How to find out (edited) clip length

bitman wrote on 2/17/2017, 3:17 AM

Something I am struggling with is that I so far have not found an easy way to find out how long an edited clip is on the timeline (when not being the first clip). Say I insert a clip after 10 clips on the timeline, I edit the this new clip 11 so it is shorter in duration. How to find out the new length of clip 11 in a fast and easy way. (I could drag that clip to the beginning in an empty track and read from timeline the total length of that clip, but that is cumbersome). I could also draw a loop region around that clip and subtract end from start, but that involves math...

Soution1:
Draw a loop region around that clip and watch on the right bottom corner, the time is shown in the "Selection Length".

Solution2:
Menu: Options > Preferences... > Video: Fourth line: "Show source frame numbers on event thumbnails as"
Time.

Marco. wrote on 2/17/2017, 3:44 AM

If you double-click an Event in the timeline the Loop-Region will be drawn automatically around that Event and at the same time the duration of that Loop-Region will be displayed on the right corner down the timeline.

Also there is an Extension available which opens a new dockable window which will always display the duration of the currently selected Event. It is a compiled script made for former versions of Vegas Pro. It will not work with Vegas Pro 14 and it does not work with Vegas Pro 13 on my system (don't know why).
If you use an older version of Vegas Pro you might take a look into this discussion. In the post from 02/07/2015, 07:09 PM you will find a download link.

Thanks all, this is exactly what I was looking for (overlooked actually 😳). One of the drawbacks of an large ultra wide aspect ratio screen, the right bottom corner is far away from my line of sight!

Solution2: Seems not to give the right time compared to solution 1, weird. Maybe a bug...

also, if it is something you need to monitor , you can open VIEW> EDIT DETAILS and select EVENTS. Set your columns to see IN OUT and DURATION. This screen updates the events as you edit. It is bit busy, but keeps all of that information available instantly.

It would be handy, when while shortening an event, that you have an option to show the new event length above the cursor instead of showing now the time that the event is shortened.

Even though you are refering to another CC, ShowRecDat can also be used as a dockable window and will do the same, available for Vegaspro 13 and 14.

I tried version 3.02 of ShowRecDat but on my system it's not listed in Vegas Pro 14 then. I copied the files to C:\ProgramData\VEGAS Pro\Application Extensions\. The other pathes mentioned in the txt-file doesn't work either or doesn't exist.

Peter_P wrote on 2/17/2017, 12:11 PM

On my Windows 10 System it is copied to

C:\ProgramData\VEGAS Pro\Application Extensions

On some system the *.DLLs from other systems must be activated in the file properties.

Strange. Downloaded anew, copied anew to same path and it now works.

The main reason I am still using SVP13 is the "ShowEvenfLength" extension that someone developed a while ago; I wish that same someone would make it available for VP14 or somebody else would make a new one. It provides a dock able window that show the event length of an event the cursor is sitting on and is continuously updated when one changes the event length.

This is also shown in the ShowRecDat window on the top. But I could extract this function to an extra CC if there is a demand.

I like the ShowRecDat extension for the additional information, would like to see a short header "Event time:" and one for the second time indication too. But, I do prefer the ShowEventLength extension for it's simplistic interface which takes less space and the fact that you can copy one event length and past it on another or multiple events. To be honest, this whole extension should be part of Vegas to begin with.

I just noticed a difference in the way the event length is displayed. The two extensions mentioned here show the same length but if I enable to show the timecode under preferences, it's off by a frame. Any ideas?

This is because the timecode starts at value 0:00:00:00, so if you have a clip with one frame length this will be timecode value zero.

OldSmoke wrote on 2/18/2017, 11:24 AM

So Vegas counts the frames and start counting at 0(zero) instead of one?

Yes, I think every video system does this way. If it would start counting frame #1 it would have skipped frame #0.

The timecode you see isn't a length, it is a numerical definition of each single frame.

OldSmoke wrote on 2/18/2017, 11:42 AM

I always thought 0:00:00:00 is at the beginning of the first frame and 0:00:00:01 is at the end of the first frame?

I don't seem to be able to get the ShowRecDat extension to show up in VP14; no matter where I copy it.

Think of timecode as names for each frame. 0:00:00:00 is the name of the first frame (if "naming" really starts with 0:00:00:00). Then 0:00:00:01 is the name of the second frame.

But a clip's timecode could start even anywhere else. Its first frame could also be 3:47:23:12.

or do you mean the first second in an event starts with frame 0?

Anyways, I do accept that it is what it is but it sure could well be called 1 too.

So why is than that the extensions are showing it differently?
