Multi camera editing question

John-Callahan wrote on 1/9/2026, 3:35 AM

I have been working with multi camera editing for about a week now. It works really well to switch between which camera (take) to use. However, if I find the interval between takes are too short or too long and I want to change it, I find it very difficult and time consuming to fix it. That is because I cannot remove any of the take change markers. I can only change the take in the area between marks. So, in order to change the duration between takes (shorter or longer) I have to do something like:

  • In the area to change, set all takes to one camera
  • Go through that range in timeline and set new markers with new change of take
  • This gets the multi camera timeline messy with extra markers. For instance the initial settings:
    • Timeline in frames, set take change over 250 frames
      • Camera 1 =  0-250 (new marker at 250), switch to Camera 2
      • Camera 2 =  251-500 (new marker at 500), switch to Camera 1
      • Camera 1 =  501-750 (new marker at 750), switch to Camera 2
      • Camera 2 =  751-1000 (new marker at 1000), switch to Camera 1
      • Camera 1 =  1001-1250 (new marker at 1250), switch to Camera 2
      • etc...
    • Decide to make time between cameras to 400 frames
      • Between frames 0 to 1251 select clips and set take to Camera 1
      • Camera 1 =  0-250 (old marker at 250)
      • Camera 1 =  251-400 (new marker at 400), switch to Camera 2
      • Camera 2 =  401-500 (old marker at 500)
      • Camera 2 =  501-750 (old marker at 750)
      • Camera 2 =  751-800 (new marker at 800), switch to Camera 1
      • Camera 1 =  801-1000 (old marker at 1000)
      • Camera 1 =  1001-1200 (new marker at 1200), switch to Camera 2
      • Camera 2 =  1251-1500 (old marker at 1500)
      • etc...

I have found no way to remove the original take change points on the timeline other than undo. However, this means I have to use undo all the way back to the point I want change. Also, if I open a project where I want to change it, then undo will no longer be possible.

If there is a easy way to solve this I would like to know. Or, if there is a object method I can using in a C# script then I can try that. However, I do not see anything obvious in ScriptPortal.Vegas which I can use to remove these transitions.

The duration of the fade between cameras is controlled by the Cut to Overlap setting in Editing Preferences. I also set the alignment to Before Cut using the start of a peak in the audio waveform as a guide. Working with music performances, I always stop and replay after each cut and use ctrl-Z to undo and then redo it if it doesn't look and sound right.

@Howard-Vigorita - I think you are missing my point. I made two screen grabs of the timeline for 2 clips set as a multicamera clips:

Multicamera take switch at 250 frame interval

Change the take switch to 400 frame interval (does the job, but looks messy)

My only recourse to change the interval between take switch is to either CTRL+Z all the way back to the start and start over, or in the case where the project was saved and on reopening it I need to change the interval. I cannot find a way to remove the old take switch marker, so instead I have to change the takes along the timeline AND add new take switches to get the desired 400 frame interval.

For my real editing I don't fix the switch points to exactly at a specific interval and instead review both tracks in multicamera editing to find the point I want to switch it to. However, after spending a lot of time doing this I may find that on playing back the timeline that I feel I may be switching too often or spend too much time on one take and then want to go back and re-think my take points. So, unless I start from scratch, I then have to doing some edits as mentioned above. I would much prefer a context option or C# script where I can do the following:

  • Select region of clips to remove take switches
  • Edit option or script would change the take to the first instance clip to all of the rest
  • Then remove all of the take switch markers

If it cannot be done via some context menu option or via a script, then I will just have to be more certain about choosing the take switch points.

What if you select everything after the first event and delete them. Then extend that first event to fill up the area you just deleted. Then you're back to a single event ready to cut again?

@jetdv (Edward) - I am not sure what you mean. If I have two video clips, joined as a multicamera timeline and make several multicamera edit switches I cannot delete anything on the timeline other than the entire clip itself. Maybe you need to explain the steps in an example?

As I said in the e-mail, I haven't used the Multi-Cam feature built into VEGAS. Based on the screenshot, it appears there's multiple events on the track and the splits are "in the wrong place". So, just by looking at the track, it appears you could delete all events after the first one and then extend the first one to the end and add new splits.

@John-Callahan using the downloaded project, here's what I did as a test:

  1. Add a marker at the end of the project
  2. Select all events AFTER the first one
  3. Press "U" to ungroup and then "Delete" to delete them
  4. Then extend that remaining event back to the marker

Then you can go to Tools, Multi-cam, Enable Multi-cam Editing and you can edit again adding NEW cuts/dissolves with the previous ones totally gone.
