Lower volume in multiple clips?

@john-brown Hi, & thanks for the imput 👍

Try the Noise Reducer in Vegas combined with volume envelope adjustments.

I'm going to try a few but like those others 'Attack Speed' 'Release Speed' etc. don't mean a great deal to me, & volume envelope adjustments are what I've been doing but it's tedious & getting all the same machines at the same level is also a bit of a faff.

I tried improving your previous effort and I tried a couple of noise reducers, combined with some EQ - high pass filter (remove bottom end below 50Hz, and low pass filter to remove a bit of the screeching along with a bit of reduction in the higher frequencies. Worked well.

I sort of remember that, was that in MMS & what yr? I do remember asking on the Magix forum about this as this is something I keep trying to improve on beyond manually adjusting the envelope etc.

About the best of those that I tried was with iZotope RX10 Repair Assistant. It needs to learn what is noise and what is voice so the best is to have a clip with a machine on, stopping and some talking.

I can create a vid (I might have one somewhere) with voice & machine, prob is it's multiple machines each with different noise levels, some are just loud & some screech..

I noticed in your previous request that there was a significant difference between left and right channels (see the image below). It would be interesting to see what you have now. I suggest that you export the audio to a wave file and share so that others can have a go at it.

That was my old phone & one of the ones I mentioned that I destroyed the mic on either dropping it or from the noise of the machines, I suspect the latter as it wasn't the first I'd broken, I now have a Bluetooth mic to hopefully prevent this happening again (it won't help, I'll forget to plug it in 🤦‍♂️😂), The clips in the OP are from my Samsung S23 Ultra & Gopro11, both I bought early 2021.

If I render a wave you won't be able to see the different noises & what they ref on screen...

I used Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 3 for my test of your previous audio. You can see the difference between the channels and the resulting repairs "suggested" by RX10.

You can get SFACL4 for £27.99 from Magix, if only to get the iZotope plugins and SpectraLayers Elements noted by @rraud at a low cost. It's not the full SpectraLayers, but it has noise reduction that seems to be quite good, and I believe that it can do some sound separation. There is a fairly steep learning curve to use it.

Like you say 'there is a fairly steep learning curve to use it', I rarely venture further than the volume button, many of my vids aren't this noise intensive so I've just gone along & reduced each in turn, If I get one down to -18db & another down to 19db it's not really noticeable, but of course ideally I'd like to set al the same machine clips to the same level.

The RX10 plugins should work in Vegas 21 as it has VST3 capability. I only have Vegas 18.

I tried RX7 Noise Reducer in Vegas 18 and there seems to be a problem as it would throw up an error when I tried to play back with Learn on. Maybe someone can test the RX10 plugins in Vegas 21 to see if they work.

Again I need to learn the basics before I can think of experimenting ewith different fxs or software, there's seems to be quite a few.

For the future, to get better voice, I suggest that you not say anything whilst filming or at least not while a machine is on, then add narration afterwards during editing. That gives you full control and you can use ducking.

Can't do that, I can't point at a screw & then add narration after. that's just an example but it applies to pretty much all my content, quite often I'm holding, pointing etc & a voice over just won't fit.

My voice isn't too much of a prob though, I don't talk while the machines are running, you simply wouldn't hear me, sometimes the camera is mounted on the bench so voice volume can be lower than wanted, but occasionally I mumble rather than explaining with a clear voice simply because I'm thinking out loud rather than 'creating a vid', if that makes sense. & the Bluetooth mic does help if I'm further away from the camera.

@rraud @john-brown I've created a shorter FHD version of my project, 6.43mins 252mb file size, it has multiple machines, there's no voice but the atmospheric background noises, bangs n bumps etc, need to stay at the default level & not reduced, also in parts before I turn on the machines there's a background noise of my extractor, this also needs to stay at the default level because that's when I would be talking & that extractor stays on pretty much all the time I'm machining.

I have all the orig clips so my timeline would be already cut up & each event could then be manipulated individually, you'd have to cut this sample up to replicate my timeline but as the options suggested with fxs such as Compression, Noise reduction that are applied at the track level I hope cutting it up won't be necessary for your tests.

Pls feel free to play with this. 👍

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1po2aMvF08w2Yply2L9TaMUMtmwIeZSw0/view?usp=sharing

PS. I removed all fxs from the audio track before rendering, I don't think those default ones do anything until being adjusted but just in case I removed them anyway.

@Gid Here is a project file that, when applied to your sample file, will reduce the machine noise to ~-23 LUFS and won't allow any peaks to be greater than -6 LUFS. (This is suspiciously close to the UK broadcast requirements.)  If you do a voice-over and upload to Youtube you may want to level to -14 LUFS but machine sounds will only be part of that.

If it is at least -23 LKFS, it will comply with EU -23 LUFS broadcast standard, which is just a tad more liberal.

However, global streaming and social targets are much looser, -14-15 LUFS generally. My Barricade 4 to YT offering is coming in the morning (US), it graphically shows how limiting can tame the loudest noise, without touching normal speech and ambient sounds. Until then...

@john_dennis Thanks, I'll try that when I get home later 👍 Hard to see on my phone but in the second pic why isn't there a blue circle on the audio fx if Wave Hammer filter is applied ?

@john_dennis Thanks, I was just curious 👍

I tried your Level Audio, thanks for that, I then saved it as a preset & applied it to my orig project, it works the same in there & I think that will do me, I now have a Preset that I can just apply... 👍, I tweaked a couple of the settings to slightly lower the sound of the table saw but I can go from there, experiment & hopefully understand what I'm actually doing 😵😂 I understand the Threshold, I presume that is similar to the threshold I'm used to seeing in the video effects, the other settings I'll brush my knowledge up on 👍

Play with the sliders to see what happens.

Gid wrote on 5/14/2024, 10:24 AM

@john_dennis Yep that's what I'm seeing, I dropped the threshold down to 22.00db. In a video fx the threshold is - everything at 0 & nothing at 100% (or should I say vice versa), so I'm presuming by lowering it in this audio fx it's similar & I'm just adding that little bit more to the chosen higher levels,, The other Maximiser I've still got at 6.0db.

You're forever in my Preset list 😉

The Wave Hammer Threshold Slider sets the point at which the compressor starts to attenuate sounds.

Your original audio didn't rise above -25 LUFS per the Loudness Log Algorithm...

... though instantaneous peaks likely weren't considered. Any audio below the value of the Threshold Slider should be unaffected. Any audio above the value of the Threshold Slider should be attenuated by the settings for compression Ratio, Output Gain, Attack Time and Release Time. With an Attack Time of 2ms somefast transients can get through the compressor. That's why you set the limit on the Volume Maximiser tab.

A Compression Ratio of 4 is probably fine for machine noise or crowd noise. I try to use lower numbers for music.

My goodness @Gid.

In Nebraska we would say the fit of that door passes the Silver Dollar Test. The job foreman would check the gap all the way around with a US Liberty coin he carried in his pocket.

Here's the -14 LUFS version using TB Barricade 4. Give it a look when you have time. Not a competition, just a windy day project. 🙂

Marked for Youtube.

I'm not sure if you're saying that as a positive or negative, here in England it used to be a 2p piece check which by your comment would be a good thing,

This frame was knackered, getting the gap right wasn't easy esp seeing as I'm still quite unfit, my back was killing me, also there's a shadow from the front door & I sanded off the gunked up paint on the right making the right hand gap look bigger, (my excuse anyway 😉)

@mark-y 😁👍 Took me 3-4hrs on Sunday to make this, weird shaped doors are never as easy as reg rectangle ones to make or fit so thanks. . Have a look at my YT channel, for small cabinet doors a 2mm gap is what I draw in CAD & what I try to get on the actual job,

Loved Geometry at school. TD we called it (Technical Drawing), I also did metal work at school not woodwork & wanted to be an engineer of some kind but back then my maths wasn't great . So my ideals are fairly high but working with wood is different to metal, lots more shrinkage, warping, no straight grain... even after putting all pieces through the thicknesser because each piece of wood has a different density if you put a Vernier micrometer on them each could be a mm in difference, esp if left overnight depending on atmospheric humidity 😒.

I have to lower my ideals a little working with wood but my moto is if you set your standards high when you don't reach that goal because perfection is next to impossible at least you will have still done a good job. Also this is work not play, I worked for firms for many yrs where you have to do a good job but also get it done within a reasonable amount of time. You'd see lads come on site & spend hrs doing something trying to get it perfect when the rest of us could do it in ½hr, & even then they did a crap job 😂🤦‍♂️

Making this is on YT, there's also pics on Facebook

I agree with your philosophy and closely relate to your experience, as my great-grandfather was a math savant with almost no formal education. He did complex calculations in his head down to the penny, from big job estimates to land surveying. Never owned a sextant, didn't need one. In addition to being a prairie homesteader and corn farmer, he owned a house moving business, a full team of draft horses, and huge flatbed trailers. He and his employees would move houses across the prairie up to forty miles, building roads and filling ditches to get the job done. The one story I remember is that he sawed a house in half in the 1920s, hired a second team of horses, and took 15 months to complete the job including land leveling and reconstruction.

Dan Benson was purebred Leprechaun, bragged to everyone that he was 5' tall, and no one believed him. A devout fundamentalist, he drank like any Irishman.

I breezed through every Geometry class I could take, but faltered at Derivatives and Calculus. I taught math to intellectually gifted middle school students in the 1990s, and they broke a national record on their CAT achievement tests. I got so frustrated with my woodworking mistakes I never pursued it.

This picture hangs on my wall as a daily reminder of my roots and legacy. Only hardship can create a work ethic like his. I'll send you a FB request.

@mark-y Sounds like a proper old fashioned grafter, no time for moaning about aches n pains 👍 My dad came from farming stock, he always talked about the Shire horses 👍

I don't think I was taught maths very well, school term (age) starts at September so with my birthday being in July I was one of the youngest in class & when you're young a yr is a big difference, no help at home & the teachers were crap, 30+ kids to a class prob wasn't easy, My maths has improved a lot with working simply because we work on site in metres & millimetres (not Centimetres).

Anyway I think before we get told off for going way Off Topic I think I need to tag a solution. You mentioned Wave Hammer right at the start, thankyou, but as I guess you've worked out that didn't mean a great deal to me then 🙃. So... I think if you don't mind I'll have to tag @john_dennis's comment earlier where he shared a project, I have that preset in my Vegas now, & @jetdv mentioned the Compressor, I like the idea that that it is already on the track by default, to me the controls look very similar to Wave Hammer, I don't know what the difference is between the two fxs but with john's help I'm a little bit more confident playing with it & we'll see. ,

So thankyou & to everyone who commented 👍

--

I think I would still like to find out if multiple regions can be selected & the volume lowered with the envelope. Some of my vids have just 3,4 or 5 bits of noise quite poss from the same machine, because I make playlists one vid might be 15mins long but all I'm doing is the initial cutting or planing, so to be able to watch the project through & just tweak those levels all in one without affecting anything else would be useful, (I could & have in the past as @DMT3 suggested cut the noisy bits, select those few & lowered the gain slider, or I've just moved those to a lower track & used the tracks volume slider but hey it'd be nice not to have to). also adjusting the length of a region is easy peasy just in case one is too short or too long without messing up any timeline editing .

Me too, born in June, except I was pushed ahead another year by a drama mom, so I was two years younger and graduated HS still too young to drive. Needless to say, I learned to run from bullies. My problem was having no one to teach me until I reached college.

The experience made me a better teacher than student -- my other career passion is music, which became the set of bookends for my teaching stint, which lasted 25 years.

Sent you a FB request.

Unfortunately, I can't see @john_dennis' project because of the version. If it can be Vegas 18, I would love to see it. Also wondering, can it be adapted easily to -14-15 LUFS for Youtube delivery? -23 is broadcast levels, which are quite a bit more stringent.

I can't fix the graphic, but here is a summary photo with the final settings.

Play with the sliders to see what happens.

@mark-y Hi, @john_dennis's project was just my video untouched apart from Wave Hammer being applied, basically these two Wave Hammer pictures in the picture I've quoted, I'd have to open VP18 to see if it's in there.

I've had comments on YT about the noise level, some people watch in bed with headphones on & the sudden noise of the machines can be a bit much, I think one said it woke his wife up 😂, I edit in a fairy empty room with wood floors quite often into the early hrs, the walls are thin enough to make me avoid making too much noise, so when editing & adjusting noise levels - if I can listen to it without the worry of disturbing neighbours then it'll prob be fine to upload to YT., The setting @john_dennis chose are just about right for me.

Sorry just remember he included a video in that link to the project, I don't think he would mind me sharing it on here in the interest of this post 😉

What you and John are describing, the difference in loudness between sections, is conveniently summed up in the final Dynamic Range, or LRA number after playing the video all the way through.

In light of your comments about viewer reactions, I do agree that the lowering that number without it sounding unnatural is the better choice. Setting the final LUFS up or down adjusts the whole thing, like a volume knob, without affecting the ratio between passages.

So that final LRA or Dynamic Range number provides the useful guidance here. I agree it could be lower than I chose, having hyperacusis myself as a result of playing in bands. John and I have discussed that subject before, and bursts of midrange noise can be quite annoying.

Isn't it interesting that three old guys with time on their hands can sit around, learn from each other, and have semi-intelligent discussions without resorting to character assaults and grandstanding in order to make our points. Hmmm...

@mark-y 👍 I've spent time in front of some big speakers, I was raving though 🕺 😊, & I've spent the best part of my life with noisy tools but thankfully I think my hearing is still pretty good 👍

Yep, I finished the video that includes an explanation of why I haven't uploaded any vids to YT for quite a while, It was mainly made in two parts, no noise reduction on the first bit where I'm explaining my absence but the rest of the vid where I'm machining I used @john_dennis's preset & changed the Threshold to 22db just to take the edge of the table saw,

This is it on YT if you're interested. Can you measure the LUFS on a YT vid or does it have to imported into some software?

@DMT3 You mentioned " I do some woodworking videos as well,..", do you have those online,, YT ?

@Gid Yeah, I have a couple simple ones. Was just testing the waters to see what was involved in making them. Here are the links.

and where I injured my hand

Gid wrote on 5/17/2024, 3:53 PM

@DMT3 Oh! sorry yeah I remember the hand injured one, I just opened it but turned it off, that's nasty n don't really want to see that again 🙈, hope your hand is back to something like normal, I'll have a look at the other 2 👍

Just uploaded that vid of mine ½hr ago or so, 53 comments already, my dilemma is do I reply to all, copy n paste 'Thankyou, much appreciated... ... ' gets a bit.. repetitive. Or do I just go to bed & deal with it tomorrow or in my next vid say thankyou to all. 🥱😊
