I think this is a minor bug.

I don’t. I think it is there deliberately because Magix assumes we all are running a pirated copy of Vegas. It happens to me occasionally because I tend to use Vegas with my Internet access turned off. And Magix goes ballistic when it cannot connect to its servers when you start Vegas. At first it says nothing, eventually, after you have run Vegas without an Internet connection for an unspecified number of times, it pops up this message, and only pops up it when you want to save your work. That’s just evil! It should pop it up when you load Vegas, not wait for you working on a project and finally trying to save it. Almost like their attitude is, guilty until proven innocent.

Anyway, quitting Vegas, turning on the connection to the Internet, then starting Vegas while the computer is fully connected has always fixed it for me. At least until the next time I start Vegas with no Internet connection several times in a row.

All of this makes me worried. Some day, Magix will perhaps no longer be around. And all of our projects will cease to work. Not a good attitude. If they want to be so paranoid, they should give us a USB dongle instead of forcing us to be connected to the Internet.

I was checking the new build without an internet connection and was building a big project of all kind of files and nested vegs on my desktop trying to trigger that (former?) "minor bug".
That test project has already grown to more than 7 hours, I had patience enough with so many files and nested vegs not be too hasty.
All no problem for me and my desktop as you can see on my screencapture that was also running to give people like you some proof 😄

I run Vegas Pro 16, build 307 (latest at this point), and with Vega's own sample production video (the nice promo piece), and after rendering, my time line still freezes and yields that error. I've been encouraged by Mathias' desire to track (by asking for specifics), and I thought I supplied it - but I haven't heard back yet. While this seems to be a serious bug (huge henderance to productivity), it may be computer specific, hence my posting of this thread to see if others have experienced the same). I do still have the time-line freeze and error warning after rendering, even with Magix' own beautifully produed timeline promotion demo. But, as J-V just mentioned, I'm sure this is not internet connection related.

@Carl-G

Thank you for reminding me at your OP, because I still can trigger it that way. So probably it still exists.
It does not affect me much because I never play back a project that I have rendered before.

Here is screenvideo of this bug that is always there in the situation I show here

Personally I have never suffered this issue before. I just did exactly as j-v's video, using the new VP16 build 352, and still did not suffer this problem.

To isolate the cause it would help for others to do exactly the same test that j-v showed (the project is in C:\ProgramData\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro\16.0\SampleProject ) and then to report:

  • Suffered issue or not
  • Operating system and version
  • VEGAS Pro version and build
  • Which encoding method was used (hardware or not)
  • Which media player is used
  • Internet connected or not
  • Audio device type (in Audio Device preferences)
  • Status of "Close media files when not the active application" (in general preferences)

For me:

  • No problem
  • Windows 10 Pro version 1511 (i.e. AN OLD VERSION)
  • VEGAS Pro 16 build 352
  • CPU only (I can't do hardware encoding on this PC)
  • Windows Films & TV media player
  • Internet connected
  • Audio device type: M-Track Quad ASIO Driver
  • "Close media files when not the active application" is enabled
j-v wrote on 12/21/2018, 2:40 AM

@NickHope

I tried all your variables and only when I switch my used audio driver to the one here showed the nasty pop-up comes not, that one is installed by Magiix Soundforge Audio 12.
The other ones all seem to trigger that behaviour whathever I change in the other settings you mentioned.

In about one our I change this message with the settings on my laptop where I cannot trigger it (untill now😉)

On laptop I have the same audio drivers as on desktop. It makes no difference which one I use and also when I switch to other options. Never the bug will pop-up.
Maybe it is the configuration of my setup on the desktop where I connect the main monitor on which the Vegas UI on the NVidia GPU and that PC starts up (BIOS) on the other monitor I use for previewing. When that one is switched on than I can use the Magix AVC QSV renderoption and the NVENC renderoption. When that monitor is switched off I cannot use QSV when Vegas Pro 16 is started without it. To use it real and not only seeing it I have to restart Vegas with that monitor switched on.

Last changed by j-v on 12/21/2018, 7:55 AM, changed a total of 2 times.

I was checking the new build without an internet connection and [...snip...] no problem for me

So? Anecdotal evidence means something is nonsense?

As I said, it only happens after running Vegas without an Internet connection an unspecified number of times in a row. Nothing to do with how complex your project or how many hours you were working on it.

Every time you start Vegas, it tries to call Magix servers to verify it is registered for the particular device you are running it on. If it is not able to connect, it does nothing the first however many times (Magix admitted to that on this very forum before, so how is it nonsense?). But after some unknown (to us) number of times it happens, it pops up that message and refuses to save your work and also to render.

The problem disappears the next time you start Vegas with an Internet connection. It connects to Magix servers successfully, verifies the device, and resets the counter, so, once again, you can run Vegas without an Internet connection for the unspecified number of times.

How do I know? Because it has happened to me. I started panicking when it did, turned on the Internet to get to this forum and ask what to do, and suddenly my Vegas worked like a charm. For about a week (because I only connect my computer to the Internet when I need to, not automatically), then after a while the message popped up. I already knew why, so I turned on my router and Vegas was happy once again.

Issues related to requiring the PC to be online (ref) were reported more often in the days of VP14 and reports have decreased since. So if your issues are indeed caused by the PC not being online, it's possible that would not happen in later versions. But I don't believe any fixes in that regard, if there were any, were ever publicly documented. It's also worth pointing out that the symptoms being reported by some with regard to VP14 were not the same as this "Playback not enabled for this device" symptom.

Red Prince wrote on 12/23/2018, 11:06 AM

And yet, the message I got was exactly the Playback not enabled for this device. I am, of course, not claiming that is the only reason for that message (how would I know?), but restarting with the Internet on fixed it for me every time.

NickHope wrote on 12/23/2018, 11:57 AM

To clarify, the typical message back then that some users were getting, and that was presumed to be due to being offline, was "There is no license to use this software".

Red Prince wrote on 12/23/2018, 12:59 PM

I believe you. Nick. But I never got the no-license message, I always got the playback-not-enabled message. In both, v14 and v15. And turning on the Internet was the solution.

this has happened to me on version 15 and on earlier Movie Edit programs. Oddly my solution was to stay on the internet also...actually have a YouTube window open, but mimized. Or...I'd leave my audio DAW open but minimized. That always corrected it. If I got the error message, I could either get on the internet or open up my audio DAW and it seemed to flush out the problem...whatever it was. Earlier, it seems a windows update fixed it, but this last build (1069 I think?) brought it back. It doesn't always happen either.

I recently ran into this "playback not enabled for this device" problem with VEGAS Pro 16. This problem started to occur when I replaced my LCD monitor. In the past, I had never had this problem regardless of the VEGAS version/build. Searching the net, I tried suggestions from various threads but they were unfortunately only temporary fix. Finally, the solution worked for me was to update the driver for my USB audio interface (Steinberg UR242).

Try also check your WinOS Sound Driver as well.

Happened to me many years ago, and after I recheck WinOS Driver, the problem fixed

@Chas-S You can try allowing Vegas access to the microphone in your Windows Settings. You know, laptops always come with a microphone device.

I've found this trick before, and if you don't give Vegas mic permission after rendering, this error will appear. I wonder why the program is designed that way.

Using VEGAS Pro 22 build 248 & VEGAS Pro 21 build 208.
