It just worked. She is superhuman.
My personal all-time top five as of today.:
1. Beyonce
2. U2
3. Prince (tie)
4. Stones (tie)
5. Michael
Honorable Mention: Springsteen, Sir Paul
What was with the cold angry looks on B and the other dancers/singers throughout the performance? Maybe it went with the lyrics, but since i could not understand them.... Also, was there more than one song? It all sounded the same.
That cold, angry rapper look is what turns me off to the live performances. The football player (and other sports) profile headshots are often the same. Maybe it's a reflection of how they perceive the world, or as usual, it's all show. . . .whatever.
On the other hand (here we go with another round of opinions), what did you think of Alicia Keys National Anthem. Too slow, and not enough "proudly we wave" pride for me, but otherwise I found it refreshingly nice. A local morning radio show here was 'dissing her for not standing while she played the piano, and commented that it wasn't contemporary enough. Sounded kinda like they wanted Lady Gaga to sing it with Eminem talking trash in the background.
She has some hauntingly beautiful songs on some of her albums. Too bad some of the producers corrupt her with trashy material as well - the same thing that happened to Mariah Carey, in my humble opinion.
Face it -- People usually attend concert events for visual entertainment; they go to coffee houses to listen to singers.
Subjective responses are what they are -- individual, and based on any number to things, including how one felt when they got up that day. Qualitative judgments are based on a set of informed criteria, so one may appreciate the quality of Beyonce's vocals and choreography without necessarily liking the music. That's what makes one critique stand out over another; I may not agree with Peter Travers' movie reviews every time, but he uses a more refined set of criteria than I do. So his review are qualitatively better than mine, yet hardly meet the test of objectivity.
So all I am saying is that one can admire and even feel inspired by a performance, without necessarily liking the content. CBS' handling of the content delivery was arguably mediocre.
I can tell the difference between somebody who can sing/play/write and somebody who relies on hype and image to manipulate 12 year olds into buying their CDs/ songs from iTunes even though they can't even sing. Being able to hit high notes doesn't make you a singer.
"Being able to hit high notes doesn't make you a singer."
No, but not being able to hit them (think Miley Cyrus) means you don't have the technique to be a singer.
"Nothing subjective about it."
Now who's using hype to try to manipulate?
Why would I think Miley Cyrus, that's just white Beyonce.
A good singer knows his/her range.
You could have used examples of people like Bob Dylan and Roger Waters. Range of 1/2 octave, but they have that certain timbre, they know what to do with what they have and most important of all they have something to say.
It's all a part of it. JUST SINGING ALL IN CAPS means nothing. That's why they need all the fireworks and 100 people on stage, otherwise even 12 year olds would go WTF is this?
Add Bob Marley to those two. Another example of how you can sound great without having any vocal range whatsoever. Sorry I can't think of any favorite female singers like that. All of my favorites do have almost ridiculous ranges, but they know what to do with it.
"Why would I think Miley Cyrus, that's just white Beyonce."
Proves my point about criteria.
Why would you equate Dylan and Waters in the same sentence? Dylan was a poet. And I wouldn't dream that Dylan would have ever considered playing a Super Bowl! Waters was (and is) a consummate musician and composer.
My opinions of Beyonce's half time show are 100% subjective. They couldn't be anything else, even if there was a consensus agreement. My qualitative observations about her show are based on criteria acquired during 40+ years as a trained musician, performer, director, and live event producer. And I never once said I liked the songs, did you notice?? Why not just admit that your opinions are 100% subjective too?
After reading this stuff here I finally decided to watch at least part of it. I have it in HD on my antenna DVR.
Anyway, after watching part of it I turned it off and said BORING! LOL!!!
Does CBS know what an audio mixer is? And if they do, do they know how to use one? That has got to be the poorest audio mix I ever heard!
When one thinks about it, the performance might have been great if the audio was not so poorly done. Apparently CBS does not understand the value that audio brings to a performance! They were so focused on the video side that they completely forgot the audio side!
Even for those who like this sort of whatever you call it (LOL!) CBS completely ruined it in their inability to do audio properly!
after reading all this stuff....good bad ugly,, I was interested in the game not the halftime...but ,,the mix is bad etc....think about the setup time,, and breakdown...now thats pretty amazing and has to be considered on when talking about a bad mix and whatever....come on man
Beyonce's need to save face after the inauguration lip-sync and sing live was the cause of the majority of the mix problems, and it's easy to see why given the complexity of the show. Ever since 9/11 the NFL prefers that EVERYTHING is prerecorded (at the Superdome, I know from experience that the vast majority of the national anthems are) to avoid any spontaneous political remarks or controversy from these rock n' roll hooligans.
The viewing audience rarely knows the difference when the halftime shows aren't lip synced and they sound better on the air. Even with U2 and the Who, all the click tracks for the music, many of the instrumental parts and the segues between songs were sequenced to allow no spare moment for anyone to make an impromptu statement.
Subjectively, I find it downright hilarious that all this criticism is being leveled at the halftime show considering that the entire Super Bowl is a massively hyped, essentially pointless, entertainment spectacle. I thought Beyonce's part fit quite nicely into the overall ridiculousness of the entire event.
pointless for those who don't care for sports, like acadamy awards are pointless for those who dont like movies , baseball is pointless ..... well you may be able to get it
I didn't say that there was anything wrong with pointless, but it's not curing cancer or bringing about world peace. It's entertainment and a way for a group of people to make a boatload of money by putting on a spectacle, not that there's anything inherently wrong with that either.
Listen to us - we've become our parents! Sounds like some of the same thing dad said about, and we argued about, my Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane LPs (not to mention the mindless pop 45s from the mid 60s). LPs, you remember those, don't you?
My grandad almost threw me out of his house once for playing Ricky Nelson and Elvis on the radio.
