Problem with Sony Vegas Timeline Playback

xavier wrote on 4/25/2017, 11:55 PM

Hello, this is my first post on here. I searched the forum and found nothing related, so I'll ask.
I still use Sony Vegas Pro 10 (I know), as I've not had enough reason to upgrade it.

Recently, when I fire it up and edit for a few minutes, it stops playing clips on the timeline from the point I play it.
The timeline indicator jumps 5 seconds ahead, from wherever I play it, and has a preview display delay of 4 - 5 seconds (consistently). Even when I click the Play from Start button.

If I shut down Vegas and restart it, it works fine for about 3 to 4 minutes and begins doing this again.

I had used it fine for over 6 years with 3G of RAM on the computer, and now 6G of RAM. It is running on a Windows 7 desktop. I don't think it's a memory issue. I have updated the graphics card driver, but it still happens.

Has anyone come across this before? Could it be a setting? Thanks.

Updating the graphics driver might make it worse. What GPU do you have and what driver version?

What type of media on your timeline and how was it created?

There are lots of tips on smooth preview here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-make-my-video-preview-play-smoothly-in-vegas-pro--104624/ Something there might help, although the problem you describe sounds different.

Thanks, Nick.

I updated the graphics driver yesterday, but it made no difference. It said it was successfully updated, although the date in the dxdiag still shows 2010.

I have ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics
The driver version is 8.733.0.0, although it shows a 2010 date.

The issue happens regardless of what I have on the timeline. It could be audio only or different video formats.
I read the linked FAQ, but they either don't apply, or I've tried them already to no end.

Did you already play with the amount of Dynamic Ram Preview Max ( from 0 till 200 MB).

You find that setting at Options/Preferences/Video.

@Cornico

Yes, I played around with that before, although not down to zero. However, as it was mentioned in @NickHope's FAQ, I took another look at it yesterday.

What I observed is as I reduced it gradually, it would eliminate the issue for a few minutes (just like restarting Vegas). However, it returns. Another reduction would temp fix it again etc, till I got to zero.

So, it is related to that, but since it's at zero and still doing it, I'm still trying to figure it out.

I suggest next you reset VEGAS Pro to default settings.

If that doesn't work, I suggest doing a clean uninstall and reinstall of Vegas Pro 10 next. Instructions for Windows 7 are here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/scs-help-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall-instructions-for-windows-7--105493/

I recently wrote these instructions for Magix Vegas Pro versions. They go a bit further than the old Sony instructions, including deleting your Vegas temp files folder and also registry cleaning. So if you want to be really thorough, you could include those steps too.

Alright, @NickHope, thanks for your suggestions.
I will attempt to delete temp files for now, to see if that clears it out a bit.

Is Windows set to automatically update? Did it do an update recently, before the problems started?

xavier wrote on 4/28/2017, 12:10 PM

No, I have automatic updates turned off, and only update manually. Mainly because it significantly slows down my system. No updates around or after the problem.

It's a weird thing. In playing around with the Dynamic Ram Preview Max, I noticed any change I make to it, in any direction fixes it for a few minutes.

If I move it from 0 to 50 it stops doing it for some minutes, and returns. If I move it up to 51, same thing.
If I move it down to 49, same thing. So, any little change - up or down makes it work for some minutes, without restarting Vegas.

My Vegas folder has less than 20MB in it. I don't know if that's enough to have such an impact, but I'll try to delete as many temp files as I can.

I don't know which folder you are pointing to, but when it's the temporary files folder 20 MB is way to low. Replace that one in Options/ Preferencies/General to a place with at least a few GB ( 100 or so πŸ˜‰)

I was referring to the folder content in the program files, not the folder capacity or limit.
There's at least 800 GB free/available to it on the hard drive.

I would want to know more about your source to final output workflow, also details on your machine hardware.

It is odd to go from 3GB RAM to 6GB RAM. This configuration could actually be holding the system back. Not saying this is the issue.

There must be something in the process of what is be done edit wise, or something else.

Have you tried the various system repair tasks from the FAQs? Have you run an SFC /scannow? Does it come up clean? Have you run a full malware-bytes scan on the machine?

dxdy wrote on 4/30/2017, 3:59 PM

Is this happening with all your projects? Does it happen with a project with just a single clip and no FXs? Are you running VP10 32bit or 64 bit?

xavier wrote on 5/2/2017, 11:16 AM

@astar
I work with a wide variety of media sources and types. It happens the same with everything.
I have tried some things from the FAQ. Others, I will attempt as a last resort. Like going back to default settings for instance.
I run Malware-bytes pretty often.

@dxdy
Yes, all projects, regardless of what's in it. Even a single mp3 track. I can't quite remember which version it is, but I'm guessing 32 bit.

Hey, just an update on this situation.
Considering I had over 7 years worth of configurations on my Vegas, I was reluctant to reset to default.
So, I needed to exhaust all possible options before that.

However, all else failed, so I pulled the trigger with the reset yesterday, and so far, that appears to have fixed it.
I edited for a few hours yesterday without issue, and for a while today too.

Thanks for your help, and everyone else who made suggestions as well.
