project video loads, but then goes off-line

I am using Vegas Pro Version 14.0 (Build 270) 64-bit

Using a Window 10 64-bit operating sys, Pro Verson 1703 OS Build 15063.726 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4771 CPU @ 3.50GHz Installed Ram 16.0 GB

I have been working on a project (length about 25 minutes) made up of some 15 different short i-Phone videos and images overlaid onto another longer Google Earth video MP4. All the iPhone videos that I am now having problems with worked fine and loaded properly during 2 weeks of editing. Now when I load the project the video files load up properly (I can see them on preview monitor), but shortly after (5 seconds or so), they go blank on the preview monitor, but the iPhone images and Google Earth video are viewable on the preview monitor.

When I copy & paste ALL (Cntrl A) the files into a new copy of Vegas Pro the same black preview screen happens again, but once again the iPhone images and Google Earth video are viewable on the preview monitor.

side note: I have noticed that as I got about 2 weeks into the editing that the system was crashing more often than at first (task monitor shows a Vegas file size upward of 500 MB).

thanks for any of your ideas, vic borgogno

PS: I have done some more testing and found the following: In sequentially copying various clips of the original video (the original video that wouldn't show a video preview) into a new copy of Vegas, I found that all the video previewed properly until I got very close to having all clips copied and transferred. Once I copied the last clips into the new copy of Vegas, it once again stopped previewing. Thinking it might be inherent in a particular clip, I did the same test but copied the files from the opposite end of the original video; and once again I got near the end, the same problem happened (ie no preview monitor video clips).

It is beginning to look to me like some maximum limit has been exceeded?

This may give some insight into the problem with iPhone files. Rewrapping into another container is usually the suggested solution.

Thanks, that article has some important items, many of which I am a bit hesitant to change at this time. The reason being is that I am able to break the project in 1/2 and and everything works perfectly in both 1/2's (?). This is the first time something like this has occurred (I have been using iPhone video for the last 4 years with Vegas 13 now Vegas 14, last 2).

This is the info from one of my iPhone video clips:

Plug-In
  Name: qt7plug.dll
  Folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 14.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\qt7plug
  Format: QuickTime 7
  Version: Version 14.0 (Build 270)
Company: MAGIX Computer Products Intl. Co.

Should I install the compoundplug.dll or the so4compoundplug.dll?

Streams
  Video: 00:00:45.358, 29.983 fps progressive, 1920x1080x24, H.264
Audio: 00:00:45.418, 44,100 Hz, 32 Bit (IEEE Float), Mono, AAC

Question: Why might the problem go away when I reduce the file size by breaking it in 1/2 and editing each of the files separately? It really sounds like the problem has to do with size.

File size of task for original file: Memory 500.3 MB (NO Preview Video)!

File size of task for file 1: Memory 481 MB (Preview Video)

File size of task for file 2: Memory 518.2 MB (Preview Video)

File size of Vegas without a file: 93.3 MB

I may be wrong about the size being the issue, but why then can I cut the file in half and edit successfully?

Update on my Vega 14 not showing images of the iPhone clips:

I was able to finish the editing by breaking the file into 2 pieces and then bring the two videos back into Vega 14 and join together. This is a link to the first cut video.

After finishing the video I read up on Vegas 15 and decided to get the 'Christmas' special. After installation, I loaded the original 25 minute files into Vegas 15. It accepted all the iPhone files and the previewing work PERFECTLY! I do believe that John Dennis nailed the problem to the iPhone video decoder being a 32 bit addressing codec and on the Vegas 15 it might be 64 bit? Anyways, the new version will be my working platform from now on. However, I am having a lot of crashes with Vegas 15 and for small projects of 5 minutes and less. Haven't figured out the cause or what combination of edit commands are causing the crashes.

Another aspect that I do quite often is 'stretching out' the video clips (x4 slow motion) as I do a lot of work with movement, and need to see the video in slow motion and then capture particular frames. The problem I am having is that when I stretch the video, most all the frames turn out blurred; every 4th frame is in focus but can't be used in our annotated presentation.  I have been able to laboriously obtain 'blur free slow motion video', but I have to go thru a lot of operations, and that may be part of the reason that Vegas 15 is crashing(?).

As a result I have looked at the way Vegas stretches the video and wondered if anyone might take a look at this link and see if I have depicted the reason that 3 of the 4 video frames are out of focus? Is there a feature in Vegas that I am overlooking that does the simple field repeat function?

As I mentioned above, because the out of focus frames, I have to slice and dice the bad ones so that blurring can be reduced and then 'freeze frame' for the annotated presentation.  Just curious whether you have any other options for 'stretching' your video?  The link shows what seems like a simpler format that results in ZERO fuzzy images and would be perfect for anyone working with movement and slow motion as you could stretch at various scales, while using what looks like a very simple 'field' repeating scheme.

I'm having the same problem with multiple iPhone videos. It's very time consuming to group a few into a new mt2s and use that, but it does work, as long as the number of files is small. One too many files and the veg file is corrupted and Vega 14 crashes. I wish I had the Christmas special. Looks like that is my only solution. This is a new problem that my old veg files never had. Open those old files produces that same corruption. I'm wondering if it is a window update problem.

@michael-brown Why are mt2s files involved in your process? Did you do the conversion described in this post? It creates MP4 files very quickly, because it's just a re-wrap, not a conversion, and they usually play nicely in Vegas.

By Christmas special, if you mean a Vegas offer, the current offer matches it: http://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/upgrades-for-vegas-pro-and-vegas-movie-studio/

Nick, thank you for the useful links and articles/comments. You have researched the issue in what’s seems to be very complete fashion.

I purchased Vegas 15 to solve my problem with lots of . MOV files being combined with MP4 in 1/2 hr length files. It did seem to work where as Vegas 14 didn’t.

Kind regards, vic

Nick, thanks for the pointers. I'll work on implementing them.
