Grouping Tool is highlighting EVERY track

davis-freen wrote on 9/11/2017, 9:50 PM

I am using Pro 12

When I use the grouping tool normally it would only highlight the clips/tracks I mouse over. But now it highlight EVERY track.

Here is a picture showing what I'm talking about https://imgur.com/a/muiFu

I have ignore event grouping off. The clips aren't stuck together the group tool is just highlighting everything above and below where I move the mouse.

The dashed white line is the indicator for the "grouping tool" (actually called the Selection Edit tool) bounding box....yours seems to be acting normally from what I see. The dashed white boundary is highlighting everything within it. If that is too much, I suggest you spread out the timeline and make the bouding box smaller -- start near where you want to start selecting the clips, click and hold the right mouse button and draw the bounding box to encompass what you need. If you select too many then you can click on a bit of empty space and try again.

Once you have made the selections you want, remember to click back to the Normal Edit tool (crtl-D).

Ralf is on the right track, but the Selection Edit Tool has three possible states

  1. By default, it is set to "free form" which means you can adjust both the height and width of the selection box
  2. You can only adjust the height of the selection box while the width includes everything horizontally on your timeline. You would use this to select everything on a track or multiple tracks
  3. You can only adjust the width of the selection box while the height includes all tracks in your project

By your screenshot I can see that you appear to be stuck in mode #3. To change the mode:

  • Select the Selection Edit Tool
  • With the left mouse button, drag in your timeline to begin making a selection
  • While still holding the left mouse button down, click with the right mouse button. Each time you click you scroll through the three possible selection behaviors. Click until you have the Free Form state. Now you can define both the width and height of your selection as you expect.

Hanging around here that last little while really has me trying to get up to speed with more certainty. I just watched a video (I'll post it below - I have no affiliation with the creator) which showed that the auto ripple tool also has three aspects to it...and I had it set to 'affected tracks' instead of 'all tracks', etc.

Anyway, I hope others find this as useful as I did:

I never knew this either, or had forgotten it... Guess I need to read the PDF again too.

It seems to me it would be useful to have these 3 modes also selectable in a drop-down menu on the "Selection Edit Tool" icon, like how different modes of the "Normal Edit Tool" are selectable. 3 different icons for it's current state would also be welcome (and similarly still needed for 3 different Auto Ripple modes too).
