Me Stupid...need help with font mystery

i am erikd wrote on 1/31/2019, 7:30 AM

Had big computer problems.

Decided fresh install of Windows was in order.

Backed up all my data...except MY FONTS!!

Ouch.

When I open Vegas veg files, of course the fonts are missing in my graphics.

My question is, is there anyway to discover what the original name of the font was that was missing?? If I had the name, I could go about recovering the fonts as needed.

I tried opening the veg files in wordpad to see if I could see any font information but I didn't see any.

Thank you.

Hi, looking in a .veg file I see something like this:

{\f0\fnil\fcharset238 Euro;}

near the text I added via legacy text. "Euro" here is the font name. May be you could do a search for your text in the Veg file, and look around it a bit if you find something that looks like a font name?

Hi Kit. I thought for sure your post would fix my problem. However, a search of the text looking for anything close to "char" yields zero hits. Searched "fnil" too whatever that may be. The Word Pad veg file must be 50 pages long so it is quite a slog. Of course I searched font too.

klt wrote on 1/31/2019, 7:58 AM

Hi, search for the string (or part of it) you entered. And when you found it, look around it a bit if you find something similar to what I showed.

I mean the string you show in the video. Say you have a title "hello world", you should search for "hello"...

Word pad and note pad won't search the veg files for some reason. In the pic you can clearly see the word angle but the search says no matches. Bizarre.

upload fail too for some reason....

Grab a copy of Total commander. https://www.ghisler.com/download.htm

Use it's builtin viewer, I'm confident you'll find what you look for.

i am erikd wrote on 1/31/2019, 9:19 AM

Thanks. I installed it and I have my veg file highlighted in red on the left hand side of the screen but I have no idea how to do anything else in this program or really what it does do.

klt wrote on 1/31/2019, 9:30 AM

Sorry, I grew up on Norton Commander then later DOS navigator in the good old DOS days. Such a tool is so much convenient and familiar to me that I can't even imagine it's new for someone. My bad.

Place the cursor on the file you want to do something with. Now it will be "view". Now press "F3" on the keyboard, or click the same button on the bottom. The "lister" loads the file. Press the number "3" on keyboard. That switches the lister to the hex view.

Press "F7" to bring up the "search for" dialog.

Enter the substring you want to search, then press enter. Press F3 for each subsequent search.

i am erikd wrote on 1/31/2019, 9:43 AM

Great directions and I was able to put it into hex mode. That said I can't find any text. I will create a simple .veg with only one graphic and look at it and see what Total Commander says. Thanks.

i am erikd wrote on 1/31/2019, 9:50 AM

So I did that. I created a new veg in 16 pro. Added 1 video track with one text media generator that said "Sample Text". Opened that in Total Commander and I searched and visually scanned but can't find the text. Can someone else recreate this? Can you see the text font in a simple one event veg file?

Please accept the following commentary with my profound desire to help you in the long run, not just with this situation.

I am ignorant. I'm blissfully ignorant in many areas of life and endeavor, but I'm not stupid. We're all ignorant about most things, but only some of us are stupid. I usually like to get my ignorance out in the open right away so we can all see what I don't know and attempt to learn what I need to know.

You've exposed your ignorance of basic system maintenance and you should learn how to create system image backups of your boot disk. Select a program like AOMEI Backupper or any other of your choice and start saving the image of your working system. Even if you decide later that it's time to wipe the whole drive and start over, you can always restore the old system image and use Vegas to determine which fonts you need to install when you put the new image back on the machine.

If you don't deploy a backup plan after this situation, then you're stupid.

@i am erikd Open the veg file in Windows Notepad. Then search for a single word of the text you had in the title. I made a veg file using the legacy text/title leaving the default 'Sample Text'. Then did a search on 'Sample' and this is part of the string showed up as "fcharset0 Arial;}} \viewkind4\uc1\pard\qc\b\fs144 Sample\par Text\par }". You see it clearly says 'Arial' font, which is what the default was.

The display in Notepad will look a bit different, but the results are the same. This forum will not allow me to post a screenshot at this time.

Hope this helps.....

Right Eagle Six! It works for Legacy Text. But all of my texts are what's called media generator texts! Very sadly, it doesn't look like it works in that situation. Huge problem for me.

john_dennis wrote on 1/31/2019, 11:13 AM

SWAG

Perhaps, you could share your Vegas project file minus the media. Someone else just might have some of the fonts available on their system.

It's a long shot.

For some reason my .png files won't upload. But my titles are specifically:

Video Media Generators: Vegas Titles and Texts.

If you right click on a timeline and choose "insert Text" you will get a media generator text.

So if it is not the legacy, you need regexp, because the string seems to be stored as widestring.

Here:

I show you how to regexp this search, because you need to match as char only every second byte.

So if your string is "Hello world" search for "Hello". But it will be H.e.l.l.o, because of the encoding.

Totalcommanders builtin viewer supports regexp. Then when you found your string, look around a bit, use your intuition and try to guess the fontname.

Eagle Six wrote on 1/31/2019, 11:54 AM

@i am erikd OK, using the Vegas Titles and Texts, I changed the font from Verdana to Times New Roman. Notepad will not perform a search on this the .veg file (or at least I cannot get it to), so to perform a search it will require a different tool. However, because this project was very small, I did find the reference of the font I used following 'f0' and here is a part of that string, so Times New Roman as f0 and the original default font Verdana as f1.

"{ \ r t f 1 \ a n s i \ a n s i c p g 1 2 5 2 \ d e f f 0 { \ f o n t t b l { \ f 0 \ f n i l \ f c h a r s e t 0   T i m e s   N e w   R o m a n ; } { \ f 1 \ f n i l \ f c h a r s e t 0   V e r d a n a ; } }"

Either a time consuming read of your .veg file, or find a tool that will provide a search, should solve the font mystery.

Hi @i am erikd

Your project has 24 Text Titles. The fonts that were used in it are as follows:

1. Haettenschweiler Font

2. Tahoma Font

3. Verdana Font

Install these three fonts so that they can be used again in your project.
