Static when playing in Vegas 22

Christopher-Strauch wrote on 8/26/2025, 3:48 PM

I have a .mov file of a band which plays fine in VLC. Loads into Vegas Pro 22 but playback is loud static. I am using Focusrite 2I2 3rd Gen interface which is set for 44100 along with the Project in Vegas. Clip properties have it listed as 44100 and quicktime. Quicktime plugin is enabled in preferences. When opened in Soundforge 18 audio plays fine. What am I missing?

If you have Sound Forge Audio Studio installed on your computer, please see the comment marked as the solution in the following MAGIX forum post:

https://www.magix.info/us/forum/audio-issue--1290482/#ca1738999

... which provides the solution to one possible cause of screeching/static with .mp3 audio (the MediaInfo report shows that the codec ID is .mp3).

BTW, I don't have Audio Studio but once experienced the same problem apparently caused by Sound Forge Pro.

Otherwise, try doing a forum search using the keyword "mp3 static" as there are quite a number of posts re issues with mp3 audio.

The Shade Tree Vegas Editor responds:

If you upload a sample file to a cloud share and post a link here on the Vegas forum ...

... it may help the developers add yet another whack-a-do file type to the long list of things that people do never expecting anyone to take them seriously.

Interesting that the

I don't have Audio Studio but once experienced the same problem apparently caused by Sound Forge Pro.

The global noise issue caused by Sound Forge Audio Studio was the 'Magix Low Latency 2016 driver' ... which is not installed with SF Pro, so it likely was something else.
As @john_dennis stated, upload a sample file to a cloud drive so we may investigate first-hand.

btw, welcome to the Vegas users community @Christopher-Strauch

From this link: Olympus LS-20M: High-Def Video and PCM Audio Recorder

Some of these devices can record audio in lossy or lossless formats:

"When it comes to audio, the device captures rich, dynamic sound with its two condenser mics, and the ability to record in Linear PCM (WAV files) and MP3 formats."

Christopher-Strauch wrote on 8/27/2025, 12:07 PM

Thanks for the welcome. I will try to get a sample up after work. John. I checked the Olympus last night cause I know that I would never select MP3 as an audio format. According to the Olympus it is set at PCM. 44100 hz. 16bit. Media info is reporting MP3 Another head scratcher

Christopher-Strauch wrote on 8/27/2025, 3:49 PM

Hey guys_gals, Here is a little sample I shot and stored on Google Drive. Hopefully I did this right.
I checked deeper into the Olympus and the audio alone records in PCM. If shooting video it only records as MP3 it seems. As rraud wrote there was no Magix Low Latency driver in the registry so that wasn;t the answer. Go figure how it plays in SoundForge but not in Vegas.. I used to have a computer with Vegas 10 and that version could handle these type of video files. Yeah I know my stuff is old. Unfortunately that computer is long gone.

@Christopher-Strauch

You need to update the "Share" options on the file so that others can access it to download.

Right + click on the file...

john_dennis wrote on 8/27/2025, 4:40 PM

Vegas Pro 22-250 doesn't have an issue with your mp3 audio. It's just the way it's wrapped into the file. The first workaround I thought of was to extract the audio using Shutter Encoder, add it to the timeline as a new track, delete the old track and group the video and audio. There is probably a less tedious way. Thinking.

john_dennis wrote on 8/27/2025, 4:44 PM

I'm equally sorry at how old I am at this. I'm working on live recordings from 1969.

john_dennis wrote on 8/27/2025, 5:06 PM

The most direct way to deal with this (until the Vegas developers act) is to use Shutter Encoder to convert to Apple Pro Res (Proxy, LT, 422, etc.).

Christopher-Strauch wrote on 8/27/2025, 5:48 PM

john_dennis
you are a genius. I'm not all sure what happens when you convert a file to Apple Pro Res (Proxy,...) but magic happens. Thank you so much for the work around.

john_dennis wrote on 8/27/2025, 5:52 PM

Glad you got some satisfaction.

While we're on the subject of file support. ALAC Audio

@Christopher-Strauch said: "I'm not all sure what happens when you convert a file to Apple Pro Res (Proxy,...) but magic happens."

ProRes is a very common video format that is used widely by editors. It happens to use lossless LPCM audio. While mp3 is common for audio-only delivery work it is less common in video files. My effort today was to find a way to convert your files to something more likely to be decoded properly by Vegas Pro. VideoReDo TV Suite 6 will rewrap the video and convert the mp3 audio to LPCM in an m2ts wrapper and Vegas decodes it fine. I'm sure there are many other ways to skin that cat, but mp3 is the likely stinker here.

Anecdotal Folderol

I was eating lunch in a restaurant in 1995. While reading the Wall Street Journal, I read that Fraunhoffer had announced mp3. The Wall Street Journal being the in-depth kind of newspaper that they were/are, went into much detail on how "masking" would allow the encoder to throw away some parts of the audio that would never be heard by the end user because of other louder parts and then compress the remainder to meet the demands of the bandwidth of the delivery channel. I decided on that day that I would never use mp3 for anything for the rest of my life. I lied. I use it to stream podcasts from my iPad to my headphones when I mow my grass. That's what I think it's good for.

I took the update to Shutter Encoder 19.4. With 19.4, the most direct way to skin this cat is to rewrap the file while converting the audio to PCM using these settings. The video is unchanged.
