Prodad Artificial Intelligence stabilization plugin

Hello,

I have a few question regarding to : https://www.prodad.com/Video-Stabilization-for-Professionals/Mercalli-V6-Plug-Ins-MAGIX-99742,l-us.html#buy

1) I don`t know if I understand it correctly. Is it compatible with Vegas Pro 20? There is information that is compatible in Magix, but there is no mention about Vegas Pro.

2) Is there anybody who has this plugin with this AI version? I know that any AI processing is not efficient as it would be in mathematical alghormitcs way? Is it true that after this plugin apply, real preview can be display smoothly? What about rendering? Is it longer than in previous version of this plugin ?

3) Is it better way to stabilize footage than gyro stabilization? Are output videos files stabilized better than in previous version of Prodad?

Can you share me your thoughts or there is somebody who has this plugin?

Regards

Marcin

My first video software was Pinnacle, next one was Sony Vegas 8 (I am not sure if remember it correctly). I am also a developer and wedding movie operator and editor. For example: I have created an Android app which let me control Vegas Pro rendering progress level on Android smartphone. I created it for fun, because I also love programming. I also created my own plugin for Audio To Text feature specified usage from Vegas Pro 19. I created proxy creation plugin which uses multiple GPU threads (maximum 3) to create proxy files for Vegas Pro. I also written many others plugin/softwares which enhance my video editing, also wedding editing.

Is it compatible with Vegas Pro 20? There is information that is compatible in Magix, but there is no mention about Vegas Pro.

Mercalli 6 for MAGIX's webpage specifies only MAGIX products:

A similar issue occurred with last year's Humble Bundle Vegas Pro 18 deal included Mercalli 5 plugin. As it turned out, it was not compatible with Vegas Pro. A forum thread from the time: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/notice-the-mercalli-v5-of-vegas-18-humble-bundle-is-not-for-vegas--138307/

But both Mercalli 4 and 5 had plugin versions for Vegas Pro (I trialed Merc 5 but found it to be much the same as Merc 4 plugin which I already owned) - both of these plugins specified Vegas in their product names.

To be sure, you might want to contact ProDad Support directly.

Incidentally, I use Mercalli 5 Standalone a lot. I did get Mercalli 6 (AI) SAL and it does have some good features like having the ability to save projects and much quicker stabilisation, but there is little user-control over how stabilisation is actioned as there is in Merc 5 SAL (i.e. Universal Camera, Glide Cam and Rock-Steady Cam) and have simply found Merc 6 to be unsatisfactory. I have therefore continued to use Merc 5 SAL. Oddly, those aforementioned user selections are available in the Merc 6 MAGIX plugin.

As others have already said, Mercalli V6 does have Magix (Video Pro X and Magix Movie Studio) plugins that work directly in the software.

Right now, as @Dexcon mentioned, the only version of Mercalli Suite that will work in Vegas is Mercalli V5.

Here is a comparison between Mercalli V5 Suite and Vegas stabilization within Vegas Pro 17.

Scrapyard Films video is excellent for demonstrating that different stabilisers are better at stabilising some tasks than others. This is indeed my experience. My preference (by habit over about a decade) is to use Mercalli SAL for most stabilising tasks. The rendered stabilised video event is then imported on to Vegas Pro's timeline and the length of that event can be shorted without any need to redo stabilisation. With a stabilisation plugin (including Vegas Pro's inbuilt stabiliser), any change to the length of the stabilised event will mean that the event has to be stabilised again. If you've got a long project using a stabilisation plugin, it would a good idea to make stabilisation the very last process to be done on the timeline otherwise you'll be redoing stabilisation after any minor change to any stabilised video event.

Please note that Vegas Pro 20's stabiliser is very different to the stabiliser in Vegas Pro 17 (VP20's is much, much better).

In my experience, stabilisation in daVinci Resolve is the best for Samsung phone video, and Mocha Pro is the go-to for stabilisation which requires a specific item to be stabilised (targeted in Mocha Pro by splines and then tracked) where other elements in the image (e.g. branches of a foreground tree significantly blowing in the wind) become the basis of other stabilisers like Mercalli and stabilising follows that other element and it all ends up a a total mess. I should note that the runner-up for this type of stabilisation is Vegas Pro' stabiliser using Expert mode and defining the area to be stabiilsed by defining the grid which can target the target area of the image to be stabilised.

The AI Stabilization in Topaz Video Enhance does an outstanding job, when I have a shot that the other ones can't fix including Resolve's the Topaz one in most cases can fix it up nice. It also does it full frame, so no cropping. It is slower than the other ones but it gets the job done right.

@Dexcon

The built-in VEGAS Video Stabilization can be used in two ways, the first is as Event FX and the second is as Media FX. If you use it as Media FX, you can edit the event normally without losing the analysis data and without having to redo the stabilization. I have to admit that VEGAS native stabilization is really one of the best.

The ProDad Mercalli plugin can only be used in VEGAS as Video FX and if you do some types of editing, the analysis will be lost and you will have to redo the stabilization. But I recently found that if you save Mercalli Event FX as a filter pack and then apply it as Media FX, you can edit normally without losing analysis data and without needing to re-stabilize. See my screen recording below showing the process.

3POINT wrote on 4/19/2023, 12:00 AM

The results of stabilisation are better and the time needed to analyse are shorter when using prodads mercalli as EventFX on TRIMMED events. Together with Vegasaur Batch stabilisation, stabilizing a complete edited timeline project is just a mouse click, an unbeatable quality and time saver.

@joelsonforte.br  ... thank you for reminding me about stab at the MediaFX level. Unfortunately, I don't think that this will work all that well for me because most of my video footage is handheld and the head and tail of many shots include the camera adjusting framing at the head or at the tail of the shot the camera 'swishing away' even though the camera recording stop button has been hit. Leaving these bits in Mercalli and other stabilisers result in some very strange and unwanted stab results because the stab process includes those 'out-of-control' heads and tails of the shot. The way around this would be to edit/render the event to eliminate those heads and tails, but then that's what already happens when using Mercalli SAL, Resolve or Mocha Pro.

Of course, if the entire length of the original video event is without the head/tail problem, then using stab at the MediaFX level would be the way to go.

Also, within the one shot I often do a wide shot, zoom in to a medium shot and then zoom in again to a closer shot (or often just 2 framings). Using Mercalli SAL or others, I can create 2 or 3 different separate stabilised renders using selected sections of the video event thus avoiding the wonky zooms which aren't meant to be used in the project.

That's the way I work too. First trim/cut the unusable parts out and then stabilise. Why should I stabilise a whole shot when I just use a fraction of it.

@marcinzm

You can download an unlimited trial of Mercalli 6 SAL (just with a little watermark in the output) and find out yourself that Mercalli 6 is just faster (analysing) then Mercalli 4/5, but stabilizing results are almost identical. At least this is my experience.

Personally I still prefer to use Mercalli 4 plugin with Vpro20 to stabilise as described earlier for shaky recordings. But since I film with gimbal support, no need anymore for Mercalli.

@joelsonforte.br I just tried your workaround to add Mercalli as MediaFX. I must say very very cumbersome to work that way, instead of just first trimming and adding Mercalli to the trimmed result. You save first the complete Mercalli analyze of the EventFX as Filter Package than remove that Event FX, add it again as Media Package and then start trimming. Also you have to do this for each event again, because the saved Filter Package just works for that typical event and not for other events.

joelsonforte.br wrote on 4/19/2023, 9:38 AM

@Dexcon and @3POINT

I only work with the procedure above when I need to make some changes to an event that has already been stabilized so that I don't lose the analysis data. When I need to do this in many events, instead of using this procedure, I use nesting in the stabilized events and then in the master project I use the options of the Vegasaur Split Events tool.

3POINT wrote on 4/19/2023, 10:02 AM

Just a small test comparing Mercalli 4 Plugin against Mercalli 6 SAL with ancient HDV footage (from 2006) and comparing a whole event stabilisation with trimmed event stabilisation.

My experience:

1 No difference in stabilisation result between Mercalli 4 plugin and Mercalli 6 SAL.

2 Huge difference when just stabilising the needed part and not the whole footage. (less zoom=more pixels/resolution)

3. Plugin is fastest, no need for extra HDspace, no extra render and far more convenient to use than SAL version.

Can you explain to me how to avoid Cropping after stabilizing event using Mercalli 4 Plugin PRO version (I mean after click "Analyze" button)

Is it possible to avoid any cropping or how to make cropping as little as possible?

In Mercalli 4 plugin you can avoid cropping by deactivating "no borders" which will result in a black borders or filled borders. Both don't look satisfactory.

Cropping is always a result of stabilisation, less cropping means less stabilisation.

Does AI processing goes slowler than in V4 version?

The new stabilization AI model considers the entire frame instead of an individual point. We trained the model with challenging video samples to perform better than the traditional feature-matching algorithm.

Most stabilization methods need to crop the composition to remove the missing regions created after transforming the frames, which can affect the footage's intended framing. Therefore, in addition to the Auto-Crop option, Topaz Video AI offers Full-Frame stabilization, which generates the missing region using neighboring frames and AI models.

I have not tried the Prodad AI one yet

Reading between the lines, my impression was that V5 is the same as V4. After trialing V5 for Vegas, I couldn't detect any difference between V5 and V4.
