Sony Vegas Pro 14 keeps crashing upon viewing certain clips

Hello,

I've been using Sony Vegas Pro 14 for a few months now, yet since recently I've been continuously stumbling upon an issue where the entire software crashes when viewing a certain clip. Since it happens under different circumstances and I otherwise have no idea what's happening, it's difficult for me to describe the problem in detail. Instead, I'd like to refer to the video below. Here I play the preview of a video I edited - the first segment is normal, the second part is reversed, the third part is played normally again. Upon entering the third part, the screen turns black whereas the video is supposed to be shown normally, and upon pausing the program crashes.

Please don't mind the content of the edited video - It was simply a little gag I was editing for a friend of mine. This was the best example I could find since the crashing happens constantly without any fail upon playing the third segment of the video, even after restarting both the software and my entire PC and creating new project files. Plus, when trying to render it will get stuck at this part and after a bit the "Approximate time left" timer will indicate 0 seconds, yet it's still rendering. See this image. This also has happened with a lot of other clips in the past few weeks.

The only similarity is that they're .MP4 files, yet only some make SG14 crash and sometimes only after being edited, sometimes upon just viewing the "raw" video.

PC specs:

  • PC: Lenevo ideapad 310
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-7200 @2.50GHz 2.70GHz
  • Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 620
  • OS: Windows 10

This license/version of Sony Vegas Pro 14 was legitimately purchased through Humblebundle when it was on sale for 20 bucks. Ironically enough, a cracked version of Sony Vegas Pro 13 seems to work fine so I doubt it's an issue with my PC, especially considering these problems only started appearing a relatively short time ago.

Please let me know if any additional information is needed.

Thanks in advance, Niels.

Wow, for $20! I didn’t know that. OK, where does it say SONY? Since MAGIX bought all the software, you’d need to be contacting them. You’ve already said that your “cracked” version of SVP13 works. Do contact MAGIX, I’m sure that they would be interested.

How did you put the DJ's arm infront of the animated head?

Was it via a fast partially automated plugin or time consuming manual rotoscoping and masking?

That actually makes sense... Apologies, I'm so used to associating "Sony" with "Vegas Pro" that it didn't really occur to me that MAGIX bought the software. I'll contact them, thanks!

More info needed, especially build number and source of your footage: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

As written above, I don't think this is the right place to look for a solution for this issue I'm having. Though I'll still put all of the information you described in your thread here, just in case someone happens to know the solution.

  • Vegas version & build:
    • Version: 14.0
    • Build: 270
  • Windows version & edition:
    • Windows 10 home
    • Version: 1709
  • Source of video footage:
    • Mainly YoutubeMP4 (https://youtubemp4.to/) & Mirillis' Action! recording software (legitimately bought), though it tends to happen to any kind of video footage, no matter the source.
  • Delivery Destination
    • Mainly Youtube
  • Exact symptons of issue
    • See post.

It was some 15 minutes of manual rotoscoping and masking where necessary, with an inwards feather with a value of 1 to smoothen the edges.

Action! has been known to cause issues with Vegas before. See this post: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-why-won-t-vegas-open-my-file-correctly-codecs-converters-etc--104572/

You could try changing your recording settings in Action! or use OBS Studio to record your screen. There are also suggestions in that post for ways to convert existing footage.

A MediaInfo report for particular problem clips might show us something problematic.

Videos downloaded from YouTube generally work well in Vegas.
