Ignorance is truly bliss.  I believe anyone can twiddle some knobs and get somewhat acceptable results, but we shouldn't minimize what real specialized professionals do for a living.  I've been working on my own cars for 40 years, but I wouldn't dare call myself a professional auto mechanic.

Neither should we assume that this is some voodoo that cannot be learned unless you spend 50 years studying it.

And the only thing that makes somebody a specialist is the fact that they only twiddle a limited number of knobs.

So, I spend 10 years twiddling audio knobs and become an audio specialist, then I spend the next 10 years twiddling video knobs and become a video specialist. Now I am both an audio and video specialist. See how that works? Not really complicated.

Being a specialist not only requires twisting the proper knob but having the knob in the first place. That is, having the zillion dollars of equipment that all the specialists use example---Star Wars light and Magic Digital special effects equipment.

also helps to know which knob to twiddle for what purpose, why it does what it does, and how it does what it does. and of course, knowing which knobs NOT to twiddle.

at the end of the day if you get regularly paid for twiddling knobs then you're a professional.

While I was in France I saw Picasso painting on the street corner so I stopped to watch him. I stood there while he created the most magnificent painting in only 10 minutes. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said €20,000 Euro. I said, €20,000 Euro? That’s €2,000 Euro per minute! He said, "You are not paying me for the 10 minutes it took to create the painting... you are paying me for the 20 years it took me to learn how to make a painting in only 10 minutes!". :-D

But probably a good investment, JR - it could be worth 20,000,000 Euro today.

It reminds me of a years old line about the latest hit singer/actor/etc - "it took him/her 20 years in the industry to become an overnight success".
