How to use (convert) a MOV file?

Ol' robbyk is a happy man, I just extracted and installed the msi components but not the executable and my MOV project (1/3) is up and running and I'm off to the races! Thank you Lord I needed this and thank you everybody for your kind and gracious time and help!

Sorry it didn't work. Can you share a sample file of an original file? (e.g. on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com) I'd like to do some tests with it and also alert the developers to it.

I'm also comfortable having Quicktime for Windows 7.7.9 installed so that the codec is on my system. I never ever open the player.

I can also make a new MOV file from the Q2n a little later this week, just a little clip if that is preferred :)

There are links to various sharing services in part C-3 of this post. Just post the link in this thread if you do it. But yes, 1.32GB is a bit excessive. Just a few seconds would be useful, and I'd also like to alert the developers to it if that's OK.

Does that mean you installed part of Quicktime for Windows?

OK when I make another small MOV file soon (I just need to finish the one I'm working on), I'll post here so you know and then set it up for sharing. I hope it will be of help!

So I downloaded QT 7.7.9 and  extracted it with 7-zip (or WinRAR) to yield 4 files:

1.) AppleapplicationSupport (Windows Installer Package) --> Supposedly these are .msi files?

2.) AppleSoftwareUpdate (Windows Installer Package)

3.) QuickTime (Windows Installer Package)

4.) QuickTimeInstallerAdmin.exe

Much of what I found in a google search (~2015), including Microsoft, etc., suggested installing 1 & 2 only, and then running the updater and looking for quicktime, then install that package and it somehow bypasses the coding which disallows QT from being installed on Win10 (supposedly present in #4). I tried that and after two updates there was only a iCloud installer present.

I found one very recent post (2017) which installed the first three only and it worked for him and he could pull MOV files into Vegas. So I tried that, it installed a QT, and my MOV files were able to be pulled into Vegas. My first inclination of hope came when I selected the AVCHD 1920X1080 24p and when I pulled the MOV in, Vegas asked me if I wanted to match the settings and then changed it to 30p (or the next one up, I forget). I had that set on my Q2n last year and my son said that would not be needed but I forgot to reset the setting to 24p (now to do later). Anyhow, all URL's said, do not install #4.

So most of what I read suggests that a malicious file must be pulled into QT to be of a danger but most also suggested since Apple gave no details of the security breach, it is still unknown. Anyhow, I have no need to use QT, especially since Windows Media Player now played the MOV file!

So what I installed and I didn't, I don't know, but I'm back in business and happy as the cardinal singing outside my window in the rain at 40 degrees :)

Finally, on my previous win 7 pc and an older version of Vegas, when I pulled the MOV file into Vegas, the music and the video did not match. At first, I realigned them and uploaded to YouTube and that was off. So I repeated the whole thing, kept them mis-aligned, produced the music, checked it in QT and then uploaded, all was now aligned. So I had some kind of a glitch in Vegas which I just had to ignore. I still edited on the basis of the video. I no longer have that glitch so I'm even more happy!

Thanks again and I'll post back when I have a little clip.

Thanks for the details. Looking forward to a clip when you have a chance, as some of your experience with this format is surprising.

Here's the clip link to  VegasTest1_022718 on dropbox, hope this is what you need:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7dmsse34zrzbcqw/VegasTest1_022718.MOV?dl=0

I believe it is1920X1080-30p,MOV file, 60Mb, 48KHz/24bit, stereo audio

Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Once you have it I will delete the link but I will save the file if you need it again for anything.

Thanks kindly, RobbyK

Thanks for the sample Robert. It opens perfectly for me with the Quicktime codec in Movie Studio 14 and Vegas Pro 14. In Vegas Pro 15 it opens with the native so4compoundplug codec, so no need to install Quicktime. I *think* that same codec is included in Movie Studio 15 (I didn't install that yet). I also tried that FFmpeg "re-wrap" that we discussed previously, and that didn't go as well as it usually does. It created a file that wouldn't open in Movie Studio 14, and with very loud distorted audio in other applications.

I've just checked and an old mov file from a 4mp still camera was opened with qt7plug.dll but a more recent mov file from an iphone used so4compoundplug.dll. Note it's so4 not so3. This is with MS15Platinum trial. So Quicktime isn't needed.

If I read you right, that bodes well for future updates, that is great news!

But I did and no problem to open that file in VMS 15 and not having QT installed.😄

Well that sounds like more good news!
