Organizing the Project Media List

Amivideotek wrote on 5/3/2020, 3:02 PM

Hello,

I try to sort my entire list of used images, different categories of videos, sounds, texts, graphic elements and so on, which I use in a project.
In Vegas pro there are a lot of ways to do this.
But I'm looking for a way where I can divide a whole list (1) of items into different folders (2), and once they've been dragged into a particular subfolder (2) which I made and gave a name , then they must disappear from the entire list (1) with items. It's kind of a move of items. If all items are divided into subfolders (2), the entire list (1) must be empty.
And If I still use new media in this project, all these items will automatically appear again in the entire list (1), I can immediately see these in the entire list (1) and can quickly place it in a particular submap (2).
Greetings Alain Milants

As the name says the main list is the entire list of all imported media. You can create as many sub folders as needed, also a sub folder where you import first all newly added media before sorting them to the other sub folders.

Amivideotek wrote on 5/4/2020, 12:29 AM

If I could have added several subfolders in the Project Media > Media By Type, I could have placed all my media in a specific folder.
Now only Audio, Video and Stills subfolders are available.
This is a simple solution for my ask!

You can create as many subfolders as you want, just by right clicking "Custom bins".

Amivideotek wrote on 5/4/2020, 2:32 AM

I understand that, but when I add new items to my project, I'll have to look them up one by one in the "All Media" list and place them in the Custom Bins!
I'm looking for a way where I MOVE items from a main-list to a sub-list, and I don't need to look these new items back in the "All Media" list, but in a main-list where the items that were already placed in a sub-list are no longer visible!

Create a "Main List' folder and add everything to it. Then when you move items to your sub lists from this folder they they will disappear from it.

3POINT wrote on 5/4/2020, 3:17 AM

That's what I also told Eric. @Amivideotek thinks that all new media has to be imported into the main bin first, before sorting them over to sub bins.

When I Add items to the timeline, they go automatically to the "All Media" list, and not to the Created "Main List" from EricLNZ.

You must search the new items into the "All Media" list and move they to the Created "Main List" from EricLNZ and/or to the sub-list!

That's only when you add and import media to your timeline from the Explorer tab. When you first import your media into the Project Media tab, you can import the media first to any sub bin you created before. Of course this imported media will also show up in the ALL MEDIA bin.

Hello 3Point,

I always dragged my media straight from the Window Browser to the timeline.
Now I drag from the Window Browser first to a created folder (example All) in the Custom Bins and from there to a specific folder (example Photo).
And indeed that's how it works! I will have to adapt my method of working!
Thank you very much this helps me a lot.

Greetings Alain

I kind of got forced into using custom bins because other camera folks I often shoot with bring cameras that number all their clips starting with 00000.mts and I might end up with a project with 3 to 5 clips in my all-media list all with the same clip names. I obviously have to put them into different disk directories but also putting them into separate matching custom bins in Vegas helps preserve my sanity. Wouldn't it be nice if I could just grab a disk folder, it would save so much time, drop it into project media, or even onto the time line, and Vegas makes the bin, same name as on disk... Sung to the tune of the Beach Boys.

I tried but it didn't work! You can always request it for in VP18 or in Vegasaur.

Maybe this can helps : Before I begin in Vegas Pro I use "Advanced Renamer" and give my clips a specific name, and with Vegasaur you can arrange the order of your Custom Bin-folders.

I also rename clips before importing, according this rule: date number, clips names look like this 2020-05-06 001 and so on. Every new date the numbering starts at 001. So you will never have a clip with the same name and they are easy recognized by the number.

I would prefer an option in the media tab to filter the clips, on date, type, name etc.
