HEVC / encoder settings for Ryzen CPU

c_future81 wrote on 10/5/2020, 3:23 PM

Finally with Vegas pro 18 editing h.265 videos is working using a Nvida GTX 1070 and Ryzen 1800X 8 core CPU.

Until Vegas 17 editing, preview, timeline was soooo slow - impossible to enjoy working.

But I have a last question / issue:

My windows 10 system is freshly installed but I only get intel QSV and NV encoder as an option when choosing to render in magix hevc 4k. also when looking into the render template customization .. its just the same.

What should be there as CPU render option when creating HEVC videos using a Ryzen CPU?

When using Intel QSV first time a pop up message appeared, that Mainconcept codec was loaded. Rendering speed in 4k is around 1 frame a second :-(

So a 1.5 minute clip takes 40 minutes to render.

thanks a lot.

actually the file just created using intel QSV is corrupted.. video is playing too fast after some seconds and audio is off sync.

It being corrupted makes sense, a Ryzen system doesn't contain Intel QSV. Not sure why the option is even appearing for you.

If you want HEVC CPU encodes, you can try Voukoder.

Hi @fr0sty

what options should I have rendering HEVC / h.265 4k videos / or how would you get it done?

I only have this options:

I'd use NVENC, as CPU HEVC encodes are ridiculously slow.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I use NVENC for test renderings but quality wise CPU for the final version is just better in the end.

But still - something is strange here.

Thanks. But currently I just don't know how to render via cpu. If I do select qsv I get a broken movie rendered.

I remember that at vegas pro 17 I had the mainconcept encoder offered within magix hevc templates. Now, not anymore and I did not change my hardware.

Magix aren't talking. Either they forget the software HEVC in this release, or they got a cease and desist as they weren't paying the correct licencing fee's. With other Video editors you often have to pay extra for HEVC encode or it's in the paid version but not free version. If you do a search for voukoder , you'll find a really good 3rd party free plugin for Vegas that does X265 software encode

fr0sty wrote on 10/7/2020, 7:05 PM

That can't be true, because VEGAS still supports CPU HEVC encodes in HDR. It's likely a bug.

This is the official answer from Magix:

Sehr geehrter Magix Kunde,
vielen Dank, dass Sie uns kontaktiert haben.

The Ryzen CPU does not offer any hardware acceleration. Please use the NVencoder of your graphics card. This is the graphics solution on your machine.

I replied again asking how can I render hevc CPU (NON accelerated) only in my case because there is no option for that.

still waiting for a proper new reply....

btw -- Voukoder is actually not bad.. just played around with its settings to get good results in output file size and qulity and actually its pretty nice. thank you

It's actually higher quality than the mainconcept encoders that you were seeking.
