The best choice of graphics card for AMD Ryzen 9 processor

Piotr-D wrote on 10/9/2024, 1:55 PM

Specification my computer:

- Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5950X

- Motherboard B550-A Pro, PCI Express 4.0

- Memory Ram DDR4 32GB

- Hard Disk Lexar SSD NM790 2TB

Qestions A:

Is a graphics card from the same company AMD

( example AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT 16GB )

or NVIDIA,

( example Geforce Rtx 4080 16 GB )

better for an AMD processor? I want smooth AVC/HEVC 4K 50P 150MB/s 4:2:0 preview

Questions B:

Above what GB value, adding memory in the graphics card does not affect the speed of the program when editing?

Questions C:

Above what Frequency value does replacing the graphics card with a better one affect the speed of the program when editing?

I noticed that AMD graphics cards have higher frequencies than Nvidia by about 30% - is it therefore better to edit on an AMD card? The speed of rendering the final material does not matter because I run it at night anyway.

Thank You

I have both a 6900xt and a 4090 in my 11900k system and get a little smoother editing with the Nvidia. But faster render performance from the Amd. I had an Arc a770 in before the Nvidia and it gave me the absolute creamiest playback but the lowest render performance. Not sure the frequencies directly compare across brands because they operate so differently internally. Another thing to think about is power... I've found Intel draws the least while Nvidia draws the most. Amd is outstanding considering it's performance is so high. Btw, my 4k monitor does not have proprietary sync for Amd or Nvidia and that might be affecting my experience.

@Piotr-D Hi, AMD vs Nvidia GPU's are off course debatable but from what I've read on here & from my experience Nvidia is the more 'stable' choice, because ... AMD drivers can be 'dodgy', it's hard to put into words but on here there's been numerous posts about AMD driver issues & people having to roll back to a previous version but very rarely if ever are there problems with the Nvidia GPU drivers, there have however been a few mentions of the 4000 series GPU's not working quite right, I have a 3090 so I notice if they get mentioned in posts but from my recollection I can't think of one...

You say render speed isn't a consideration, @RogerS has a benchmark & test sheet that shows other peoples PC speeds & specs reg their PC setup. PC's/processors with integrated graphics do better than those without & as your 5950x processor does not have integrated graphics you're in a similar boat to me, I don't have a prob with editing performance. (specs in Signature bottom of this comment).

Like I say it's debatable & I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions shared 👍

Thank you. The main theme of my technical question is: if I have an AMD processor, an AMD graphics card is also recommended. Intuition tells us that two components from the same company work better. But I see a preponderance of votes for NVIDIA stability. Do you also suggest that the lower version of the 3000 series is more stable than the NVIDIA 4000 series?

@Piotr-D That's not easy to answer as I haven't seen a lot of people post on here with 4000 series GPU's, there are some but not a lot & the one or two I remember posting had some issues although I can't remember what their problems were..

As I remember from reading the posts over the last few yrs-

  • AMD - some issues with graphics often resolved with a driver change.
  • Nvidia 2000 & 3000 cards - very rarely are there posts about issues.
  • Nvidia 4000 - one or two posts but like I say I can't remember what they were.

PS. a 3000 card will be cheaper than a 4000 & like I say rarely are there problems reported, AMD can be faster as @Howard-Vigorita mentioned but often they're with an Intel CPU that inc integrated graphics, your's doesn't have integrated graphics so you'd need to check @RogerS's benchmark tests for more info on that.

Historically, AMD trails Nvidia in encoding quality, especially in FHD. Perhaps that's changed.

PC 1:

Intel i9-9900K

32 GB Ram

AMD Radeon XFX RX 7900 XT

Intel UHD 630

Win 10

PC 2:

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16 core CPU

64 GB Ram

Nvidia 4090 GPU

Intel A770 GPU

Win 11

Laptop:

Intel 11th. Gen 8 core CPU. i9-11900K

64 GB Ram

Nvidia RTX 3080 GPU

Has anyone noticed a significant improvement in the smoothness of the preview when editing when changing Vegas 21 to Vegas 22 on an Nvidia 3000 series card, which declares Magix? Especially with HEVC?

Piotr-D wrote on 10/9/2024, 4:10 PM

Thank you for the good tip. Translating from armenian does not always allow me to conduct good linguistic research magnifying end glass search.

Gid wrote on 10/9/2024, 4:12 PM

@Piotr-D HEVC was dramatically improved with VP21, that improvement has carried on with VP22, I don't notice any difference now between AVC vs HEVC, & both my cameras now record UHD HEVC without issues. but improvements with Vegas is at the moment an ongoing process so overall it can only get better.

PS. I think comparing AMD vs Nvidia isn't an easy one, all PC's are slightly different, some people have had the same GPU for a few yrs now & those that have replaced their GPU because it was old have replaced it like for like but a newer version, some prefer AMD & some prefer Nvidia 🤷‍♂️👍

I recently got a RTX 4060 mobile and it's working well with VEGAS 21 and 22. Performance seems a bit behind my 2080 Super desktop. There really aren't bad GPU choices, get one you can afford.

Reyfox wrote on 10/10/2024, 5:45 AM

An all AMD user here with the 5950X CPU. Have there been driver issues with AMD? Yes. The same can be said about Nvidia. Right now, I am using AMD's latest, 24.9.1 and before that, 24.8.1. Most of my issues have come with Vegas Effects, which isn't supported anymore by VEGAS. Videos have a different tint in VE. But right now, zero issues with the GPU drivers.

What's best? I can't answer that. I think @Howard-Vigorita provided a stellar response with his personal, real world experience with both Nvidia and AMD high end cards.
