Optimal Settings

Can anyone tell me how I might tweak my settings for smoothest performance while editing? I have an Intel Xeon E5, 32 gig ram and 64bit Win10 Pro.

I just bought an Osmo Pocket and editing the 4k video is REALLY laggy, I mean, I can work with it, but even previewing on the lowest setting is still really choppy.

Try making a proxy file, that should make it better. Also make sure your preview settings match your media.

Turning the timeline thumbnails off in the options menu makes a world of difference.

Hardware decoding might help if you have a good GPU. Go into preferences, under file i/o, and see which decoder is selected, or if one is selected. Decode acceleration puts decoding the clip on your GPU, so your CPU is free to do other things, and that can dramatically increase playback speeds when editing h264 or HEVC files (the only 2 formats GPUs can currently decode).
