HDV 1440x1080 quality on YouTube

Hello,

I'm looking for advices what settings should I use for my videos to provide them the best possible quality in YouTube.

Of course, there are tons of tutorials for rendering in different resolutions but I haven't found the one I use.

The video files, I import to Vegas, are recorded by Fraps and got resolution 1280x960. I want my videos to be displayed as 1080p in YouTube and also keep 4:3 ratio, so for rendering I use following settings:

And here are my project properties:

I just clicked "Yes" for question "Do you want ot set your project video settings to match this media?"

Everything is OK till the moment I can see this video uploaded in YouTube - its quality is pretty bad. I know that YT process each video and quality will never be as good as it is in original file, but I feel I do something wrong, because quality loss is larger than in other people' videos.

For example, if I download from YouTube any 1080p gameplay, I see in properties it has bit rate around 3.5 Mbps. When I download mine - bit rate is around 2.7 Mbps. So the difference is noticeable.

Here's my video - it doesn't look good:

So could someone tell me what should I do, to make a quality of my videos better than that? As I mentioned, it's all about quality in YouTube. Thanks in advance.

PS

I'm not sure this forum displays my images in right size, so I also post links:

As far as I know, the only 1080 in YT is 1920x1080.  Do you're scalling your video from 1280x960 to 1440x1080, which is 1.333 PAR, then YT is scalling again from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080, which is 1.0 PAR.  Since it can't add data it doesn't have there's not much it can do.

You'd be better off rendering straight to 1920x1080, or, which is what I did when I had 1440x1080i video, downscale to 1280x720.  It will loose some data but won't be stratching/scaling as much and will give a higher quality.  If you want 1080 then I'd suggest playing the game in that res & recording at that res.

Given the source is 1280x960, I wouldn't scale it at all. I would leave it 1280x960 and encapusulate it into a 1920x1080 frame. Here's a tutorial that descibes the way it can be done in Vegas.

This is how it looks on youtube.

I would probably render a 960x720 file and let YouTube automatically pillarbox it (like it does with my 988x720 uploads). If it's 720 lines or more it will even give it an "HD" rating despite not being 16:9. That gives the viewer the option of full screen without black borders top and bottom, and most displays make a pretty good job of 720>1080 upscaling at playback. But I must say it is a very close choice between recommending that or 1440x1080.

There are 3 things I would change in your project properties, like this:

Try starting with render custom settings like this (note a few changes from your settings):

You could increase/reduce the bit rates until you get the quality you want.

Alternatively you could try encoding with an external x264 GUI such as Handbrake or MeGUI, and there is an automated way to do that here: http://www.vegasvideo.de/vegas-2-handbrake-en It will give you significantly better quality per bit than the native Vegas encoders.
