"Sorry Apit, we will ALWAYS have more Mosquitoes, and our Winters will ALWAYS be colder... you just can't win on those things. :)" you forgot black flies----its like being in a SCI Horror film when they "spring to life"! You have a lot of beautiful country.

Blink, in a sign of international friendship, I though I would help clarify a few phrases;

"more Mosquitoes,"------"noisy X360's as they burn up"

" Winters will ALWAYS be colder"-----"HD DVD addon to X360 burned down our warm, beautiful home and we now live in a cave shared with polar bears"

"you just can't win on those things" ------- "the polar bears eat children"

"Your just jealous"-------- "my Ex was eaten by an nice 1400lb polar bear and yours wasn't------ unfortunately, the nice polar bear dead of food poisoning, very sad day"

"lot of beautiful country"-------"PS3 populates all the local homes" ;-)

The Xbox 360 is LOUD too, no doubt about that.... and I have just as much interest in that game console as I do the PS3.... neither one of them will EVER be in my living room! I was more or less FORCED into getting the Xbox for my son for Xmas... Okay, fine it's downstairs in his tv room... But now he wants a 5.1 surround system for it. I told him it would be a cold day in He$$. The last thing I need is to hear that dam thing through the floor!

And Polar bears eating kids.... listen... there are times when that looks like a blessing in disguise.... kids cost money..... LOTS of it! :)

Found it!

For those interested in a STAND ALONE PLAYER,
You have to do your home work carefully because the BD players (particularly the audio) is all over the map. One machine can handle the audio completely differently from another. This should help a little:

This list however does not cover playable video types and disk types.... that's another ball game.

And Polar bears eating kids

Pity there weren't any polar bears around when you were a kid blink, the world would have been a better place.

Still with the personal attacks eh.... and this one without even a reason.

People have told us both that they are tired of reading this and they are asking us to grow up... are you not hearing?

And BTW... that "debate" we had a while back about BD machines not being able to be updated... it has been confirmed by the BDA... they CAN't be updated.

My input:
I have a BD 300. Love it. Just had to update the software so it would play AVCHD and desktop burned BD discs, but otherwise, it's been a joy/workhorse.
I have a PS3. Love it too. I don't play games, but it's useful for other things (Folding, for one). It's not noisy. There was a batch of noisy PS3s when they first shipped, one bad apple does not a whole barrel make.
Just got a Pioneer BD player for the office to test discs on. Works great, but it's noisy compared to the BD300 and the PS3.

Spot,

I'm pretty sure but let me ask this just to confirm.

My main concern is good picture and GREAT sound. How does the BD300 stack up? I think the sound is just as important as the picture and I would rather not skimp in that area... the profile 2 and such I can live without.

So the BD300 finally plays burned BD discs! That is good news. I know it plays AVCHD discs burned on DVD+-Rs quite well too. Lots of options is a good thing.

I think I've pretty much made up my mind anyway. I was aiming at the Panasonic bd30, but I think I will hold off for the bd50 coming out. It APPEARS to be a fairly complete player and it will do truehd and will internally decode dts-ma. (my AVR has hdmi but it is not is not the newer 1.3 version, so I can use the 5.1 outs with internal decoding for full dts-ma) I haven't heard a price on it yet but I don't think it should be TOO high.

Just hope it's quiet. Turn down the sound and you can hear the BD30.
AFAIC, the BD300 is the best of the bunch. you can hear the fan on boot, and then it gets quiet. As far as the sound quality goes, it's as good as my system will allow it to be. Which is pretty good. :-)
