Preview lagging in Vegas 19 365 but not in Vegas Pro 18

Stephen-Goldberg wrote on 2/14/2022, 2:48 PM

I am working on a project with clips from multiple cams. The large size files playback OK in the preview window. The files from a GoPro with H265 encoding lag terribly. There are 1080p files not 4K. Yet they play fine in Vegas 18 and Vegas 17. I prefer editing in the latest version of Vegas but cannot proceed. I thought it was my new video card but they play fine in older versions. Before contacting support I am posting here. I checked my version of Vegas 19 and it is up to date..My system is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz   3.19 GHz. My GPU is GPU AMD Radeon RX 6600 8GB

@Stephen-Goldberg You can try turning on Enable Legacy HEVC see if that helps

I've found that unchecking the legacy hevc decoding box yields higher performance. Render quality is better with it enabled, however. Maybe it's unchecked in your v18 settings.

I checked that and it is enabled in both Vegas 17 and 18 abd the files play fine in those versions. The lag is only in 19. I will have to do the edit in 18 as I cannot postpone the job but crazy that I should have this issue in the latest version only

It isn't normal. Consider resetting 19 if you can't find another fix (hold control and shift on startup).

@Stephen-Goldberg Consider getting this, annoyingly you've got to pay but it's cheap & if you have a PayPal account it's easy, it's cheap enough to try even if t doesn't help,

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/hevc-video-extensions/9nmzlz57r3t7#activetab=pivot:overviewtab

& in my picture that keeps getting quoted, i only had Enable Legacy AVC ticked, you did click the one below HEVC? (just had to ask 😏)

@Stephen-Goldberg There's another for HEIF, it's free so wouldn't do any harm to inc it

@Stephen-Goldberg There's a tool called MediaInfo, download it, it's free https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading, right click on the media in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the View option, select all, copy & paste in a comment here, do this with both, the one that plays well & the one that doesn't.

I have the exact same problem. I have Pro 19 on a windows 11 PC - I-9 9900K - Radeon R9 390 8gb - 6 cameras - most 4k 30 fps but I set each camera to 1080 30fps before importing into the multi cam project. Pro 19 immediately goes to like 3 fps when previewing and editing is impossible like that. I imported that same cams back into a Vegas 17 project and it will play for many secs at a reasonable fps in the 20s allowing me to edit. I matched 19 settings with 17 settings and it was still unusable. Using 17 now since I have a project deadline. Most Vegas releases have improved preview slightly - 19 seems to have gotten much worse! What in the world?

@Darren-Pyle What settings?

What is your media, this is about HEVC, are your files HEVC?

Give enough info so people can try to replicate your problem to confirm or dismiss. When you are seeing 4fps do you also see the GPU decoder overloading like in this video?

Btw the first half is default settings,2nd half is legacy AVC decoder
