Frequent long freezing, all of a sudden

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/17/2022, 10:05 AM

Hi all,

Vegas Pro 19 Build 643

Windows 10 Pro Version 21H2

Canon 200D MP4 files 1080 res

AMD 6800XT

AMD Driver 30.0.15021.11005 updated 28/04/22

AMD Ryzen 9 5900 XT 3.7Ghz

32GB RAM

I have been using this version of Vegas without any issues aside from the odd crash (which I've come to expect from the application over the years) but in the past couple of weeks, I've been experiencing some really long (minutes!) freezes during moving things around in the timeline editing process. Sometimes it then works fine after freezing, other times it throws me out of the software entirely with no error messages and I have to re-create the work I have done.

I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks

Keith

Something was recently installed or updated on your system why this is happening.... Back track and figure out what it was,

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/17/2022, 1:00 PM

I've not installed anything myself, so I assume you mean a Windows update or something? Is there a way I can check what has been installed and when?

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/31/2022, 6:29 AM

Hi, I've uninstalled everything that has been installed since the problem occurred and have also uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics drivers. The problem still persists. Please help

Just as an outside chance, try resetting Vegas Pro back to its factory settings as per https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/ and see if that helps. Unfortunately, lots of user settings will be lost when going back to factory settings.

Or roll back to build 550 of Vegas Pro 19 as many found difficulties with build 643.

I would test VEGAS Pro 20 build 214...

@Keith-Brown

I'm not awake yet so I'm not going to spit out the answer. Seeing your post caused me to look at some hangs that I experienced recently. I'll show how to get more information about the error(s), though.

I'm going to get another cup of coffee and look at some of the Security Updates that happened a few minutes before I experienced my flurry of hangs.

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/31/2022, 8:56 AM

@john_dennis Thank you very much for that. I've followed the same process, but interestingly my "Event Viewer" and "Reliability Monitor" don't show any references to Vegas causing any errors at all. Still, it's good to know these tools exist for future monitoring!

@jetdv thanks, but I don't really want to pay for another piece of software just because the current one does not function as it should

@Dexcon  Thank you, I will try both options tomorrow and hope for the best

@Keith-Brown, you can be certain that 19 will not be updated as 20 is the current version. So if you want the newest stability fixes, you will need to upgrade (or go 365 which keeps you current). I had a similar issue where the preview screen would lock up but the timeline kept playing. I could still save in that condition but as soon as I stopped playback, VEGAS would lock up and have to be killed. This was in 18, 19 and the first build of 20. Since build 214, I have yet to see a lockup on the editing I do. Not to say it will fix your issue (which is why I said to test it - not buy it first) but it certainly fixed mine.

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/31/2022, 9:05 AM

@jetdv Yeah I get that, but I've been using the software for many years and every version I've purchased has had it's instabilities - so I just don't have any confidence that upgrading resolves the issues, as it never has never worked before. For example, I upgraded to 19 from 16 for the same reasons and here I am, struggling to use it, once again.

jetdv wrote on 10/31/2022, 10:34 AM

@Keith-Brown, which is why I said TEST it, not BUY it. But I can say VEGAS Pro is getting more and more stable with each new build. With build 214, I've actually forgotten to save until the project was finished once. That's how stable it now is with the footage I use. Can't guarantee it's that way with all footage which is why you need to TEST it.

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/31/2022, 10:53 AM

@jetdv I'm glad it's working for you but I don't have high hopes because I've heard it all before

@Keith-Brown, and you'll never know unless you TEST it. Here's the type of footage I'm using:

As you have not yet listed the mediainfo on the files you're using, it's hard to compare. But if yours is similar to mine, I'd definitely give it a try.

Besides, what's it going to hurt to download and install the current version as a test? There's no cost to do that. And it might actually help!

Notably:

Fixes and Improvements

  • Fixed problem with hardware decoding of GoPro and DJI files

While yours are from a Canon, they're still HD MP4 files so maybe this fix helped you too.

@jetdv Testing it is irrelevant!! Version 19 Build 643 was working great for me up until 2 weeks ago and now, 3 or 4 crashes per day

RogerS wrote on 10/31/2022, 11:34 AM

So what changed? Media you are using? Drivers or Windows?

I found 19.550 more reliable with XAVC S files than 643.

Keith-Brown wrote on 10/31/2022, 11:37 AM

@RogerS Nothing has changed, nothing that I know of anyway. I'm still using the same footage format. I can only assume it's something that Windows might have done in the background? I will try 550 at some point.
