MAJOR render issues (build 315) AMD 7900 XT

FOVAirsoft wrote on 7/6/2024, 2:22 PM

Man where do I start...

TLDR I had smooth FAST renders, updated to 315, now the renders are a skipping freezing mess taking more than 12 hours to render a 8min video when before the update it was ~1.5hrs and vegas refuses to put nearly any load on my CPU and GPU no matter what I do.

I have a decently high power system, I use to render full edited videos (8-15mins on avg), 100s of jumping moving text events, 100s of video cuts, multiple cameras, multiple resolutions (1080p on one cam, 5.3k on the other.) color grade, FX, masking, Neat Video reduce noise v5 set to 5 frames, 5.3k 60fps, etc.. the whole nine yards, in 1.5hrs. The system load on average was ~60% CPU and ~45% GPU. If i turn off neat videos noise reduction I could render a minute of video in nearly 1min5secs. Now that I updated to 315, now its 10mins for a 1min clip with no FX, text, noise reduction, color grade, nothing. Just bare unedited footage. When i click render the program instantly freezes for maybe ~10seconds, render window disappears, Vegas flickers, then it renders maybe ~50 frames, freezes for ~10 more seconds, render window disappears, Vegas flickers 10 more seconds, ~50 more frames and so on. No matter what drive I render to nor what drive vegas is installed on. Its currently on a ~6800mb/s M.2. I've been editing with vegas since vegas 12. I know very well that none of this behavior is normal and it makes me wanna pull my hair out. Every time I've ever rendered with vegas i click render, no skips, no freezes, goes right into rendering and uses plenty of the cpu and gpu. Vegas refuses to use more than 6% CPU load and 3% GPU load at any given time. No matter what format, no matter what encoder, no matter what settings I change in preferences or internal settings windows. For the last 2 nights including all day today I've uninstalled/reinstalled 6-7 times, ive CTRL-Shift clicked vegas, I've even gone as far as going through program files, appdata local, and roaming, and as well as regedit and deleted everything that says Vegas or Magix. I reverted back to build 300, back to 315, restarted my pc who knows how many times. Updated to the latest AMD drivers (24.6.1). I've changed the classic SO4, Interlop, I've put the ram preview to 75% and 0%, I've done everything I can absolutely think of here and or find on the internet. Yet I can still currently watch back 5.3k 60FPS smooth as butter at Best(Full), skip around to 1min mark, 5 min mark, no issues. (with no fx applied). Vegas only has skips and lags when rendering.

The only changes I made from speedy smooth renders, to this skippy freezy 12+hr renders mess was the 315 update. Nothing else.

The difference is likely that not all of these Fx (especially the color grading panel) are run on the GPU in build 300 and newer of VP 21, the CPU becomes a bottleneck and consequently the render takes forever.

I'd revert to build 208 though you can't take your projects with you, so revert to pre-300 versions of those project files or do a workaround like copy and paste to 20.411 and then open in 21.208.

208 may have been the one that was working perfectly for me. Any chance theres a link? I tried to search for earlier than 300 and found nothing. I appreciate the reply!

Funny enough, last weekend i had updated the Drivers to 24.6.1 when i had my AMD card, and the performance of Magic bullet and all my plug ins tanked drastically.

it was so bad, i had to do a driver roll back to 24.5.1 and my performance returned to normal.

Btw, updated to Amd 24.6.1 drivers a few days ago without issue. But I don't use 3rd party fx. And I found build 315 way slow even with 24.5.1 and sticking with build 208 for now.

The developers have about a month or six weeks to give you a stable build before the release of Vegas 22, if the traditional timeline of releases is still operative.

Wonder if they'll make it this year.

Howard gave you the link- just uninstall 21 first with add remove programs and then reinstall 208. I did that on my two systems and look forward to the improvements we've begun to see in 21.300+ being stabilized in 22.

@mark-y I asked about this in this post, so far deafly silence

PS. I've also reverted back to 208

Alright i installed build 208 and same thing, using AMD VCE im getting 3% CPU load, 2% GPU load. 12mins to render 1min of raw footage. When selecting Mainconcept HEVC im getting 99% CPU load 0% GPU, even more freezing, and 40mins to render that same 1min of raw footage, and wont stop using 99% until i kill vegas in the task manager after stopping the render. I don't understand.

Here's me recording my screen with OBS to show settings, and behavior of Vegas while editing and rendering. Recording did add skips and lags to the playback that aren't there otherwise.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WAAFmN5qJpGd9DRjAeMx99ccEITuIDrt/view?usp=sharing

And here is that 1min video file I was doing all this testing on. It comes from a 10min recording so i had to render it out. It may take time to process into 4k for playback, I'm not sure if google drive modified the file at all if you download it. Assuming not.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WWDJRMrj2Ig482exK6CjXarxcKdnqi7v/view?usp=sharing

This is also the fastest yet I've seen it render that clip, along with the first time I've seen it use more than 10% gpu. Build 208 seems to have made a ever so slight improvement. I'm starting to wonder if I was on Vegas 20 before I updated to 21 315. I'm not sure all I know is I had the ability to use the AI Speech to text feature when it first launched and haven't updated since.

Render all second video about 2min 46 sec.
I don't see anything unusual for the presented video.

@FOVAirsoft About both.

Try disabling acceleration on the video tab. It might help.

"@FOVAirsoft Hi, can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Vegas version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments 👍"
Yeah ill fill that out, sorry I'm very new to forums.

"That's a screen grab, that's no good as a test sample."
This was just to show how the program locks up while rendering but playback is smooth at full quality, and that vegas will use the cpu and gpu properly during playback but refuse to do so while rendering. This was not to be a render test sample. Sorry about that.

Ill be honest, I don't see the purpose of providing render test samples. This is same video footage from the same gopro I've been using for countless smooth renders. Same settings in the gopro hero 10 ever since I got it on release in 2021 besides resolution. Around the end of 2022 I changed from 4k120 to 5.3k60 for smoother and quicker editing. Other than that no changes. I assure you its not the video files themselves. I can open the last project that rendered butter smooth just 2 weeks ago before I updated to 315 and that project is also now skipping, locking up, and low cpu and gpu loads. I'm confident my issue resides in Vegas itself. Some setting somewhere changed and I cant figure it out.

I want to express my experience with using Vegas to show my confidence on that last statement. I've used Vegas 12, 17, 19, 20, 21. 1080p, 4k120, and 5.3k 60. I've rendered with (cpu's) fx 6350, 6700k, 5900x, (gpu's) low end radeon i forgot, GTX 1070, 7900xt, (ram) 8gb, 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb. There was a span of time where for nearly 2 years I rendered a video every single weekend at 4k120. Vegas 17 would give me low cpu and gpu load problems here and there but it was always fixable. After this update 2 weeks ago this is the first time I've ever seen Vegas lock up like that during the render process as you can see in that video. I've dealt with the low cpu and gpu load issues numerous times but this time I cannot find a solution for that nor the lockups. Very frustrating. This is also the first time I've ever had to go to a forum out of desperation to fix my issue.

Any help or suggestions will be and are very much appreciated.

@FOVAirsoft my system specs are in my Signature below.

This is what I experienced with your clip. I did not create proxies for it, although initially, Vegas did since it was set to Auto in Options>Preferences>Video tab, "Automatically create video proxies for greater than 4k...".

During timeline playback, see screen shot #1. GPU is being almost exclusively used. In screen shot #2, again, GPU used almost 100% using AMD VCE going to 4K res. It took 1minute 4 seconds to render at 56fps during rendering.

I suggest you check your settings. I am using AMD driver 24.6.1
