HELP! Pan/Crop Problem in Vegas Pro 20 that I CAN NOT figure out!

Larmz wrote on 6/10/2023, 10:35 PM

I just purchased Vegas Pro 20 to prepare a video for my father's memorial. I have used Vegas in the distant past, when I knew it as Sony Vegas . . . I'm familiar with the Pan/Crop feature and used it a lot. However, I'm having an issue now and I just can't figure out what the problem is . . . When I try to pan/crop a photo, the output is not matching what the feature says it should . . . See the photos below.

The first photo, there's no modification and everything is fine.

But in the second, you see that the output doesn't match the crop, and in fact it added the right side of the photo on the left side of the output. Notice that the crop lines on the left and the preview pane on the right.

And in the last photo, the output should be just showing my sisters lower face (see the crop lines), but the output is showing the top of her head.

I have a feeling this is a very easy setting, but I'm so frustrated with it! I've tried many different photos and types of photos! I can't figure it out at all and I need to get this video done for his service . . . Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Help!! Thank you!

@Larmz

As a diagnostic procedure:

  • Select Options/Preferences/File I/O and Options/Preferences/Video tabs and set to match this picture.
  • Close and restart Vegas Pro.
  • Report the results.

Thank you so so much for your help . . . I did as you instructed. Still having the issue (see photos below).

When I move the grid lines in the pan/crop window, they are simply not matching what is then showing in the preview pane. As you see in the top photo below, it seems like it's rearranging the photo (or showing the left and right sides, but not the middle...) IN the second photo below, the preview should be zoomed to her mouth, but it's showing the background windows?!

This is so strange to me and frustrating - and stressful as I try to get this memorial video completed.

Any further thoughts?

(Forgive me if this posts twice...)

I uploaded a video of what's happening. As you see in the video, as I zoom in and out on the pan/crop window, the preview pane is just whacky and has no relation to what the pan/crop lines direct should be showing . . .

You don't have the sync cursor enabled

Dexcon wrote on 6/10/2023, 11:56 PM

It looks like you've got the Preview screen set to 'Split Screen View':

Further, you are adjusting the pan/crop at the end of the pan/crop timeline (thus creating the node at the end of the timeline) rather than with the pan/crop curser at the beginning of the pan/crop timeline - unless you are purposely creating the end of timeline node to create a zoom in.

In any event, what is probably happening is that the split screen is showing a half screen of the image at the point where you are editing and the other half of the screen is showing some of the origtinal image.

Solution: turn off the split screen view (unless there is something else going on as well).

You might try resetting Vegas Pro to default settings using this guide.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

We'll need to know more about your system environment. Work B and C from this link.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

While I appreciate that you own a camera, the best way to post a screen shot is to use the Print Screen key, Control V into Paint that comes with Windows and save as .png or .jpg for upload to this site.

Larmz wrote on 6/11/2023, 12:10 AM

You guys are great. I haven't solved it yet, but tried syncing the cursor and making sure split screen is off. Still having the problem. I'll now try to reset to defaults and if that doesn't work, I'll provide more info about the environment. And yes, I will use a screen shot going forward. Thank you guys again - I appreciate this tremendously.

@Larmz Hi can you show the timeline,? we can't see what events/pictures you have on there .

Larmz wrote on 6/11/2023, 12:22 AM

Here's the timeline - the only thing on there is this single photo. I just tried resetting back to all defaults, and that didn't seem to help . . . I'm going to gather the environment information now and get back to you all.

Larmz wrote on 6/11/2023, 12:36 AM

I rendered the video to show that it's doing it on the final video. As you can see in the screenshot, this should just be a straight zoom into the photo, but the preview and the rendered video jump all over the place . . .

Former user wrote on 6/11/2023, 12:40 AM

@Larmz Thanks, just needed to know hat was behind the Pan/crop window 👍

In your video the screen seems to jump from half screen etc.. so info of your PC is needed.

An easy option that will show a lot about your system is on the Taskbar bottom of your screen - right click - Taskmanager, click on Performance - highlight the CPU at the top so the CPU name can be seen at the top of the graph, make that window bigger if needs be so shows the GPU at the bottom,

B - ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

VEGAS Version & Build = VERSION 20, BUILD 403

Windows Edition & Version = WINDOWS 10 HOME, Version 22H2, OS Build 19045.2965

Camera/App that created your footage = Using various photo formats - from Canon DSLRs to Iphones.  All photo formats are having the same problem.

Exact symptoms of your problem = I think I provided this already on this forum.

Does the issue appear when playing your timeline, or only in rendered videos? = BOTH

C - YOU WANT A QUICK ANSWER?

In many cases you will be asked for this information, so it can help everyone if you provide it "up-front" with your post:

What if you uncheck "adjust source media to better match your project"?

Your images and render are different aspect ratios which VEGAS could be compensating for at the render stage.

Former user wrote on 6/11/2023, 2:07 AM

I just purchased Vegas Pro 20

@Larmz Hi, you say "NO RENDERING ISSUE THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE PREVIEW ISSUE" (capitals is shouting) when you say previous issue do you mean a previous version of Vegas, if that's the case you can't compare a newer version with an old one, your old version might have worked ok with your system that is a similar date but times move on & hardware/PCs are having to become more powerful,

Your PC might simply be underpowered for VP20,

Your CPU is 2 Cores:  (in 2 physical modules), the Taskmanager confirms that, I don't know why it's named "12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G",

12GB of RAM is less than the 16GB recommended by Vegas System requirements,

& you don't have a separate GPU, you just have the integrated graphics version.

Can you open Taskmanager again, right click on the CPU graph - Change graph to - Logical Processors & post the pic pls . Like this

Larmz wrote on 6/11/2023, 2:25 AM

@RogerS - Thank you... Tried that but it didn’t make a difference.

@Gid - Sorry for yelling! I was just trying to distinguish my responses from the questions!

As for your question, all I mean is that what shows in the preview pane is exactly what renders. They both display the problem. I’m not referring to a prior version of the program.

I get that my computer isn’t the most powerful, but this just doesn’t feel like a “lack of power” type issue. Nothing is lagging or giving the “Vegas is working…” notice, or the program isn’t crashing… It feels like a glitch of some sort or a setting that needs to be corrected. Of course, I could be wrong.

I will send the screenshot tomorrow. Thank you all for your help… I truly appreciate it.

Former user wrote on 6/11/2023, 2:50 AM

@Larmz Yep I didn't think you were shouting, I just wanted to point it out, at the top of a new comment there's Bold or italics, there's an option with " & an arrow under it that puts sentences like this to show it's a quote -

Like this

press the " to get back to normal writing mode 👍

Sometimes with systems/PCs regardless of the power, if there's a problem that shows on the preview in Vegas it also renders out like that, I don't know the facts but it's something like how Vegas receives the info, it then stores it like that & then uses that bad info in the render,, 🤷‍♂️

PS Vegas Pro System requirements

UPDATE: For those interested to know… I’m trying everything I can think of, and one thing seemed to work… when I reduce the size of the image file (by just about any factor), the pan/crop seems to work perfectly.

I reduced the photo size to 35%, 40%, 50% and 75%… and each version worked perfectly.

In terms of memory size of the photos, it doesn’t appear there’s any difference between 1 mb photos or 10 mb photos - either way, once I reduce the size, it thereafter works.

Certainly not ideal as I’m working with 400+ photos, but at least I have a workaround.

Thanks to all of you for your help… if I come across any other relevant info, I’ll be sure to post.

To anyone still facing this problem and looking for a solution, just open the Event Pan/Crop window, right-click on the image and choose Match Output Aspect.

@nickmetaxas Nope, sorry but this is some kind of graphics problem, If you look at the first picture, that Pan/Crop selection shouldn't show like that in the Preview window esp after turning off split screen, & in the video it's seen to be splitting/glitching.

Match Output Aspect has nothing to do with this & won't fix it.

Maybe this old post should be closed as there was no reason or resolve & prob wont be for the OP.

PS, I'm the red Former User in the comments above.
