Most of what the company I work for produces doesn't requre thousands of dollars worth of encription keys, it just has to work in the device for which it is meant.

So? What's wrong with AVCHD? No "encription keys" needed. No $20 disks. No Blu-Ray burner. What is the issue? I have tested the AVCHD disks I have created in every single player I have encountered at my local Circuit City (it's the closest electronics store). They have worked fine in all of them.

Terje, that quote isn't from Fargo, it's from "The Cowboy Way" with Keifer Southerland and Woody Harrelson.
"Knock off it's horns, smack it on the ass, and set it right here...."
Good call!

Terje, I mostly focused on Science/engineering but view film/video as tools for a specific tasks, ie docus,...etc, but over the many years, I have observed there are a small percent of individuals driven to walk into busy traffic, shoot themselves playing with loaded weapons, beat up old ladies because they can, etc, that fall outside of the explanation "SH** happens!" for the rest of the the world---------- some individuals need that emotional rush of being against the system or logic or just kissing MS hairy butt that there must been super glue used on those lips. ;-)

Wow! Nice rant there Terje! (Well, to be honest I kind of got bored after the 3rd or 4th sentence and skipped the rest).... but I'm sure what ever you said is the gospel truth! I've come to learn that everything you say is both factual and correct so I never second guess!

You now have me convinced. I WANT blu ray to win! I too want to be able to stand in line for the opportunity to pay those stupidly high prices for outdated machines. I'm sure those prices will come down... heck it's only been 2 years now and they're almost in line with dvd!
I WANT my next generation format to be known as a game console format (and that noise problem.... I'm sure Sony will correct that... they'll just charge extra for the earplugs as they do for the remote).
Heavans... and the avchd... I think its MUCH better to spend hours reencoding my m2t's over to avchd... I mean why worry about such a small thing like quality loss... it's just a non issue!
So they made a mistake and rushed their unfinished product to market. Shame on HD DVD for making them do that. Toshiba should have had the decency to hold back for another year since that was what bd claimed they needed. It matters not that the year they claimed was up about a year ago and they're STILL pumping out yesterday's machine.
Yes... I'm convinced.... blu ray is the way to go!! RAH RAH blu ray..... please... rip me off too!!

You just don't get it do ya... I have as much conviction in HD DVD as... well.... Spot does in BD. It's a complete, market-ready, cheap technology that has the potential to give the public good hi def NOW at good prices.
Is HD DVD in a tough place right now?
No doubt
Is there a possibility that they may lose this?
Sure
Has it always been an uphill battle for them?
Yup, the deck is stacked and has been from the start.
Am I tired of this war?
Yup. There are days that I just wish it was over so we can start enjoying it
Has any of this changed my mind?
NOPE... not one stinking bit. I believe in the technology and I will stand behind it until the last chip is played. It's good technology, it's effective technology, it's cheap technology, and it's technology that is here now instead of on the drawing board still. It's pretty easy to stand behind and back the winning track... but I don't care... until I see a technology from Sony that matches that of the consumer's actual needs... it WILL NOT get my vote.

And BTW: you need to get this anger problem with Microsoft under control!!

NEWS FLASH! The format war is over! That's right, IT'S OVER! And guess what? Blu-Ray won, EXACTLY when I said it would. And the defection of Paramount had EXACTLY as little effect as I said it would.

There is no "may lose this war," there is only "it has already lost."

It's not boredom blink, it is called religious fanaticism. The problem for you is that your religion doesn't jive with reality. and when someone points out to you that your absurd faith is proven wrong, you "skip the rest". I really do feel a lot of sympathy for you.

and that noise problem

This is a good example. No matter how many demonstrations you get, you can't stop lying about this. Do you really feel that lying is a good debate technique blink? I have proven to you, given you the video even, that a non-fault PS3 makes no noise whatsoever. You keep harping on the noise issue though. I really think you do believe that it is noisy, your religious fanaticism won't allow you not to. No matter what the reality is.

Is HD DVD in a tough place right now?

No, it is not. It's dead.

Has any of this changed my mind?

Very few religious fanatics can change their mind. The problem is that you can't argue logic with a religious fanatic, logic simply isn't part of you guys' capability. Not in general mind you, but within the domain of your religious beliefs. This is why you have such strange things that (very rarely, but still) there are physics professors that are deeply religious within one of the more popular monotheistic religions in the world today. As a religious person it is not a problem for them to keep two completely contradictory views at the same time.

And BTW: you need to get this anger problem with Microsoft under control!!

You are projecting blink. Badly. I have only ever stated that Microsoft is at least every bit as bad as Sony when it comes to DRM, nothing more. Your projection is typical though. You see the world, as does most religious fanatics, as a place filled with good and evil, us the decent people and them the bad guys. You can't fathom that others don't. When you say "Sony DRM is bad" and someone replies "How is it worse than what MS does in the DRM space", you read that as you stating the truth and the respondent attacking MS for no reason whatsoever.

Now, blink, you might see this as an attack on your person. It isn't. I am only commenting on your behavior in this discussion. I have read a lot of what you write, and it is coherent, well thought out and good. As with the religiously fanatic physics professor though, you have compartmentalized your life, as we all do, and in the deeply religious compartments there is no logic. This is one of your deeply religious compartments.

As I have said before, the longer this goes on, the less chance of a quick ending.

Even if one format calls it quits, they (or someone) will still make movies available for quite a while in the deceased format because there are hundreds of thousands (guessing #s) of each player out there.

I say, let there be both formats, I don't see why there has to be just one.

Here is a business idea/legal question: Would it be okay to take BD only releases and copy a backup to HD-DVD format on a 3XDVD. Then sell the backup copy with the original BD disc (say through Ebay). I can get about 100 mins. of good HD on a disc, compression becomes a factor after that, so it is possible.

This format war is stupid, the Internet is the format. VOD is the future. How we store it is the question. I want to download a movies and have temporary storage if rented or burn it if I buy it. I decide the format as long as I have space on the media.

This whole one side or the other is evil is stupid, they are corporations that are protecting assests and both will do whatever they can get away with legally.

Jef9329, go directly to the penalty box and pay 25,000$! You must want to become the MPAA PosterBoy! The mere fact that you are copying cross two different formats then selling the org-- using protected media will push a lot of people buttons in legal circles. I don't want to be too big of a jerk, but that question should have never been posted on an open forum. With the RIAA and MPAA legal "hit" squads being more knowledge about editing forums, autbots scanning for keywords and phrases are more common.

Answers as follows; Legally-no, ethically-no, but I want to---- fill in the blank check here. Just remember, the very reasons why you think this will work in the market also moves you directly to the front line of mostly likely to get the famous letters, so selling on EBAY--- no!.

Terje,

What are you using to author your AVCHD discs? The most advanced authoring I can find is Ulead and it is crud. I can't even turn off highlights I'm not using on its awful templates. I'm willing to be enlightened, as we are obviously going to be losing a revenue stream in the near future.
