musicvid, I find myself in an odd position. I'm a close to retirement senior citizen with a teenage daughter.

As a former contemporary hits DJ back in the day, I started doing live DJ stuff for the kids a couple of years back, and expanded out to the occasional wedding, pool parties and the like. I've found myself hooked on a lot of the contemporary music, and I guess I look a little strange to folks my age when at traffic lights I'm bopping along to "Hot Hights 100.9" . For crying out loud, I even liked some Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers tunes my daughter liked. I listen from Dion and the Belmonts to Flo Rida and all the spectrum inbetween.

It's fun DJing with the Beyonce, Kesha, Katy Perry tunes and the like today - keeps me young. Anything but hard core rap I can deal with. I like a lot of the hip-hop and dubstep tunes the kids like. The ultimate compliment came from one of my daughter's friends last year - "Man, you're pretty cool for an old dude". I mix in a lot of old tunes as well. It's amazing how much the kids eat up some of the 90s dance stuff. I even get requests for stuff back in the 70s from time to time from them.

Anyhow, I digress. I enjoyed the halftime show, especially since the end result was the total burnout of half the stadium's power! I wouldn't call it my favorite of all time, but it was fun, although a bit over the top at times.

I wonder if The Who could pull it off again . . . . . . just saying.

Yeah Dave, the pole (and dance) in your viewing area could have obscured the view of your TV !

And, these "modern star" type songs - can anybody remember the melody/tune/etc the next day ? Or even immediately after for that matter ? Let alone in 20 years time ....

I always dreamed of a Pink Floyd halftime show. Players coming back on the field, "Coach, I don't wanna hit those guys anymore. Can we just watch the light show?"

RE the power outage.
The power was out for 34 minutes.
The Ravens won with a score of 34
Coincidence? You tell me :)
(roll the spooky music)

atom12, that's great!

I agree about a lot of the songs lyrics being totally immemorable, but most dance tunes are about the beat.

I bet Katy Perry's "Firework" will be one big exception to the not memorable rule. There are some very good, clever lyrics and well produced tunes out there amongst the garbage.

Mike, you must be in the "moon landing on a sound stage at Universal" camp :-)

plasmavideo, I'm no "conspiracy theorist". I used that line on my buddy who was cheering for the 49ers. He got a chuckle out of it.

You're right, though - that does sound a bit spooky.

Prob'ly an age thing, as someone upstream already mentioned, but...
I found the Beyonce extravaganza very boring. She's beautiful and all, but the songs are pure formula, and I do hate that editing style that prohibits having any one camera angle last for more than three seconds. Sure prevents anything approaching intimacy. (But I admit that intimacy & SuperBowl don't go together, anyway.)
I'm very impressed with Beyonce when I see her interviewed; lovely, articulate and intelligent. But her performances, usually all leather and military-pornish, leave me fully offturned. I'm not in her target audience anyway, so no matter...

Not my cup of tea is being very curtious. No melody, screaming notes, no music, could not understand the words, could not understand the lyrics, excessive use of teenage flashing lights every 1/4 second, burlesque coreagraphations, and pink noise would have sounded better. All in all it was awful. The power failure happened at the wrong time.

"The audio mix for the whole event was all over the place."

I gave up watching, only the eye candy kept me watching for as long as I did.

CBS are not alone but why?

Maybe they just "take a feed from the desk" ?
As we know what can sound great when fed into a venue might not sound great at all anywhere else. Surely though for an event like this there's enough money to do everything right...or maybe it's just all too hard to have a mix for the venue and another for the OB.

Watched the first 3 minutes, then muted the set and talked to friends about what was wrong with the 49ers.

And people wonder why so many countries hate western "culture." It ain't culture if it's tasteless.

There were many questionable calls (or lack thereof) affecting both sides. On the positive side, the refs let the teams play football. There have been regular season games that I've turned off because the refs were calling every theoretical misdemeanor to the point that it became about the refs rather than the game. Other than the halftime show and a few of the commercials, I liked it.

The 49ers had the entire first half to show up but didn't. A superior team does not have to blame the refs - they win it decisively.

I hope there's no penalty for taking an OT off topic...

And remember that with the cornerbacks hand on the back of the receiver and the receivers hand pushing on the gut of the cornerback that this one yard separation is considered "wide open" in the NFL.

Taste in entertainment, like food, is highly subjective. Having come from years in the production side of concerts, I found it entertaining. I don't have to like the music to appreciate what all went into the production and performance. I am not a sports fan and didn't watch the game, so I'm not at all qualified to comment on the game itself.
PeterWright wrote on 2/4/2013, 8:12 PM
I've always wondered ...

1) Why they call it football, when only one player ever kicks the ball, then immediately goes off for a rest.
2) Why all the players don't get fitter so they can play continuously for more than half a minute.

- just stirring from abroad ;)

A lot of legs, no doubt. The problem was there was too much emphasis on the razzle dazzle to use a football term. The overhead shots were nice, but everything else was cluttered as was the style of music. Surely not enough shots of the band who are the biggest part of the music. And it was way too long....

And what's with all the armour, silly shoulders, crash-helmets. etc ? And touchdowns where they don't even touch it down ?!!

Check out Rugby Union (or League) for a real game ;-)

BORRRRRRING, nothing even close to worthwhile to me apart from a bit of well implemented tech and a couple interesting shots, but lame factor was definitely fairly high.

Beyonce and the stomping of the '49s? How on Earth could that be lame?? Loved the spectacle of it all.

American Football is an Icon. It reveals everything that is monumental about the US: Guts, Finesse, swiftness of foot, strategic intelligence, all served up with a major tongue in cheek quality that redefines the ironic.

Now, OTOH . . . . Rugby Union - my game - is the pure, naked, virile pursuit of the impossible task through a game that basically goes backwards to get through the Game line. Presently "The Six Nations" is riveting, with this last weekend's opening has to have been the best ever curtain-raiser.

Lame and Boring? - I really must be missing something . . . . . . ?

Grazie

>>>>Taste in entertainment, like food, is highly subjective.<<<<

Yes if you are discussing something like penne arrabiata vs. penne ala Genovese.

But when it's a discussion about eating $hit ( listening to Beyonce, Madonna, most rap ) vs real food ( to be more current I'll go with Florence + the machine ).

It's not subjective at all.
