Switching between multi-track camera shots besides multi-camera tool?

Good day, everyone.

I have a project that consists of a ton of footage made up of video audio tracks from remotely recorded podcast between two people. The project currently has about 32 layers of audio and video footage, which is actually 2 sets of 16 tracks for each person. These include video footage, overlay logos, labels, links, glowing effects for when the person is speaking.

So each person has about 16 tracks of video and audio footage that I need to constantly switch between. My current approach is to group the clips for 1 person and mute / unmute the clips to reveal and hide the other person's footage and overlay items. This works but I wonder if there's a way to perhaps link the footage to a single track and toggle that track via envelopes perhaps. I sort of tried this with compositions but render times became attrocious. Went from about 25 minutes to 4 hours to render a clip of about 15 minutes.

Currently I'm considering of having 2 projects for each person, then import those projects into a 3rd and edit it there with multi-camera. Are there any other options I may not be aware of?

You could try inserting video composite level envelopes on your tracks to fade or pop them in and out of view. Or use pip FX full screen while animating the opacity. Multicam edit mode does it with splitting and muting.
