...Windows 7 hasn't reached end of life

According to many websites I checked the other day (and just checked again), mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in January 2015. Extended support continues until 14 January 2020 which apparently means that Microsoft is only addressing security threats in W7 until that date. If you exclude security updates, that does tend to imply that Windows 7 has reached end-of-life.

See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet

Note that mainstream support for Windows 8.1 ends in about 5 weeks time.

"The 'native' HFP plugins for Vegas are part of HitFilm 'Ignite'. Apparently, Ignite was part of HFP2017 but is no longer sold with HFP6. Hence, none of your HFP6 effects will show up in VP15, even though 'right-click' integration works."

Actually the seven native HitFilm plug-ins of Vegas Pro (Bleach Bypass, Light Flares, Scan Lines, Three Strip Colors, TV Damage, Vibrance and Withness Protection) are part of – Vegas Pro. They are still available on my system together with HitFilm Pro 6.

But there seems to be an issue where the license of Ignite Pro 2 interferes with the license of the native Vegas Pro HitFilm plug-ins. If the demo of Ignite Pro 2 is installed it seems to lock the VP HitFilm plug-ins. If you either uninstall or license Ignite Pro 2, them are unlocked again (you may need to re-install Ignite Pro 2017 after having uninstalled Ignite Pro 2 to also get the many Ignite plug-ins (not the native ones) back).

That link led me to a 404 page. If Microsoft are providing security updates then I don't consider Windows 7 end of life. I can still buy Windows 7 machines at my local computer shop but Windows 8 has fallen by the wayside, that should say something about the wisdom of accommodating Windows 7 support.

AVsupport wrote on 12/3/2017, 2:38 PM

Also, @Kit-As-Was, if you want better, faster, safer code in newer software, this code needs to make use of features only found in newer OS's. This is a little like new codecs like XAVC-S or HEVC being smarter and more efficient. But these rely on contemporary infrastructure, hard and software. Eventually you will run out of luck if you want to go there without updating your system. Re security concerns, I'm sure you can control how your machine talks to the internet. You can also turn certain windows features off. Plus you get regular antimalware updates with W10. Do you with 7? How many win7 security vulnerabilities have not been addressed since support ran out a few years ago?

And @Marco. thanks for pointing that out, could you check please: Is 'Vibrance' still accessible from within VP15 when you have IP2 installed? I currently have HF6 and Ignite Express [edit: add: 2017] installed, which still shows all the old HF plugins. I'd hate to loose it to the external editor after all that...

Extended support means security vulnerabilities are still addressed. It just means Microsoft won't be adding more bloat and won't offer support unless you have a specific agreement. Wikepidia puts the current usage (by browser) of Windows 7 at 48.43% compared to 27.99% for Windows 10 and that's despite Microsoft's force migration tactics. It is possible to use O&O ShutUp 10 to curb Windows 10 but it's a running battle and the forced bundled updates are onerous. Windows 10 is like a pig wearing lipstick. It's a mess.

I'm surprised that Windows 7 is still in the lead.

I'm more surprised that companies like Hitfilm have dropped support for Windows 7. I mean it's not like XP which according to your chart has a larger share than Windows 8 and Vista combined! I suppose if you combine Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 they lead by over 7% but a share of 42.83% is hardly to be sniffed at even by a pig.

If you'd install and license Ignite Pro 2 then "Vibrance" would be accessable twice, once in the native HitFilm FX version of Vegas Pro and once in the Ignite plug-in version.

In regards to Windows 7 support, as a developer, I would love to give up support of Windows 7 (as it puts a strain on QA and makes life difficult for those of us working on UI), but as our marketing group continues to tell us, a huge number of existing users, and even new users, are installing our software still on Windows 7. The same dilemma existed with the widely popular Windows XP.

I'm not sure what how other software companies evaluate OS support, but as a general rule a lot of places will support the current version and one version previous. The unfortunate reception of Windows Vista and Windows 8 have made that sort of policy very difficult.

AVsupport wrote on 12/4/2017, 2:45 PM

..which kinda brings us back to the OP, thinking that my request to have HFP6 working with the previous Version of Vegas 14, shouldn't be unreasonable, since most software companies give at least 12 months update support. VP15 is only a few months old, and I would believe there's still a large number of users on the previous version [I wanted to stay too this time around until my benefits are more substantial].

Team Magix fixed HFP6 integration. Thanks guys, you're awesome.

Obviously, I can't expect Magix to integrate HFP6 on VP14. This ship has sailed.

And Hitfilm wants to sell Beta Puppets.

All This leads to frustration in my book, leaves the customer stranded like a beached whale being snorted on by pigs with lipsticks.

Again, I would urge the suppliers to not put short term gain ahead of long term sustainable relationships with their customers. /end rant.

Here's a quick summary of key facts I've learned from my multi-page conversation with the helpful Hitfilm staff:

- Hitfilm2017 and IgnitePro2017 is no longer available. There's no free 'downgrade' during the 30-day 'free upgrade' grace period 'because it's no longer available in the shop'.

- Hitfilm6 is not compatible with VP14, even so the product says so (this is a known 'inaccuracy').

- Ignite Pro 2 is no longer sold With Hitfilm6, as 2017 did, even so the product manual says so an there is no specific mention of this on their website (this is a known 'inaccuracy')

- The Dancing Puppet is not a beta, it is a full version. What is a BETA is Action Pro V0.2 which sells for $99.

- Hitfilm is not interested in making HFP6 installers compatible with both V14 And VP15 (like HFP2017 was)

- Since Ignite is no longer part of HitfilmPro, there's no need to have IngitePro2 as being part of the Thanksgiving Special.

- According to staff, Even though last year's Thanksgiving upgrade price for HFP2017 (which came with IP2017) was $189, this year's $199 HFP6 special(which is now standalone) release is considered cheaper, but apparently you're better off purchasing the $497 Studio version (which thankfully contains the $99 Beta)

Merry Xmas everyone.

Just an extremely small test ... the new Ignite does work in VP14. PiP works in VP14, and adding the puppet FX opens a grid pattern which suggests that it probably works in VP14 also, though I've not had any time to play with it.
