Does anyone know how to avoid canceling while rendering a project in Vegas? I have wasted untold hours of time simply because there is no confirmation dialog after hitting the cancel button.
While it is definitly not enough to switch to any other NLE!!!! I do understand the complaint. When you render the cancel button is highlighted, so a simple bump of the enter key will cancel a render. Seems like there would be just cause to have an idiot warning before it actually stops the render.
Even if you hit cancel what was rendered to that point is well rendered. If you hit cancel by accident then insert the "rendered" file back in Vegas (new project) just to see how far it got, note the result, then continue with the render from that point. If you're printing to tape for example no harm is done. You'd have file A, file B, totally transparent for a DV AVI. A MPEG would need to be joined. Again, not really a big deal. The only time you lose is if Vegas locks up during the render or you have some system crash.
The "Render cancelled by user" message appears on the Render window before it closes down.
Now I understand your situation, it sounds fair enough to ask for an "Are you sure you want to cancel render" window to appear before actually stopping.
In the meantime - just make sure you are careful - accidentally cancelling shouldn't be a common occurence, and the fact that it's possible is no reason to punish yourself by going back to Premiere ;)
It'd be fairly easy to do IF you were also using the PC for something else at the same time. If your going to do that at least minimise VV, that should make it a bit harder to cancel by mistake.
Even having a 'Are you sure(Y/N)?" message still doesn't make things goof proof. Many years ago I was fronted by an idiot engineer who complained that his PC had deleted all the files and could I please restore them from tape. When I asked how he managed to do that he said he meant to type DIR *.* but instead typed DEL *.*. I pointed out to him that DOS does ask another question before proceeding to trash your files. He thought it presumptuous of Bill to ask if he was certain if he wanted a list of his files!
Good point. I'm not feeling a lot a love here though, so do think I'll see what's up in the new Premiere.
I always felt there was a lot of help available for Premiere (maybe because it's so necessary).
In general I have found a lot of arrogant people on the Sonic Foundry boards, and any time you bring up even a possibility that there might be a flaw in the program(s), you are immediately attacked by the "know-it-alls" almost as though they were in ka-hootz with Sonic Foundry (though I know they aren't). The fact that there is no way to segregate the boards between newbies and old hacks is a problem. There are so many good asynchronous messaging environments around these days--and most of them are free. I don't understand why a company as successful as Sonic Foundry chooses to use a platform that's so inadequate. There isn't even a "notify" setting to send you an email when your message has been responded to, and in my experiecne these days, that's just commonplace--even for "shareware" messageboards and the like.
I'm generally unimpressed by Sonic Foundry's support. I find the knowledgebase also quite cumbersome compared to other systems.
I always open up some other program window while rendering ... even if it's just notepad or solitaire, and have that in front of Vegas. That way if someone should happen along and accidentally brush the keyboard then that program will take the input instead of risking an accidental click of Vegas' cancel button.
Yes indeed, this function really should have a confirmation dialog.
This must rate as the craziest weekend on this forum.
So far we've had somone complain that the Play event will not cancel in the timeline and another complaint that renders are too easy to cancel.
As a part time programmer my sympathies go out to the coding team at SoFo.
And as for compaints about the design of this forum itself its the only VV one I can be bothered to read. All the others I find too confusing to work out what's where, maybe if they were the only choice I'd get my brain around them but they just seem complicated because they can be, and oh yeah, at least this one doesn't eat up bandwith and assault me with things I can neither afford to buy or buy in this country.
Robert as a programmer, you'll problably appreciate the humor in this.
Manys years ago in the 70's when I first got bit by the computer bug the company I was working for was going through the always painful process of converting their manual accounting systems to computerized.
I was the new kid, and was hired mostly because been there, done that. Now picture this. The guy in charge of this massive project was the company treasurer. An Irish guy in his 60's that liked a liquid lunch if you know what I mean. So at least once a week the treasurer, named Charlie, the controller (a yes man that never would dare to disagree with Charlie on anything), me and the head programmer would go to lunch.
Anyways this poor programmer was into flow charts big time. He would always bring them along when we went to lunch, even his symbol template so he could make changes as Charlie issued commands. About 40 minutes into lunch Charlie was feeling no pain and some of what he suggested made no sense. About an hour later at the end of lunch Charlie was near the point we had to almost carry him back to the car. The programmer had a whole new bunch of changes to make in our new computerized accounting system and me just shaking my head wondering what did I get into.
Oh, you're wondering about that accounting system? Well about 9 months later we got it finished by mostly ignoring Charlie. He liked it. So much he took us to an all day lunch. We left for "lunch" at about 10:30AM. The cost? About five times what a canned system would have cost. But then Charlie coudn't have taken credit for "designing" it.
pbnyc,
I think the reason you're getting blasted here is because the tone of your original post. Instead of just asking the question, you "threatened" to go to Premiere and told everybody "BUYER BEWARE"
I think having a confirmation on cancel would be nice. But you have to understand that the need for one is solely due to instances of user error and not a flaw in the program. It is, after all you who are making the mistake by cancelling the render in the first place.
Think about it. This feature you ask for. Wouldn't it be labeled as a "user friendly" feature add and not a "bug fix"? By suggesting that it is a problem with the program you are opening yourself up for attack.
I had a little fun ONLY because he made a stupid HUMAN mistake then he attempts to blame the software. You'll note I and others STILL tired to help him. Some people don't want to be helped. They just want to rant.
<humor>
I really think people should be required to pass some kind of exam prior to being allowed to touch a computer keyboard similar to what you go through to get a driver's license merely to protect them from themselves.
I guess why they have TWO guys that need to turn their key at the same time in missle silos to effect a launch. Image if not. Ooops... how come the missle launched, I didn't mean to turn the key, how come I didn't get are you sure message.
I know you're joking but...following is a TRUE story.
There are a couple inventors (German I think, that I saw on the Science channel) that have taken one of those ultra light helicopters and configured it to also be road legal. The rotors come off. Duh! The thing is BOTH a motorcycle like looking vehicle and it does fly, two seater too. So far they can't get much financial backing. They claimed in the story if they sell 10 prototypes for $50,000 each, they will go into production. They didn't say what MPG it gets. <wink>
You guys wanting a flying car need to start keeping an eye on www.moller.com. I've been watching them for the last year as they've gone from theory to prototype to now working on a prototype designed for the assembly line. We may see this in our lifetime. Wouldn't that be cool.
Have you tried clicking on the start bar to take all programs out of focus? hat works. You could also enable the logon screen saver for 1 minute.
Not to be mean, but it does sound silly that you've accidently hot the enter/space bar/esc key lots of times. I've never seen a program that wants to confirm a cancel. I've found most people annoyed by "Are you sure you want to cancel" dialogs. I am. I disable them on all the programs I use. Are you really sitting by your computer waiting for the render to finish? I usually get up and do something else and the hitting the enter/space bar/esc key isn't an issue.
Also, I use Premiere 6 at work, and I don't remember a confirmation when I cancel a render. Of course I've never accidently cancled a render, and only render when I want to wait for it.
