Photo editing <-> Vegas workflow

Video_flaneur wrote on 11/20/2017, 11:42 PM

I would be interested to learn from the more experienced of you out there how you handle your workflow when it comes to interspersing still photos with moving video in Vegas.

A photo editor such as Photoshop is going to have more sophisticated still image manipulation options than Vegas. On the other hand, things like colour matching stills with videos are best done in Vegas.

In my case I use Affinity Photo rather than Photoshop, and have VP15 with Vegasaur and a number of other add-ons.

What workflow works for you when incorporating mixing still images with video in Vegas?

I'm a Newbie to AF for iOS and PC and am liking it muchly. Getting my Stills back and forth I use WAAG's OpenStillsInGraphicEditor script. Once a Still image Event is selected in VP I hit the script and firstly it makes a TAKE and then opens my Graphic Editor. I do my Graphic adjustments, Save, Exit and get returned to VP with the new altered Graphic shining forth!

That's the mechanical workflow. As to CC and so on, I adjust in VP. But I'm not retentive as where I do the adjustments so long as it is compliant with the rest of the Video, or is purposefully screwed-up by me!

Google does mention about 100 WAAGs. I wonder which one it is?

Grazie, what is  AF for iOS and PC?

What is it? Remarkable! - Affinity Photo from SERIF - a British Firm - Non-Subscription graphics editor for either iMac/iOS ( MACs, iPads and Air Pads) and also Windows. I have a AF for both my Win7 machine and my iPad - sorted!

Oh yeah, I bought both together for less than £50.00.

Did I mention it is non-subscription?

I did also a new Google-search:
Perhaps Wayne Waag - but the links in the thread to "Open Stills In Graphic Editor script" are all broken.

Here is a current link to the scripts that Graham mentioned.

They will work only on V14 or V15. Let me know if there is any interest for users of earlier (Sony) versions.

Please advise of any problems.

Dear wwaag!

Many thanks for your quick and friendly response! 👍

I copied the files in C:\ProgramData\VEGAS Pro\Application Extensions.
I also copied the files in:
"C:\Users\username\Documents\Vegas Application Extensions" and
"C:\Users\usernam\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\Application Extensions

I restarted Vegas as admin, but nothing appears in VP15 (Build216).

Please, do you have some notes on installation and use?

Addition: The png's may be corrupt ??

marc-s wrote on 11/21/2017, 4:41 PM

I do all my photo editing in either Lightroom or Capture one then export as either png or jpeg for Vegas. Once I edit them into a Vegas timeline, I add motion as desired and then apply the levels filter to each photo (or track) and choose the preset "computer RGB to Studio RGB". This is because most video (though not all which is why you want to learn how to use scopes) is studio RGB (16-235) and photos will come in as computer RGB (0-255). I then tweak the settings of the levels and or any other color correction to taste.

Do you still have the script for Vegas 13 and where can I download it? That's what I'm still using until MAGIX sorts out the performance issues of VP15.

wwaag wrote on 11/21/2017, 7:20 PM

@walter-1 & Cliff Etzel

Sorry. These are simply compiled scripts. They should be copied to your script menu folder. E.g. in V15, it would be "C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 15.0\Script Menu". Once loaded, first open the config settings script which tells the script which editor to use and which option for saving back to the timeline. AFAIK the png files are not corrupt--they've worked just fine for years.

Cliff. Here is the link to the Sony Version which should work from v8-v13.

Unfortunately it does not work.
See screenshots - any Idea?

I have moved the files as suggested to folder:

I restarted computer and opened Vegas as admin
I click on "Settings..."

This appears:

Hopefully, someone find my mistake!

Hi Walter,

Something is definitely wrong with the files that you have placed in the script menus folder. The sizes for each of the 4 files is nearly 321 kb and the date appears to be the current one. Here is a screen shot of the way it should look. Note the size of each file is much smaller and the dates are from awhile back. Suggest that you erase from files, download the originals once again, and then copy directly into the script menu folder. Do not change the png files in Irfanview. In fact, the png files are really not needed. They just provide a nice icon to be seen with each script if placed on the toolbar.

Try the following : for both dll files, right clik on it, --->Properties and you should have at the bottom of the window a security warning : "This file came from another computer etc... " if so, click on "Unblock".

Dear wwaag!

Many thanks für your Information - so I could more easily find my mistake.

Yesterday I downloaded the files from dropbox by right click on the files and "safe target as" - and the files grows to 321 kb.

Today I tried the "download Button" - the funktion created a Zip-file - after unzipping the files - they had the right size.

Now the script works as expected - also the png's are totally correct.

Many thanks for your help and your patience.

I am very happy with the script - life has become more easier again !! 😊😊😊

@ Grazie - many thanks for establishing the connection !!! 👍👍👍

Thanks, jwe, for your suggestion - I tried this also- but there is no warning.
I found the solution - see my entry above.

My dumb question---why only png files?

"My dumb question---why only png files?"

The referenced png files were only for the script icons. Inside the script itself, the only limitations are the graphic formats that Vegas will decode and what the editor supports. One feature of this script is that it also supports camera raw formats in addition to the usual jpg, png, bmp, psd, etc.formats.

Dear wwaag ... many thanks for providing a link to download your script. I found your script to work far better than the one that comes with Vegasaur Toolkit! Your script made my life a lot easier .. so thank you again!

The only downside was the script's dark icon as it was very hard to see in the new dark interface of Vegas Pro 15. Because of that, I created a new brighter icon for my own use. You can see it here in the screenshot.

If you like it, please feel free use it, share it, and even include it with your script.

Since OP has Vegasaur, I will describe how one can use it to work with external graphics programs.

Vegasaur has External Editors tool, which you can use to open the selected media file in an external editor. For example, it can be a graphics editor or an audio editor for sounds. User can configure it for his own needs.

For example, select a PSD file and open it in Adobe Photoshop directly from the timeline, with a single click! Just register (add to the list) your favorite graphics editor, specify file extensions and you're done!

You can specify a number of different applications for the same file extensions. In this case you will be prompted to choose which editor should open the file:

So, if you want to configure external editors - make sure that no events are selected on the timeline and run the command. If you want to open a file in external editor - select this media file on the timeline and run the command.

Important: This tool works in conjunction with Auto Offline tool.

Unlike the standard option Close media files when not the active application (in Preferences), Auto Offline tool automatically closes only certain types of files, for example, only images (large video files are not closed). Less annoying delays when switching between Vegas and other applications.
