Is there away to transition gradually into slow-motion?
Slower and slower - e.g. going from 60 fps down to 25 fps over, say, 5.seconds.

You could try Vegas Slow Motion FX with keyframes.

Both are not easy to handle.
Velocity envelope isn't so hard- a calculator can help if you are trying to hit exact framerates (it's percentage based).
Both options are percentage based and are difficult to handle because they both don't change automatically the event length according the new speed. Slow Motion FX has an option to do so.
Changing the Switch to Trim Events will auto adjust the length of the event as the Velocity envelope is adjusted.

@Former user I often use a velocity envelope on surfers to make their wipeouts last. But I always struggled with the length changes. So thanks for the tip.
