You get four cuts of the same basic track:

.. some people say that you get a very nice music track to use from the added example too ??

That’s good if you have some good audio to work with and visuals you can do something, I’ll give it a go between projects, anybody got some award winning concepts you would like to share before I have a crack? LOL.
Jedman wrote on 8/1/2013, 3:29 AM
Just Google Goulian Vegas, there are a few up already.
Heres one-

At about 8.5 sec I just imagine that guy saying,
"Doh! You gave them that pic??? " lol.
Most have very different takes on how to do it though.
A couple have used the footage and audio from the supposed demo clip, so most people seem to agree everything in the folders is up for use.
So, question.....
if you do use some footage from demo clip, which is 2.39-1 aspect ratio, do you make the whole thing 2.39-1,
or,
have a mix of 2.39-1 and 16x9,
or,
crop in to make it all 16 x9?
Thoughts?

Wow. This is pretty impressive.

Keying looks great for Vegas.
But then, could you take it to After Effects for keying, and then bring it back.
According to the guidelines, you could.
Nevertheless, excellent work.

Yea the vimeo clip is good, I like it. But they not using the terrible audio provided in the download. I need to read the instructions again.

I hadta laugh out loud a moment ago while reading this thread when my brain auto-switched to conspiracy theory mode. Of course it's completely baseless and I'm not at all suggesting there's a lick of truth but the thought that crossed my mind was that the way this thread is confusing and convolution things it almost seems like a ploy to subtly convince others to second guess entering =)

If you didn't see the one I did on the "Pros" you can check it here: https://vimeo.com/66371696

Sony/Vegas/Goulian

ritsmer: 1) I checked with the version of the guidelines when they had hit up six people to do it. As the one I have and the newer one are exactly the same I am confidant that the line "Everyone involved in this project was selected ..." is just a legacy statement from the first batch. Even if it wasn't I don't see the contradiction, the contest would still be open to anyone of legal age but might not get selected. There's nothing to suggest one couldn't enter. Again, this has nothing to do with entering.

2) It doesn't implicate anything. Use only the content provided, that's pretty black and white. As I stated previously I pulled music from one of the video clips provided. There is nothing in the guidelines that states you must use the " "Vegas Pros Goulian Soundtrack." And yes you may "cannibalize," to your hearts content. The guidelines clearly state "Audio can be edited/processed in any way you see fit."

"what clearly is somebody's example as to how it could be done." If you are referring to the file "Mike MMU Tour2.mxf" I have no idea where you're getting your info from but the fact that you throw out info like that with nothing to substantiate it is probably the same faulty logic that's leading to your questions that are already answered. "hardly gives us the right to cannibalize from this example." Um, yes it does give that right, that's what its there for, it's included, and you're labeling it as a sample or example when those words are not used anywhere in the rules, on Sony's page, or the Guidelines.

Not trying to bash ya ritsmer, it just seems to me that you are totally over thinking it and reading between the lines. I'm pretty sure if you spent half the time making a vid for this instead of going on and on about it yours would be the best out of anyone.

Jedman, I do agree that 8 could have been better stated, it didn't affect me as I only used Vegas so didn't give that one a lot of thought. Commonsense to me would be to just make sure Vegas does most of the heavy lifting.

Jim, seems to me that would be an easy fix, just slap that info on what you did and resubmit. Might cut a note to them too just so they know.

Rory, there's no limitation on how many audio trax.

#1 (participants) is just for showing that the material really is not 100% consistent allowing for second thoughts.

#2 (example soundtrack) several participants in this thread - including the OP and me - (plus in other threads found on the net) - wonder if it is legal to use the part of the downloaded material which clearly is an example.

If anything seems not consistent to several participants it is fair to ask the owner of the contest about any such doubt .... as it IMHO is fair to expect an answer ... before you start using several days doing your best creating your contribution.

Edit: When we honestly and seriously ask - and explain why we ask - to get these doubts cleared, there is - IMHO - no reason to switch into kinda condescending LOL- or "conspiracy" mode about that.
MUTTLEY wrote on 8/2/2013, 4:29 PM

I think I put in enough disclaimers in my "conspiracy theory" comment to demonstrate that it was not in the least meant to be taken seriously on any level. If you truly did find it to be condescending despite that I suppose it could serve to illustrate the point I was making in the rest of the post. You are reading between the lines and jumping to false conclusions and then purport your misinterpretations as fact.

1) I just explained in my first post that it was consistent.
2) I just explained to you that the video IS NOT an example or a sample, it is part of the assets provided. I truly cannot fathom what in the world would posses you to say, yet again, after I and a good number of others have addressed this, "downloaded material which clearly is an example." The confidence with which you continue to label that clip as a sample or example despite there being no evidence that that's the case and despite multiple people answering your relentless and unabated reissuance of the claim, it really is fascinating.

QFT:

ritsmer:

“clearly looks like somebody's well done and finished contribution to the same contest”
“getting your … contribution, disqualified after one second of the judges watching it - because you used some of the soundtrack from the example.”
“another contestant wins because he used the much more accessible soundtrack from what seems to be an example?”
“still leaving unceartainty as to if the added example is just an example provided outside of the contest or actually part of the contest”
“here is a substantial difference between -what is clearly material provided for the contest and -what clearly is somebody's example”
“what he downloaded could impossibly contain his finished example) hardly gives us the right to cannibalize from this example.”
“you get a very nice music track to use from the added example too?”

I suppose it is at least remotely possible that you are fluent in another language than I where the words "clearly" and "example" have vastly different definitions than those I am accustomed to. That would also go a long way in explaining your inexplicable refusal to accept any of the answers that people graciously took time out of their day attempting to help you.

If you come around near here some day I will be happy to buy you a pint or two, so that we can talk about this among more interesting things.

I am sorry that my bad English, as you point out, may have caused some possible doubts from me (and others).

I have tried to explain what and why I have not understood 100%.

It may probably be attributed to just another difference in language and culture that I did (and still do) expect the owner of the contest to see that:
- here we have a guy who is eager to spend some days editing for our contest
- because of his bad English he is in doubt about one point. He has tried to explain it in several posts, as Muttley kindly points out.
- then we will -of course- use some 30 seconds to answer his simple question so that he (and others) can get on enjoying editing for our contest...

I've seen the prize list and was wondering, is there only a first prize? I don't see runner up prizes, winner take all.

From the Contest Official rules:

1. Under one (1) minute in length
2. Use only the footage and audio supplied. Special effects and other modifications can be made to the content supplied, but no original audio or video can be used.
3. Hosted elsewhere on the Internet, and a URL with the link to the film provided to SCS via the Contest Submission form on the entry page.
4. All Contest Submissions must include complete, current contact information.
5. All entrants must produce their final video in Vegas Pro, and be able to provide a .veg file as proof of production in Vegas Pro.
6. All Contest Submissions must include the Goulian Aerospace logo.

From the downloaded materials guidelines:

1. Use only the content provided.
2. Titles must be created in Vegas Pro.
3. Audio can be edited/processed in any way you see fit.
4. Each video must include the animated Goulian logo.
5. Each video must include a “made with Vegas Pro 12” mention.
6. Each video must include filmmaker’s name/studio.
7. Each video must be under 60 seconds long in total (including titles, etc.).
8. You may augment your Vegas production with other applications, such as After Effects, as long as everything ends up in Vegas.
9. Please complete and return the release form.

SUMMARY:
Do what you do. Everyone involved in this project was selected because you have a unique visual style (and you know Vegas). Use this opportunity to definitively put your creative mark on the media, and push Vegas Pro to its limits.

My comments:
Take care of the points 6/4 about the Goulian *animated* logo
I have seen in some contributions that also the rule about -Each video must include a “made with Vegas Pro 12” mention - may be missed.

6. All Contest Submissions must include the Goulian Aerospace logo.

There is no "Goulian Aerospace" logo. So since there's a mistake in the official rules, perhaps the judges will allow a little wiggle room for your various creative approaches. I'd say stop nit-picking it and just do what feels right.

I get the bit about only using the supplied materials, and not incorporating any other video or audio - that is fine.

My question is whether I can use a few of my own PNGs which act as masks. if I want to mask out a bit of the screen I use a mask created as a PNG and add that onto a track. I made them myself - that are simply black lines on a transparent background - they do not contain images. Can I use them, or does this qualify at unauthorised third-party material?

thanks,

I'm assuming that the rules on the contest page are for us and the text file was for the pro's who did this, but the animated logo is at the start of "Mike MMU Tour2.mxf"

Here's my submission:

EDIT: there's some pretty good one on youtube. I went through all the recommended videos that came up with my videos, good stuff there.

Yea it closes today and their are some pretty neat offerings.
stbo wrote on 8/31/2013, 11:36 AM
It would be very useful if there could be some confirmation that the submissions have been accepted. I submitted two, but unless I get confirmations from anything, I am always a bit worried that they have not gone through.

When I clicked "submit" it said that my submission has been accepted right on the page. The submission form dissapeard and that appeared..

OK, just to be sure, I resubmitted my two entries, because I do not recall the screen changing like you described. However, this time the screen did change, so I feel better.

To Sony - my apologies if you receive the entries twice - but I wanted to be sure they were counted.

Thank you

Michael Goulian is one amazing pilot. I had a great time watching other videos of him flying.

The legal rules are different from the doc.
file. The full contest rules do not mention that you have to have the Vegas Pro 12 in the body of your video nor the name and studio you are associated with. This is a problem for those like me who did not read the doc file. I did though follow the LEGAL rules to a tee! I did a word search in the legal rules page and fond Vegas Pro 12 only once and that was in the prize section.
ret wrote on 9/3/2013, 11:52 PM
Why is there a difference. The contest rules ARE THE LEAGL rules . This is a, big problem. Two sets of rules. I did a word search and according to the Legal Rules it does not need the Vegas video 12 graphic or the name of the company on the video. One is rules the other guidelines. Which has more weight?
