Is it really that difficult to make the text window resizable?

Makuadar wrote on 1/29/2026, 12:34 AM

Vegas Pro has the ability to expand the text window. But this function does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is incredibly frustrating, even though the window settings simply require just specifying an anchor in all directions. Do the developers with 20 years of experience not know this?

I won't speak for everyone, but I know that I have been waiting for them to refresh the Titles & Text tool since I switched over to Vegas Pro with VP19.

I believe it's been mentioned by some of the devs that pop in on here that they also want to redesign it into something more modern, but it is far from being the top of their priority compared to other features.

Primarily edit footage captured via OBS from video games, with some live action bits mixed in.

@Makuadar The Vegas text generator doesn't create windows in the preview or rendered output. Just text. When I want the text to appear in a window/box, I add pip-fx as media-fx on the text event. The text generator does have a background color setting with an opacity slider setting, however. That control affects the whole preview screen unless pip-fx is on the text media event.

I was the one who said that because it's fundamental to even being able to see a window/box. The Vegas text generator makes the background transparent by default. The background color control has an opacity slider next to it which allows the background color to become non-transparent, making the boundaries of it's effect visible. Alone, the effect is on the entire preview screen. To get a visible text-box, which I understand if what you want to learn how to do, try manipulating the background color, it's opacity, and adding pip as a media-fx. If you really don't want the resizable window you asked for, just resizable text, you can do that by just manipulating the font size.

did you use Vegas Pro at all? It looks like you have no idea why you are posting in this thread. Did you see my screenshot? What can be done here?

Robert Johnston wrote on 1/29/2026, 4:43 PM

@Makuadar There's nothing that can be done about it. If you need more room, you will have to use an external editor like Microsoft Notepad, then copy text in that and paste in Vegas. The size of the text editor window is fixed, it won't resize when you resize the Media Generator window.

Vegas gives you a WYSIWYG view on the timeline preview. It would be great if you could expand the window, but not a showstopper.

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but why go through all of this? The background of the text can be limited to only the text block by checking the "Crop Background To Text Box" check box.

Am I misunderstanding your statement?

Also, you can resize the text in the textbox text by holding CTRL while rolling the mouse wheel. This will adjust the text size inside the window without affecting the actual text size of the text in preview / render.

@Makuadar How about an extension like this? It can work as an floating window and can be freely resized.

In fact, it only took me about a day to write this text box, just after I saw your post..

This editing tool is expected to be included when I release my UltraPaste v1.4.0. It might be in one or two months.

Just one of several annoyances with Titles & Text which if they were fixed would make a very useable titler. You wouldnt think it was rocket science but I guess the developers are too engrossed in other problems and/or dont understand how the original code works.
In this case my workaround is to make the font size small, 9pt, so it's readable in the text box and then adjust scale to fit the text to the screen, then make your own presets. The default font sizes are huge. It doesnt affect the onscreen resolution.

I think @anthony-chiappette is the easiest option, because it doesn't affect the actual font size, but only changes the size in the Title&Text window.

oh wow! it really works! It's a very sloppy solution, but at least it will help a little. Thank you! If you guys have the opportunity, please pass this on to MAGIX so that they can fix this in at least version 24 of Vegas.

Vegas Team is well aware of shortcomings of the Title&Text tool, which is not further being developed. There is a new Vegas Titler in planning, no idea if this new Titler will see daylight in VP24.

The Protype Titler does create better text effects, but it is incredibly cumbersome and difficult to use. I have never figured out how to get animated text to work, and adding one simple text effect can take several minutes for me. The Titles and Text FX are streets ahead of Protype Titler where ease of use is concerned.

Titles and Text has many limitations, the biggest being text can only be one color, but the interface is easier to use. I would not mind if the "new" titles and text added the ability to use more than 1 color and allow fill effects for the text. Oh, and prevent the text from reverting back to default settings in certain situations, and stop adding the default text effect at the end of the text block.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I use keyframes to adjust text accordingly. I suppose it's not technically animated in that sense, but i find it difficult to accomplish in Protype Titler.

@anthony-chiappette In Title&Text you can use only the fixed animation templates. Only changes you can make to those animations, is changing the speed of the animation. You can create in Title&text a simple own animation but cannot save that animation as an animation template.

In ProType Titler you can change each used parameter of the animation templates and create your own animation templates. But unfortunately you cannot create an own animation template in ProType Titler and use that template in Title&Text.
