( your Nvidia card)

Further I see that your I5 has also good graphic processor 630 that is maybe not yet allowed to show up.
That you have to change in the BIOS (UEFI).
That one then can be used in Options/Preferences/File I/O

The image you posted indicates you are still using Variable Frame Rate Source.

I suggested that you capture Constant Frame Rate. This is done first before recording using your OBS settings, not something you would do after the fact.

And, as mentioned, do not mix 60.000 and 59.940 fps in Vegas. They are not the same thing.

Oh that's strange, I guess what I tried in OBS didn't change it to CFR. How do I change it to CFR then? Also for this render process I set the frame rate to 60 beforehand

@Nathan-Ward Hi, it says that because uploading to the forum changes the file, you can share a small sample using Google Drive or another file sharing site,

On Google's page top right is a little square, in there is Google Drive, drag the file on the screen, when it is uploaded right click on it - Share, a box will pop up, choose Share with any with this link - Copy link then use the chain symbol at the top of a new comment to post the link on here,

Changed it to CBR, recorded a new clip at 60fps, the project is also at 60fps, as well as the render fps setting. However it still shows it's VFR in Vegas when I render it. Also, normally when I render videos my CPU is putting work, like I can audibly hear it. But since this problem started it hasn't been doing that. Every once in awhile it will have a quick burst like it's working normally then stop again.

Also, are CBR and CFR the same thing? One seems to be for bitrate and the other is for frame rate

@Nathan-Ward Hi, you're render to D drive, what type of storage device is D drive? & 31.0.15.3168 (NVIDIA) is the Game Ready Driver, it's often recommended on here to use the Studio driver, whether that would make much difference I don't know,

My D drive is my hard drive, and I haven't tested the studio drivers yet. That's the weird thing is I have made so many videos using the same settings, drivers, etc. and never had problems. This just randomly started at the end of an editing session yesterday. I believe it was right after my Vegas crashed, which happens sometimes for me. Then I got back into the project, tried Pre-rendering part of the video to watch it back, and it was slowly pre-rendering it frame by frame.

Nathan-Ward wrote on 4/20/2023, 5:24 PM

Update: It seemed to be an issue with the specific project I was working on. I scrapped it, and then tried rendering a little of the same recording and the speeds were fine. I appreciate all of you who offered help today! Thank you and have a nice day :)

Former user wrote on 4/20/2023, 5:50 PM

@Nathan-Ward Yeah a damaged file can affect performance, if you still got that project try rendering it out in sections, see if you can narrow it down to a single object,

 (C) Drive is often the main drive with Windows & programs on, any other drive is an extra one, & there's lots of different types of drives that can connect in different ways, the speed of render etc. can sometimes depend on the drive & the type of connection. But if you think you've worked it out 👍

Maybe there's an effect hiding somewhere in that project that is slowing things down.

No, that gentleman gets confused. He's showing a streaming setting instead of recording, and CBR has nothing to do with CFR. You want to record in CQP. Here is an example

You will notice i'm recording in fragmented mp4, if you have auto remux to mp4 turned on it will convert the file to a format Vegas can use. I would assume you're recording in MKV, or FLV, and auto remuxing to MP4, this creates the VFR, but MP4 remuxed to MP4 keeps your frame rate CFR. The reason you have to remux the MP4 is because Vegas can't read fragmented MP4's like other NLE's can.

I am using the beta which is why I have the fragmented MP4 option. I have seen runaway memory leaks so I don't think this beta is of public release quality, but when it is released use that option. In the meantime the way I"M assuming you're doing things Is the right way to do it, with the unfortunate negative of the remux creating the VFR. But it's that or potentially lose your entire work if OBS or Windows crashes.
