Whats so bewildering about 4K multicam in Vegas OldSmoke?
I work with, edit and output 4K content in Vegas for Broadcast on a regular basis.
I have no issues whatsoever!... Once you are an experienced Vegas user and knows
what you are doing, there's NO issue at all.
My only regret right now is the 4K resolution limit, i wish it presently had at least
an 8k resolution limit.

How can it benefit Sony to make it open source rather than just leave it be?

Maybe we need to crowd-source the funds to buy the rights to the code.

@Steve

You must have a hyper machine to be able to handle 4K multicam editing unless you are working with proxies. Please let me know your system specs so I can build my own.

Don't bother with the Sarcasm OldSmoke. You are not speaking to an amateur here.
One doesn't specifically need a hyper machine, its also implementing a very smart
workflow!

Use the Red Hat model, provide support for a fee? Unfortunately, as bad as their support has been I don't think anyone will pay.

So, please share your workflow. I am working in multicam for the past 5 years and even 1080 60p is a pain in a 5 cam shot. Unless, you are working with proxies.

Good point, but if I were to take on a 4k multicam project, I would seriously consider using proxies. Almost all 4k production that I'm aware of in Hollywood gets edited with proxies, one reason is that Avid makes this so painless, and it helps to always have assistant editors who do all the grunt work, but even in the old days of SD and HDCam, proxie files were (and continue to be) the norm.

Of course, I would like to edit natively like I generally can and have done up to this point, but Vegas seems to have made the proxie process pretty painless. 4k multicam seems to be pushing the envelope pretty hard, although I look forward to the day I can accomplish that with my mid level hardware (on whatever software allows me to do this).

@ddm

Sure, proxies are an option and I use them. However, making proxies for a 5 cam shoot with each camera having over 2 hrs of video is no fun and time consuming.

Have you considered producing those proxies in real time during production? Pro gear generally has functions like this to get this done.

>>>Have you considered producing those proxies in real time during production?

This is starting to become a regular workflow for the 4k shows I've worked on. The Sony F55 records XAVC 4k and XDCam HD on the same sXs card. The last multicam sitcom I worked on for ABC actually never went to the 4k masters and just used the proxie files for delivery, but they have the 4k files on the shelf for when they want to deliver 4k. Smart move.

Oh man, those recent glassdoor.com comments from employees really tells a sad tragic story. Should we start an online petition to "Keep Vegas Alive"??
VMP wrote on 5/1/2016, 6:06 PM

Has any online petition ever work?

:-) just wondering.

In these type of situations the only number that count is $$$ generation.
That's probably what the investors wanna see.

Well, I wish Sony sell at least Vegas Pro to a better company who will take care, and develop Vegas Pro .. maybe the original developer of Vegas Pro, The Sonic Foundry, or even better to Blackmagic Design who's is doing amazing development with Resolve. Blackmagic Design also is extremely solid financially, so they can very easily afford buying and developing Vegas Pro.

A petition may at least bring awareness to people who are in a position to take over development of SCS software - it's amazing how some opportunities fly under the radar until it is too late.
