Lower volume in multiple clips?

Gid wrote on 5/12/2024, 5:08 PM

Hi, I think I've asked this before but can't find the post & it's been a while since I had to do this because I've been poorly for over a yr,

This is my avg looking timeline, the noisy bits are machine noise, I know I can add a volume envelope, select a region & lower the volume, but I have to do this on each event individually, There's 5 different machines on here each making there own level of noise & each machine is on several clips,

What I'd like to do is select the regions that contain lets say just the planer or just the saw & reduce those tool related clips/region's volumes, in other words I can't just reduce the volume of all noisy clips to the same db, that would be like reducing the overall volume of two people talking but one is talking a bit louder than the other, if that makes sense.

Audio really isn't my forte so if anyone has any suggestions I'd be very interested 👍

Use the Compressor? (it's automatically on every track - just need to "turn it on"). That will compress/reduce the loud parts but leave the softer parts alone.

Gid wrote on 5/12/2024, 6:09 PM

@jetdv Thanks I'll have a look at that, 👍 That's good to hear as quite a bit of the audio in my vids is me describing what I'm doing (not in this vid), I'm not stood in front of the camera & I haven't got a loud voice so when I have tried other 'auto' reduction options it quietens my voice too much also, but like I say I'll have a play 👍

---------

A quick play with it just reducing the Input Gain I can def hear the machines are softer & easier to listen to, they don't screech so much & then when the machines are turned off the normal sound of the room, tape measure noises, little knocks n bangs are all back to to the normal level 😁

Thanks again that's very promising, I need to search what the other controls do in Track Compressor & I'll try it on my voice in a clip that's also got machine noise 👍

If your voice and the tool noise are occurring at the same time , a comp/limiter will not help much or even make matters worse. To have more control over the two sound sources, iZ's RX or Steinberg's SpectraLayers can separate the sound to a degree. Unfortunately neither are far from free.

If it is just to keep the overall volume under control, a limiter would suffice as was previously stated. If you can post a clip somewhere, we could offer more accurate advice.

btw, welcome to the Vegas users community @Gid.

I'm a little confused, to me @Gid seems the same person as the former member @Gid, who was quite active on the forum before. Why this name change?

Also I can't find no posts anymore of the user @Gid, means they are all deleted (probably also the reason that @Gid-Joiner can't find his former posts).

If it's possible to delete all posts of a certain member, the forum search function makes no sense, because all threads with the contributions of this member will get broken.

I'm a little confused, to me @Gid-Joiner seems the same person as the former member @Gid, who was quite active on the forum before.

Indeed, @FormerUser posted video examples of loud clipped shop equipment interspersed with normal narrative at normal levels not very long ago.

If that was about the same issue from the same poster, it would be nice to have a link to the original post which contained examples.

If the OP's in-camera AGC can handle the levels, that might be the first thing to try.

Otherwise, there is a large enough gap between the two peak levels for Wave Hammer to isolate the clipped noise sections, and deal with them effectively as I suggested above.

Although any limiter should work, I also am a strong advocate for Toneboosters Barricade 4. It is a paid solution, but can be run in demo mode forever.

@3POINT  Unfortunately the forum does not have an option for a member to just "Close account" and let the members still see their previous Posting history.. The posts/comments are not deleted, but are now from a (basically) untraceable "Former user".

@vkmast Strange, I don't understand why close an account and start over with a new account. If it's just that user wants a new nickname, then just rename the account...or do I think too simple?

@3POINT @mark-y Hi, yes that's me, my previous comments are still there under @FormerUser, I didn't delete those example.

I haven't asked about this subject for at least 2yrs, sorry whoever you're thinking of I don't think it was me, as in my OP I haven't done any work since late summer 2022, no work means no recording.. If you can find that link to the post ..

I had a problem uploading on here but also on other sites online & the PC was doing some strange things., it was at the same time there were server issues with this forum when that cookies window popped up & it was hard or slow to log-in, so I did a complete wipe of a lot of things, cookies, extensions, I deleted 'stuff' from the PC, reset windows, deleted quite a few online accounts & prob didn't need to delete this one but it was 'shock n horror' clean of everything. I hadn't offended anyone & I wasn't kicked off so I hoped that there wouldn't be a prob signing back in, which there hasn't 👍

When I did sign back in it remembered my name 🤷‍♂️ Gid-Joiner so I went with that, I've just shortened it to just Gid 👍

@rraud Hi n nope I never talk while the machines are going, you wouldn't hear me & in those moments I'm too busy to be gabbing .😏

I'm at work on my phone so I'll read the other stuff about Wave hammer etc. when home 👍

Thanks 👍

If you can go through your timeline and select the events you want to lower (using CTRL to select mulitple), you can try this for volume control.

Gid wrote on 5/13/2024, 12:38 PM

@john_dennis Thanks, yep I already have questions about @jetdv's suggestion of the Compressor never mind the other stuff mentioned 🤦‍♂️😂

@DMT3 Hi, I'm watching on my phone but It looks like that is what I've done in the past, I've 397 vids on YT, not all have lots of machine noise but most have some noise & ones like this one in my OP I was just hoping maybe for a better/easier solution,

Some clips have noise & then voice all in the same clip, in your example I'd have to make a cut before & after ever noise that needs reducing, Like I say there's 5 different machines in this project, I'd have to go through each to see which machine is which. My thoughts were along the lines of if I could assign a region to each & categorise it as I went along, group those regions with others of the same machine, then I could select that group of regions & lower their volume in one go, I could then watch the project through & easily choose all Saw or planer etc. & tweak the noise of those, but it sounds like something like the Compressor or another fx might be the way.. Thanks.

I do some wookworking videos as well, and I don't think the compressor will do everything you need. I am sure you will still have to go through and isolate some of your noisy tracks to adjust. It takes time as you know. Vegasaur will select regions, but I don't see a way to name them so you can select specific ones.

Gid wrote on 5/13/2024, 12:53 PM

@DMT3 Yep I've tried in the past with an audio envelope, creating regions as i go along, I can name each region saw 1, saw2, planer 1, planer 2, I can then easily select a region with double click on it or press 1, 2, 3 etc but as you say I can't select multiple regions & drag them down to the same level.. I don't have Vegasaur so can't spk of that..

That would be useful, sometimes I need to also raise my voice along with reducing noise, I'm sure others would find a script like that useful also 👍

I really appreciate the replies from everyone with suggestions but I suspect if I did ask about this, however many yrs ago it was, the replies were similar, I'm a person who rarely strays far from the volume button so when opening these fx's they mean nothing to me & I end up searching online to try to understand what's what, I very much doubt all this can be learned in an evening or two of browsing blogs which I then inevitably have to do further searching to understand those blogs. @Gid

Hi,

Try the Noise Reducer in Vegas combined with volume envelope adjustments.

I tried improving your previous effort and I tried a couple of noise reducers, combined with some EQ - high pass filter (remove bottom end below 50Hz, and low pass filter to remove a bit of the screeching along with a bit of reduction in the higher frequencies. Worked well.

About the best of those that I tried was with iZotope RX10 Repair Assistant. It needs to learn what is noise and what is voice so the best is to have a clip with a machine on, stopping and some talking.

I noticed in your previous request that there was a significant difference between left and right channels (see the image below). It would be interesting to see what you have now. I suggest that you export the audio to a wave file and share so that others can have a go at it.

I used Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 3 for my test of your previous audio. You can see the difference between the channels and the resulting repairs "suggested" by RX10.

You can get SFACL4 for £27.99 from Magix, if only to get the iZotope plugins and SpectraLayers Elements noted by @rraud at a low cost. It's not the full SpectraLayers, but it has noise reduction that seems to be quite good, and I believe that it can do some sound separation. There is a fairly steep learning curve to use it.

The RX10 plugins should work in Vegas 21 as it has VST3 capability. I only have Vegas 18.

I tried RX7 Noise Reducer in Vegas 18 and there seems to be a problem as it would throw up an error when I tried to play back with Learn on. Maybe someone can test the RX10 plugins in Vegas 21 to see if they work.

For the future, to get better voice, I suggest that you not say anything whilst filming or at least not while a machine is on, then add narration afterwards during editing. That gives you full control and you can use ducking.

John CB
