.MOV files audio coming in as loud static.

I am trying to import .mov files on Vegas Pro 15 (Build 361) (on Windows 10).  The video is fine, but the audio comes in as super loud static.  Sometimes very small portions of the audio is fine but the rest is super loud static.  The audio plays back fine in other software.  A different machine in our office has Vegas Pro 13 and the same files work fine there.  The audio codec is DVD LPCM Audio (lpcm).

I get that also on certain WAVs I've downloaded. Vegas has gotten more picky with audio file types, where all the other editors, all the other players simply play back these files just fine. I'm assuming its just all the crazy advanced audio stuff I have installed, but seems funny the only software affected by that is Vegas's audio.

Some parts of the static seem to be made up of other audio files as if Vegas is jumbling the sounds while it tracks it for PROJECT MEDIA. Just my uneducated guesswork there. Maybe clearing/resetting that cache would fix?

I'll resave them in REAPER as a new WAV or MP3 and they work fine. Just extra steps I don't recall needing back in 12 or 13.

"I'll resave them in REAPER as a new WAV or MP3"

Use WAV. MP3 is lossy and can fork up sync.

If there's no stereo content, (identical audio on both tracks) converting to a single channel mono WAV file will half the file size and lighten the processing load, especially if there are FX applied to the event or track.

Tech support responded to me. The issue was with the so4compoundplug.dll plug-in. I disabled that and restarted, then the QT plug-in kicked in and read the audio fine. In case anyone else has the same issue.

@jason-painter Thanks for the info and update. Do you know how that file was generated?

wwjd wrote on 6/6/2018, 8:27 AM

I've disabled my so4 dll, and pretty sure I still have QT, but will reinstall QT and see if that fixes mine too

[[MENTION:undefined]]Nick Hope - the file was a screen capture of an iPhone, captured using Quicktime.

[[MENTION:72427]] - from your description, I don't believe we are having the same issue.

ShaneJ had a similar issue reported here in VP15 build 361 with audio in MOV files recorded by his Kodak V550 digital camera, also solved by disabling so4compoundplug. Seems like there may be a new issue in build 361, with audio decoding in certain types of MOV file.

@jason-painter / @jepainter / @ShaneJ If you could guys share a sample (e.g. on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com) we could link the appropriate developer to it to take a look and try and get the issue fixed.

jason-painter wrote on 6/7/2018, 11:04 AM

All my footage is confidential stuff. But I can probably recreate something that will fail in the same way with something generic on the iphone.

jason-painter wrote on 6/7/2018, 1:47 PM

I created another file that has the same issue. You can find it here . . . https://www.dropbox.com/s/jn8np0f0p7w0k0y/so4compoundplug_issue_testfile.mov?dl=0

I am forwarding it on to tech support as well.

NickHope wrote on 6/8/2018, 12:32 AM

Thank you. I confirmed your issue in VP15 build 361. It's fine in VP14 build 270.

I'll link a developer to it directly, so please leave the file online for a few days so that they can pick it up.

You can solve this by either completely disabling so4compoundplug, or, if you want to retain native support in Vegas for iPhone videos etc., by changing the content of C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 15.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\so4compoundplug\so4_blacklist_vp15.xml to this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<filter_expr type="OR" comment="exclude IDR/I files where M = 1">
    <video Title="DJI.AVC" />
    <video Title="GoPro AVC" />
    <video Title="XiaoYi AVC " />
    <!-- Formats below added by user -->
    <video Title="Core Media Video" />
</filter_expr>

...and moving it to this folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 15.0\ and restarting Vegas. More details about this process in this post.

You'll need Quicktime for Windows installed for either option.
