Time for our next contest, and our website has been re-designed to only start taking votes on a specific date, and end on a specific date.
Contest rules are simple: you cannot use video of any kind.
For more information, visit the page.
So... set your bit-rate for your WMV "render" at no more than 200kbps.

Well, it wasn't a question of how to make a small WMV file, that's no problem -- I was just wondering how to get a DECENT looking video stream at such a low data rate...
When I make "still motion" commercials, I have to render at 1Meg to keep from getting a really noisy video stream and at 320x240 that results in a file around 3.5 megs...
Jim,
The point (which could likely be better said on our part) would be that the vid doesn't HAVE to be 30 seconds. Make it shorter if you wish, at a higher bitrate, but at 200kpbs, it should likely look pretty decent.
I see that you can use generated media. Are you allowed to keyframe generated media so that it creates motion? I'm assuming you can but just making sure.
on the contest entry page it states that you can visit the contest page at anytime to view the standings but I don't see the link to the actual contest but I did send in an entry ..
"Wild Strawberries"
From http://www.vasst.com/?v=stillmotion_contest.htm ...
"You can use stills, you can use graphics from your graphic editor. You can use generated media from the application, but at no point may you use sequential stills that would constitute a video clip."
So i think the answer would probably be no if they are squential stills from some sort of movement, but yes if they are unrelated stills.
Good call, Kelly. That's the rule exactly. The rule is mentioned that way so someone doesn't just take a piece of video that's cool, turn it into images, and then reassemble the same vid using those images.
We've had two entries already, some guys just work really fast!
Hope to see more. I kinda suspect we'll see some "Kid in the Picture" sorts of stuff, hoping to, anyway. Might be just the right time to win a Cybershot in time for Christmas, eh? :-)
"Kid stays..." :
A good tutorial (to make with AE but gives good pointers), written in 2003 but still relevant is on DV.Com site and you'd probably have to register (not very long to do). Then search for "Moving Pictures: Creating Multiplane Animation from Photographs" by Jun Diaz.
Like the previous contest, I'm happy to provide voice-over services for your contest entry, FREE!
Samples of my work over still images can be viewed at: www.Narrate.biz .
Send me your script, along with whatever direction, and I'll send back an .mp3/.wav.

This offer subject to restrictions. If I don't feel right for some reason (like it's just too distaseful, or something) about your project I reserve the right not to do it. (I don't expect this to happen.)
Use of the free voice-over limited to entries in the VASST still motion contest.
Very cool offer, Travis.
And for those that have submitted, my apologies. We implemented a new voting system that is in line with what folks here asked for (voting after the contest is over), and somehow I screwed up the way the files were being linked.
That's all fixed now; there are a couple of entries in there already, both have some very nice bits in them.
Hope y'all can have fun with it! FWIW, you can submit them on your own.
If Travis is making such a generous offer again, might be a good way to "power up" those stills. Can't wait to see some of the entries!
Two more questions (more seriously this time):
-any limit for number of entries ?
-Would a timelapse made out of stills from a digital camera at a rate of 1 pic every 30 seconds be allowed ? Got a few of those and was minding if I could use 'em... Did it with a Canon G2 still camera. This would be used more as a backdrop than the subject itself. Could easily provide the VEGgie if requested. God, it took me a while to make each one of those... : /
Limited to 2 entries, and yes, your still cam images, so long as they are STILLS and not a quicktime or mjpeg file, would meet the requirements. There are already a few good un's up there!
I can take individual images from my HDV footage, save as an image file, and use them, pan and scan, as long as the scene is totally different. Correct? I would like to use some images, but my only source is on my FX1 capture.
Since the timelapse thing is ok, I would think that the source of the digital image is immaterial.
After gong on Spots site and reading somewhat carefully ,seems to me i dont have to use Vegas. Can use AE or whatever..,, am I correct on that ? Cause wow what a difference (in my pea brain) in what can be achieved.

The rules state: "You can use stills, you can use graphics from your graphic editor. You can use generated media from the application, but at no point may you use sequential stills that would constitute a video clip."
