Need help finding a way to change a preference...

antony-vickers wrote on 5/25/2018, 3:04 AM

I have a 250GB SSD that serves as my boot drive, and a 6TB HDD to serve as storage for most everything else (like my projects).

So right now, I'm trying to make a 6 1/2 hour long video that'll be an estimated 111GB size file. Unfortunately, right now, my SDD only has about 96GB of space on there, and I've been finding that the temp file is constantly getting created in AppData\Local\Temp folder on my C: drive.

I've tried changing my video output to a folder in my F: drive, the 6TB HDD, but Vegas constantly want to put the growing temp file in the Temp folder.

Could someone please tell me how I can change my settings so the file is created entirely in my F: drive?

It's not really clear from this what you have changed here, but the parameter to change is the 'Temporary files folder' at the bottom of 'Tools/Preferences/General'.

I have had my temp folder directed to the E drive for quite some time without it ever reverting back to the C drive.

In my Vegas, the Preferences is in Options, but I have already tried to change the folder with no luck. Even when setting the "Temporary files folder" back to default, to AppData\Vegas Pro\15.0, the rendering file is still constantly going towards the AppData\Temp folder.

I'm currently on version 261, since this is an older project I started on that version, and when I tried upgrading to 361, it had the most bizarre glitch where all the audio, even in the media bin, was out of sync with the video. I'll try upgrading to 361 again, but I'll have to redownload the installer since my current one says that one of the .cab files is corrupt and keeps rolling back the installation.

There are a few temp folder options in Vegas. Be sure you are changing the correct one.

FILE>PROPERTIES has one for audio and one for video

OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>GENERAL has another one.

I wrote that the temp files folder is under Tools/Preferences/General. This in fact should be Options/Preferences/General. My apologies for the error.

I also have File/Properties/Video successfully directed to the E drive for the pre-rendered files folder.

In your latest post, you mention that the rendering file is going to the AppData/Temp folder. A rendered file is quite different to temp files, the latter being the type of file you raised on your original post. If you are referring to rendering via the Render As window, then the bottom of the Render As window has a folder selection field where you can direct the render to the folder of your choice, usually via the Browse button. The Tools/Render to New Track also provides a destination choice.

The Tools/Selectively Prerender Video option will direct the render to the folder that you have selected under File/Properties/Video for prerendered files.

I have File/Properties for both Video & Audio set up for F:\Vegas Renders, same with pointing my Temporary Files Folder there.

When I start the render, the empty video file is created in Vegas Renders. But still, I get a "File" file created in AppData\Local\Temp that Vegas Pro creates. Now, I can understand that this is essentially like a .PART file, that is where the data of the render is going, whereupon it will automatically disappear upon completion with the data going to the video file in Vegas Renders.

This is still happening, and I don't know how to set this essentially-.PART file to Vegas Renders, so it doesn't eat up more than the free space in C:.

Which codec are you using to render?

I remember that a while back rendering using prores codec create a temp file in your windows temp folder. If I recall well, this should have been fixed.

Try changing the TEMP environmental variable to your large drive. To be certain, you may do the same with a TMP variable. This is what I have and have no problem with Vegas’ temporary files:

Of course, it has to be point to an existing directory.

Let's see... looks like it's MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4, with a Custom Template

This worked, changing this Windows option to a Folder in F: made it so the this PART file would be created and get data off of my C: drive, but this felt like a nuclear option. I wish this was something I could solve withing Vegas Pro without having to change stuff around in Windows.

I'll mark your comment as a solution, but I hope that someone can figure out a way to alter this in Vegas proper.

It was discussed here and fixed for MAGIX ProRes and Intel HEVC renders in VP15 build 244. It's a pity it wasn't also fixed for MAGIX AVC/AAC, which still writes a temp file (with a name such as "skeo", "s3v4" or "s94c") to the C:\user\"name"\appdata\local\temp\ folder (unless you do Red Prince's workaround).

I tried Sony AVC, MainConcept AVC, and MainConcept MPEG-2 renders. They all write directly to the final file and don't create a temp file.

Please report this so it gets into the developers' backlog: https://support2.magix.com/customer/en/vegas/form

In the mean time, I’m glad it helped.

This issue is fixed in VEGAS Pro 16 Update 2 (build 307).

"The render destination folder is now used for temporary file creation during the render process to avoid inadvertently filling up the user's C: drive."
