MP4 Audio dragged timeline hiss then no sound, WM Player normal

Buystockinfun wrote on 12/4/2024, 12:35 PM

I recorded a video on my S24 ultra and it plays just fine on the phone as well as the Windows Media Player period but when I drag it from File Explorer to Vegas Pro 22 (Subscription), There is no audio except at the beginning of each MP4 audio file. There is a white box at the front portion of each audio file that is corrupted in some way. During that portion of the audio you can hear a loud hissing sound and then it stops and there's no audio. Most of the tracks have this white box although there is one or two that don't have the box but still make the sound. That white box appears to be a section where you can hear it and it correlates exactly with when the sound disappears it goes back to the regular looking portion of the track. The audio where you can actually hear normally does not have this box. This does not happen all the time only with certain videos.

There's a little more detail to this as I notice usually you can see the audio signature on the track until you play it and then all of a sudden there's a loud and then the audio disappears and there's just a flat line and no sound except at the beginning the hiss. It's almost like it's allows the play until the noise hits a certain amount of time at MAX dB, then hiding the deformity. But the audio is perfectly fine being played anywhere else. Interestingly this time I imported a bunch of tracks and about ¾’s of them have no audio signature. And you can hear the audio in the other 25%. Same device same recording time basically.

This started happening only with Vegas pro 22 and it doesn't happen with most of the MP4’s, Just certain ones and it's random. I haven't changed any audio settings in between or anything. It's like there's some kind of software glitch. I'd prefer not to reset everything because that's a real pain but i heard that might be one solution. I'd like to dig deeper and find the actual problem. Removing the import and doing it again doesn't work opening a new instance of Vegas Pro doesn't work.

Ignore Media Offline as the cause as if I click play it goes back online. Might be a symptom because usually my Media Timeline doesn't say that in production. But it keeps going back to that after playing. Very troubling.

You should be able to see the pics, I did it the way you suggest.

Also the bad files properties. This MP4 works on every other device (5 others Ive tried it on and that chimp stuff from MS to make movies (it is free vs vegas so what gives with vegas?)

Vegas is having a hard time figuring out the audio on this file...what we need is a MediaInfo readout on this or for you to provide a copy of a piece of media which is exhibiting the problems you are seeing.

Buystockinfun wrote on 12/5/2024, 4:46 PM

I am unsure what a MediaInfo readout is. From googling its another program or App. I own Vegas Pro 22 not anything else or an add on. Can you describe the path to this? There is only a sound of the train alert no talking, others have talking. But Vegas should have no problem "hearing" this vs converting it to garbled sound. Some of the same video has the same sound and work but not this and some others. Thanks

I can't find a way to record in 480P with Samsung camera app, are you using a different app?

@Former user @Buystockinfun, yep same here, bad sound on the one with AMR audio, the other FHD clip with AAC LC audio plays without problems,

In this case, I was sending short messages as I sat at this train to my sister, and it only allows so much data so rather than try to share short Hi def videos that fail to send, I record hem in the message app. So its Samsung Msg's that records it through the camera at 480. This train company is always blocking the intersection more than 15 minutes so I am compiling all the videos for the authorities into one. Its been an ongoing problem with them that needs addressed and so I am trying to showcase it. Its a unique circumstance. Though I wonder if you are onto something with the video being poorer quality. Though as far as Ive ever seen it has no problem typically creating a project with 480 or 720 and having high res and eventually making even 4k though I dont think in any real way the 4k is upscaled, but it has always worked with whatever quality you have.

I've never researched my next comment, but I recall one time I had to really bring up the dB on a project to hear something in the background and if I went too high it would actually automatically mute it somehow. Because if I went too high the background noise a bunch of like pops and things that you could hear in the recording caused it to somehow block the audio. I thought maybe it's something like that with this but there's no background noise really like that in here to cause a block if there is even is such a thing in Vegas. Granted the original video does not have a high dB, I've had plenty of video with silence and it didn't have this kind of issue.

The other time I had this happen and it happens sometimes but not very often, I used that Microsoft chimp thing or whatever it is to create a movie with the exact same file and then that file worked in Vegas. That was my work around. But I don't want to have to do that I don't want to have to go to a third party or to convert my video when it already is and MP4 and all the other MP fours on this phone 99% of the time work. I'm curious why you think converting it as you mentioned in your comments will solve the problem? I'd rather figure out what's going on maybe it'll help somebody else so that people don't have to like do all these third party work arounds and special things. The software is expensive enough that it should work properly and not do this and I haven't changed anything as far as settings. I've been doing projects for three months without any problems since I had the last problem and all of a sudden it just randomly popped up again. I'll have to research this Shutter Encoder. I'm not in a rush for the project but it just doesn't fit my brain to like do a work around unless I have a rush deal that I gotta finish before I can solve it or when there's no solution. So I'm gonna file your comment in the workaround part of this troubleshooting.  Thanks

  • Fix your past recordings with instructions in this epic.*

Shutter Encoder? Epic.*? Well it looks like it worked. But why would I have to do this anyway with Vegas. All of the videos were with the same setting/method. It works in Vegas with some, why not all? Does not compute.....So ideally wouldn't finding the underlying problem 1st be best unless pressed for time? I mean if the issue is 480 4:3 then what good is VP? Not everyone is trying for an Academy Award. That being said so it's nice to know a workaround. I am confused about what you refer to epic.* and tell me why and what about Shutter Encoder from your experience. Why is it needed in VP anyway X something like this (that IMO shouldn't be happening).

I wouldn't use Sony VP to try to get an Academy Award. In this case, I was sending short messages as I sat at this train to my sister, and it only allows so much data so rather than try to share short Hi-def videos that fail to send, I record them in the message app. So its Samsung Msg's that records it through the camera at 480. Just compiling the shots because this train company is a years, every day offender going back and forth blocking a3 lane highway (in each direction) for 30-45 minutes. They are limited to 15 min by law, so it needs addressed. I put Sony for the fun of it. Like on airplane forums they show an accident and everyone hates it when someone puts, "you can't park there."

Buystockinfun wrote on 12/28/2024, 10:48 AM

So Vegas Support is telling me to try to use a 3rd party movie maker to see if there is an issue. That's a fine troubleshooting step but I hope their and everyone else's suggestion to use other software is not supposed to be the answer. There is a problem with Vegas that need fixed. You may not like my video quality or whatever but bugs in software effect everyone somehow someday and so it needs researched and fixed. Hopefully they will do that with this instead of blowing it off. Here is the message I sent to the regarding their suggestion I try another program to make the project (lol).

The audio Issue disappears if I use Movie Maker or put the files on my phone and create a new movie by combining the two example clips. Again the original clips work on my phone and all mp4 viewers BESIDES Vegas. I create a dropbox with all the files and a .veg project with both the old and new file in it. The project begins with the new combined video that now has the audio for the entire section and then I include the original that had the problem as well as the original that did not after that. As you can hear the new project which I increased the volume on so you could hear it a little more accurately since it was a faint sound works fine with both videos. On separate video and audio tracks you can hear the problem MP4 track with the loud hissing sound.

Here is an oddity that happened when I created this. I dragged the good track in Vegas and it worked just fine. Then i dragged the faulty track into Vegas and had the same problem but I could still hear the good track that I created. Since the volume was so high on the first tracks for the newly created video, I decided to move the old videos to a new set of tracks. When I got done and I pressed play I could no longer hear the first good track there was no audio for that track even though it was set at 12, but I could still hear the loud hiss for the old video as well as the train dinging in the subsequent original tract that always has worked. For some reason the audio disappeared on my new track after I moved the originals to new positions in the project. So I'm prepared to redo just the new track on a separate project so that you could see the difference. This was weird that my audio suddenly disappeared by Moving the original tracks to new tracks. I made no adjustments to any audio settings or any volume on my computer or the Vegas software. I opened Vegas back up and everything worked again so the disappearing audio issue wasn't there when I reopened it. This tells me there's some kind of glitch in Vegas when I did this and I don't know how you would ever reduplicate it but it's something to think about.

For some reason I have noticed that when there's static on the video Vegas will do this sometimes. There is no static in this video on the original form it's just a faint dinging sound of a train but perhaps Vegas translates this and shuts off the audio? But why it shut off the audio only for that and now leaves this obnoxious hiss that isn't even there does not make sense to me. Also you're having me fix a problem with Vegas by using somebody else's software which I appreciate the troubleshooting step but I certainly hope that's not the answer to this. That sounds like you somebody else's software because we can't figure out what's wrong with ours. Everything else works with this original video except for Vegas so that tells me that there's a problem with Vegas. You have all the files you should be able to figure out what the problem is with your engineers. I don't know if I can do any more to help you troubleshoot this. We know the following:

1. The  original video works on all platforms but Vegas.

2. The original video does not have a kiss except for in Vegas.

3. I can use other software and successfully create movies.

4. The new video works on all platforms but Vegas one time when I moved the problematic videos within the project to a new track and then the video suddenly wasn't there until reopening Vegas.

5. Sometimes Vegas mutes a track or a whole video sort of randomly when there's static on the line except it's not doing it for this original video. It has done that to me in the past when I have increased audio db to hear voices but there was wind noise for example.

6. Right now I'm having to use third party software to fix a problem in Vegas that is not present with any other software.

7. Vegas can't figure out what is causing this and they need to figure that out because there are other people that have had this problem as well and it needs solved.

Thanks for the source files. The short story is that VEGAS Pro 22.194 doesn't recognize the audio:

  Raw stream: 1
  Audio stream: 0
  Codec name: 'Unknown'
  Codec fourcc: 0000000000 error
  Data rate: 128,000 (bytes/sec)   =1,024 Kbps (calc.)
  Text data rate: '16000 kb/s'

Whereas MediaInfo says it's a rather non-standard one (but other players work with it):

Audio
ID                             : 2
Format                         : AMR
Format/Info                    : Adaptive Multi-Rate
Format profile                 : Narrow band
Codec ID                       : samr
Duration                       : 27 s 200 ms
Bit rate mode                  : Variable
Bit rate                       : 12.8 kb/s
Channel(s)                     : 1 channel
Sampling rate                  : 8 000 Hz
Bit depth                      : 13 bits
Stream size                    : 42.5 KiB (0%)
Title                          : SoundHandle
Writing library                :
Language                       : English
Encoded date                   : 2024-12-03 00:24:30 UTC
Tagged date                    : 2024-12-03 00:24:30 UTC

Keep checking back to see if VEGAS fixes it but in the meantime you have multiple viable workarounds- either capture in a different way or convert with ShutterEncoder to a format VEGAS supports today.

@Buystockinfun FYI the audio of your video is also NOT accepted in Davinci Resolve, another professional NLE...

Cant open .3gp in V8 Link: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/cant-open-3gp-in-v8--59760/#ca333452

There seems to be decade-long lack of interest on the part of VCS in supporting low precision audio codecs used primarily in the telecom industry. Searching for "AMR" (Link:) produced very few people who had expressed a need to edit them. The usual answer from video editor peers is to use an external converter to convert the media to a form more often used in the video editing craft and get on with your project and your life.
