SLI

I'm sort of a newbie with VP15 and am trying to optimize my hdwre for it. Does someone know if VP15 supports SLI ? I've seen that earlier versions don't, but there's conflicting ideas about that and I haven't found Magix specs that address that. I'm on Win7 with dual Xeons, and Quadro M4000 (x2). Timeline playback gets rough at higher bitrates (>10 mBps) regardless of codec. Thanks

You really aren't at a point that you should be worried about the efficacy of SLI.

If "Timeline playback gets rough at higher bitrates (>10 mBps) regardless of codec." you should probably looking at other parts of the system than just the GPU. Even though you have given an overview of the hardware in your system there is not enough detail for us to actually help you.

1) Do you have "dual Xeons" that have two cores in each socket or dual sockets that have ten cores in each socket. It makes a difference.

2) What is the core clock speed for each of the cores?

3) What is the version of the PCIe bus?

4) What codec(s) do you encounter most of the time? My ten-year-old Q9450 with GTS450 can play uncompressed video (795 Mb/s) without dropping a frame.

My knee-jerk SWAG: Don't worry about SLI.

Ok, thanks for that advice - I'll dive into the specs and put them here.

OK, here are my machine specs: (I'm not super geeky so let me know if more or different info is needed)

MB is an ASRock X99 Taichi LGA 2011, w/ Intel X99 SATA 6GB/s

PROCESSOR, actually I have just a single Xeon E5-1650 (6 cores, 12 threads), 3.6 ghz

(How do I determine the core clock speed for each core?)

RAM - 32 GB (4x8) DDR4, SDRAM 2400, ECC server class

PCIe version - not sure about this, the Windows driver is Intel v. 10.1.2.10 (I don't know to get more info)

GPU - 2X nVidia Quadro M4000, 8GB (I'm not sure how these should be configured)

DISCS - boot, OS and progs are on a RAID10 using 4 skHynix 250GB SSD's, on-board controller

- media is on a Seagate 1TB hybrid, SATA3 I also render to this drive

I've noticed that the timeline playback is worst when the thumbnails are being refreshed, as when the timeline scrolls to a new screen during playback. Lowering preview res helps somewhat but it still hiccups badly during transitions and fx. I'd like to preview on a 2nd monitor but I can barely edit as it is with just the one.

Until lately I've been working with simpler formats like nxcam - avchd (1440). Then I bought a Sony XDCAM that does .mxf XAVC long HD at up to 50mbps. So to be able to edit that footage I got this rig but it hasn't worked out, even at 17 mbps. My camera is a Sony PXW-X70.

Thanks

Your Xeon processor is neck and neck with my i7 6850. I don't have any serious complaints with my system given the source media that I most commonly use.

Skip 3) above and move to 4). Memorize this, but post your media characteristics starting with Letter C.

There is a wealth of information in this FAQ, but for this question, focus on 18.

I'm not optimistic that the M4000 is the best video card for use with Vegas Pro, but what's on the timeline affects your preview performance as well as your hardware.

Eventually, you'll read until you get to this statement:

"My camera is a Sony PXW-X70."

Read this FAQ. It might help, depending on the variant of video from your camera.

Thanks for the above...gives me lots to work with. I'm travelling for 2 weeks so it'll be a bit before I follow up here.
