Sony Press Release for Vegas 5

Well said John. Heck, with all the marketing experience I've had in my career, I'd be more than happy to take on a contract to help out Sony in the marketing department. As I said in my other response, Vegas is so close to exceeding FCP4's capabilities yet so far away.

The announcement is just a few hours old...

It's nice to hear about the 3d support.

I think (and hope) this means discreet center channel panning that is not possible in current panner.

Yeah, that must be it. I hope you're right. Thanks for the link.

Ever hear the concept of "first impressions".

I agree with John. I don't see that much to get excited about yet. Maybe there is more than I perceive yet, but if so, the marketing should be better.

I'm not the kind of person who buys every release of products because, in my experience a lot of releases aren't worth the expenditure. "Show me the beaf", and I may buy it.

If that isn't there yet, they really must not be paying attention.
Seems like it should have been mentioned, though.

Well... at least we know Sony's not going to kill the product like some were predicting. I'm betting there are going to be many new nice features well worth the upgrade making a great product even better.

Interesting that it will acquire fro J-H3 HDCAM but no mention of HD output.

This ties in with previous statements that Vegas would become offline system of choice to XPRI, much the same relationship as there is between Express DV and Avid's hi end systems
musman wrote on 3/3/2004, 3:46 AM
The things I really want are matchback for film originated projects and EDLs to take to a rental house to do online with either Avid (even though I hate them with a passion) or a suped up mac. I know of nowhere near here that has Xpri and the fact that Sony is trying to make updates to it make me worry that they'll use it the same way Avid does and cripple their lower end stuff (ie Vegas). This way we wouldn't have to spend thousands of dollars on new hardware to make some really high end projects. Without these things I think Vegas will make a SERIOUS omission.
Dual processor support and 64 bit excite me more than render farms. But I'll still be interested in seeing what farming will do.
The HDCAM talk actually scares me too as I hope Sony doesn't start gearing Vegas only to their hardware and leave people out in the cold who want to use Panasonic's HD cameras.
It's very early and we'll see what's to come, so I'm not panicing yet. I have faith in the old Sonic Foundry people if the Sony will let them do what they do better than anyone else out there.

I’m sure end-actions are there but my point was that this was something that was blatantly missing from DVD Architect 1.0 (even my $49 Ulead MovieFactory has them) and IMHO should have been addressed with a patch just like 24P was added to Vegas later in a patch for free. Now they’ve added subtitle and alternate audio track support, etc. to the new version (two things I don’t need, sorry I don’t make international DVD’s of my projects) but NOW they have to charge more for that and so I’m paying for something I don’t need just to get the fix (end-actions) that I do need, which should have been there in the first place!

I hope Sony takes this into account in their upgrade pricing for DVD-A. I would just like to stop having to use workarounds to join all my MPEG’s together just to get DVD-A to work like a normal DVD.

Hey--maybe the Sony marketing department is confused because Sony still hasn't decided how to evolve this product? I do agree that the release announcement should be followed by a detailed explanation of new features. It makes no sense to wet the appetite then withhold the food---just causes misunderstandings. Lets hope that in the next couple of days we get more info. Maybe one of our friendly Beta testers (Spot, Gary, Ed etc) will be given permission to "spill the beans."

And maybe spill some screen caps. ;->

Could somebody give me a direct link to this press release? The above link takes me to "file not found"

Thanks,

yep danieljoelle, I just tried and they removed it. But I saw it yesterday before going to bed and I can say that if you read the very first post, you practically got all the info that was on the link. About the picture of the box, it's almost the same as V4. A little different but same color, etc... not much to see there.
Let's wait for more info; if they removed the link , it's probably 'cause they're adding more info on this... hopefully!

Maybe it was "accidental" like what happens on the MAC site every once in a while. They post something and say it was "unintentional" just to get some excitement going.

I wish they would have sent that release out in an email to the users, or posted a link themselves here. That would make me feel a little more cared for :(

By far the greatest piece of info yet is just the fact that both programs will be relasesed at NAB!

>>>It makes one wodner as well if Sony will follow SoFo's lead like last year and release a beta copy<<<

I think they already have. On another thread, not here in the video section, somene made a post to the effect of "Tell me exactly the step you are using because I have a version higher than 4 that I am using and would like to try and repro the bug...."

That was the first indication that something was up and now this thread - which I see now the Sony link provided returns a 404 error.

Render farm support is great- if you've got spare computers lying around (and a network). Vegas' primary shortfall has been lack of hardware acceleration support...and apparently still is. Why are they so vehemently opposed to this?
FuTz wrote on 3/3/2004, 7:47 AM
... well , if they read just a few posts here and there on this forum once a month they probably got the picture ...
At least, let's hOpE they got it !!!!

We were informed this morning by Sony that the press release was accidental, and that we gotta still keep things under wraps for the time being.
