In camera proxies vs Vegas proxies?

My new Sony A7iv will make proxy files in the camera as I shoot.  Sounds like a big time saver if I needed to use proxy files on a project.  Is it?

I understand how to make proxies in Vegas.  It does take some time but once made it seems effortless when it’s time to render in the original resolution.   In the long run, am I better off using Vegas Proxies or in camera ones?

I'm wondering when I see your system specs that you need proxies at all. On the system in my signature I don't need proxies and can preview 4k50 at preview best/full.

VEGAS doesn't yet have a great workflow for in camera proxies. For many formats they aren't necessary with a modern computer, especially if it has Intel decoders.

Yes -- me too. I can do 4K, 4.2.2. 10 bit files on "preview best" or "preview auto" .. I noticed the proxy setting on the A7iv camera and was curious if Vegas could handle that.

The world of 4K and 10 bit and such is all new to me. Not sure I really need to shoot in 10 bit. But my camera was getting on in years, nearly 10 so I thought it was time to break out. Lots to learn now.

Thanks guys!

Personally, I stay away from camera-created proxies. They push the bandwidth of recording media; if the recording media cannot keep up, frames get dropped. They also cause recording media to run out of space more quickly. Additionally, I like to back up camera footage before hitting the sack. And the larger it is thanks to proxies, the less sleep I get.

If proxies are a necessity for something like a 4k multi-cam project, making them with a script might be a better choice than in-camera. An ffmpeg/powershell script can enforce matching clip names for Swap Video Files and you can let it run all night if necessary, unattended. Could also probably be done with Vegas Scripting, letting Vegas do the proxy rendering with any preset just like Batch Render does.

@xberk Is the 10-bit 4:2:2 you tried avc or hevc? My recollection is that my 11900k handled 10-bit 4:2:0 hevc better than 4:2:2 avc when I had the uhd750 decoding and renders continue to look better too.
