First Render in VP14 crashes

Wovian wrote on 12/1/2016, 5:24 AM

Morning All

I tried my first render with VP14 last night and it crashed, needing task manager to exit Vegas.  I was rendering a 45 minute video with a mixture of HD camcorder footage and stills.  (Haven't had a crash during rendering for several years with the same components and transitions).  I was using the Sony brightness and contrast adjustment but otherwise pretty simple, basic stuff.

I tried again with the same result.  The render process stopped four times at exactly the same spot - the use of the Portals transition called jigsaw. (Not at my PC right now but think its called jigsaw)

I changed the transition with another of the Portals options and whilst it slowed significantly when the render got to that point we did get past it but then the render crashed towards the end whilst rendering a standard HD camcorder clip.

I then noted that I had, by default, set the render to use the GPU.

I tried again with the GPU rendering off and we did get to the end but it slowed significantly on quite a few of the transitions.  I therefore have two questions:

  1. Has anybody else had problems rendering with the portals transition in VP14 (There has never been a problem with VP13 and earlier versions)?
  2. Why would turning accelerated GPU rendering on crash the rendering process?  I am using an i7 processor and AMD RX470 4GB Graphics card which I thought worked well with Vegas?
  3. Are there any other settings in preferences I should check as I have the default VP14 set up.

Thanks

Do you mean 1) "GPU acceleration of video processing" in the video preferences, or 2) "Encode mode" in the rendering settings? If it's #2 then that's not supported for your card. If it's #1 then it's just not as stable as rendering without that enabled, even though your card should be pretty good for Vegas. You could try updating the driver from the vendor or AMD, especially if you've just got a driver that Windows provided.

More in GPUs here.

Is it possible to prerender those transition part?

Save as new project for render purpose.

Now, render that part to new track, to other intermediate format - then remove that original jigsaw transition.

Now try render again.

Nick, I read your insightful article on GPU rendering.  It's 1 above I was referring to but don't know until tonight what encode mode was set in rendering settings as I never touch/look at them.  To be honest I have never used GPU acceleration so didn't set this intentionally but wanted to ask as I had read your article and I had the card you referred to as being good.  Maybe its not that good!!!  The driver is from AMD.

Set I have transitions all through the project, lots of them as part of slideshows.  I have never had problems before so unfortuantely I think its a VP14 issue.  If I continue to use VP14, (looking increasingly unlikely!), I'll just try to remember to not use that transition.

Hmm... I just tried it myself using Transitions: Portal>Jigsaw Puzzle* and compare the performance between VP13.453 & V14.201 - doing transition between different Solid Color media generated. This was my old favorite transition 🙂 but I rarely used it anymore.

I can confirm on preview playback only, the VP14 felt 'heavier'.

*White Wash & Plaid also does similar.

Same for me set on playback then on render...... good night Vienna!

From the VP14 build 244 release notes:

"The Portals transition now works properly"

I did some brief testing and the Portals transitions are now snappier for me in VP14 build 244 than they are in VP13 build 453.

I just did a short 30 second piece using 4 of the Portals using the same AMD card as your but mine is 8 gig, 32 gig mem. and rendering to a 512 SSD - 4k to 1080P and it rendered in in 1:1 time. V14
